What every town-building kid dreamed of: a town layout. Great for expansion and proof that not every set was police

Back in the day when we had road plates included in official sets.

Today it's a bit different but still special. Lego city/town will always be part of my life.

Thank you Lego!

This set was so cool. Unique trees you don’t see very often, road signs, road base plates, and it was the last set to utilize the big gray train track pieces, in the base for the crane. I also love the popcorn vendor, and the minifigure selection was superb.

The crown jewel of my collection as a kid. It made every other town set relevant to me and still inspires my city building efforts today.

My overall favorite set. I remember building it with my mom and dad and I have the reissue as a standalone display.

This set was the centerpiece of my love for Lego as a child, and I found so much storytelling with it. Man, good times. <3

Now THIS is what a town square set should look like. Not the hot mess that was shown recently as an upcoming City set.

In my opinion, it is a set that best exemplifies LEGO: A town set where it is being built as you play with it. I got this as soon as it was out as a Legends set, then I got an original out of a LEGO lot I purchased.

I saw this in the Lego catalogs as a kid and always wanted it. It was my holy grail set, but I never got it. When it was re-released, I was in my second dark age and never knew. ...but I picked up the re-release on eBay a couple years ago.

One of the best sets of all time! Suck it, Old Fishing Shack and/or Ninjago City! :)

Good thing the new City Square is like this. Mature builds that appeal to all ages and no heavy focus on vehicles.

I really don’t understand the hate behind that. Mind filling me in?

@huw: Will there be a new article about Ideas projects that deserve some support?

Huwbot is really shilling for Ideas support, isn't he? Picking one of the all-time most favoritist sets ever released is a surefire way to build goodwill...

I drooled over this set in the catalogs as a kid but never got it. I thought the Legends re-release would be enough but it wasn't the same, so i shelled out for a used copy a couple of years ago. Still a fantastic Classic Town set that is the rightful centerpiece of any Town display.

As mentioned previously, this set in one of LEGO's finest when it comes to the town scene. It is my most favorite set and was always the centerpiece for my old town set up. For celebrating its 40th birthday, it still looks good to me. My set is carefully kept in its original box with all of the original inserts. I have built and rebuilt this set so many times that I can do so now without reading any of the instructions, that I believe showcases it enduring quality and its imprint on me.

I think LEGO should have a Legends series again, choosing older, possibly larger (say 25 years or older) sets that were quite popular when new, and still are today to re-release. A lot better than some of the minefields they've opened up with some new licenses. And we all know what I'm talking about.
