You know, the bricks by themselves weren't as impressive as the actual locomotive sets.

But honestly, I really liked this idea. You get set locomotive pieces (for a large or small engine, with or without a tender) and you can pick which colour you like. I thought that was a really brilliant idea.

When I was little, I always loved browsing the My Own Train line in the catalog. Such a really cool theme by Lego, and I really wish I’d been able to afford more than just the small blue engine at the time. I long for a return to those glory days of Lego trains, back when we had so much more than just our cookie-cutter passenger and cargo trains under the City brand.

I was not alive then, but that seems like a pretty cool idea. It would be awesome if they brought it back.

Green is not a creative color...

Some of those look suspiciously not green.

I have the gray one. Somewhere.

I really like these my own train sets. I’ve got a blue short cab and a black long cab with tender chugging around my train layout right now. The sticker sheets are getting really hard to find now, unfortunately.

I remember these loose in a bin at the LEGO store. I bought a bunch of different colors, but I only have the one train set. Which color do I choose to build? (It was blue. Most of the others are still in the bags.)

Cool idea by customising train colours. This might be an interesting feature to use in the near future.

Cool. I actually have the brown one (3746), still sealed as I never had the base set. I just bought it on Bricklink once together with an order of some totally different pieces that were on one of my wanted lists.

This was a great idea, 4 different styles of train and 5 different colours all by mixing just a few bags. It's a pity it was never repeated. Maybe grey & brown were not the best colours.

You could custom order these on LEGO.com IIRC and I have a black large engine with tender as well as one in Brown and I think in grey. The myOwnTrain sets were nice too (but pricey) and I think Target had the one with a Blue passenger car..
