Nevermind the pistol, how is The Penguin even breathing underwater? XD

By in Australia,

Fun fact: This is the only set in the original Batman line NOT to include Batman himself, unless you count 7784.

Neat set though, but it seems as if the Penguin has taken Gillyweed or something like that!

Wow! The first Batman set to be named RSoTD!

Since when did this set exist?

This would be $30 if it was made today.

By in Australia,

Yeah, I was going to say, is this our first ever Batman random set?

I'm sure I have this version of Penguin, and this version of Robin (because this is the Tim Drake version of the suit, and I grew up with Tim as my Robin, so I consider it the most iconic, after Dick Grayson and the pixie boots, obviously. I guess it's like which James Bond you grew up with. Brosnan, for the record), but I don't think I ever bought this set.

This looks like it would be a $50 today. I think the penguin's sub still holds up to this day. Great set all around, plenty of play value.

Whenever I play trivia with my friends, I also bring that up! That's one of my favorite lego batman facts!

Penguins can stay underwater for more than 30 minutes, so no need to breathe!

The Penguin is rather poorly cropped into that photo.

By in Canada,

Is it just me, or does Robin’s sub look a whole lot like a slightly smaller, red & yellow version of 60224 Satellite Service Mission?

By in Canada,

And why does the box art make it look like the Penguin is fighting those brick-built penguins while Robin just observes in the background? Shouldn’t they all be attacking Robin?

By in Netherlands,

Great set! I am glad to have the entire Batman line.

Oh hey, a DC set with no Batman in it. That’s not something you get too many of. And it’s from the original line too where it was just Batman, even rarer!

By in Netherlands,

Why is penguin shooting at the penguins?

By in United States,

Do you say penguin like Pang-win or Peeng-win?

So Penguin has his weapon umbrella, harpoon-wielding pen-goons, two underwater missiles and a giant bomb launcher/cannon...

Meanwhile, Robin just has an unarmed sub in giant, spanking red... like a bullseye.

This was my first super hero set. My brother got me the Batman vs me freeze trike set. I absolutely loved the first Batman sets.

It’s intentional. Batman knows what he’s doing. He sneaks around in black and gets Robin to draw the fire of enemies so he can be more effective. That’s why before they settled on “the Boy Wonder,” Batman used to call him “Robin: the Human Decoy.”

Finally I set I own! This run of Batman got me out of my dark ages in 2006, randomly went into a department store in Munich on holiday where the batcave was on sale for €33!! Needless to say that, this set and as many of the original Batman line was snapped up as they were all on discount (including 7784!). I did like this one as it was a rare set without Batman (I have a LOT of him now!) so was deffo worth the buy.

@TheWackyWookiee:
Indeed, the Batman theme was _very_ Batman-centric. Of 13 retail releases, 11 included a Batman minifig (one included Bruce Wayne in addition to Batman). Two premiere items (one announcing the theme, and one SDCC exclusive) were basically just fancy packaging for one Batman minifig and one Joker minifig. Gordon, Batgirl, and Batwoman never made an appearance until DC Superheroes launched a few years later. The only three Bat-family characters that ever made an appearance in the Batman theme were Alfred, Nightwing, and two slightly different Robin minifigs (before and after he got a haircut).

@Zordboy:
It's kind of a blend of the first Tim Drake costume from the comics, and the Dick Grayson costume from B:TAS. The design is definitely Tim's, all the way, down to that iconic "R". The coloration, however, matches Dick from B:TAS with the regular green arms and legs. Dark-green would have been more accurate for Tim. Conversely, Dick's B:TAS costume had a chunkier "R" symbol. Both had short sleeves (which wasn't really something they were set up to handle back then) and a black-over-yellow cape. As for the Bond question, I didn't really grow up with any Bond. I remember catching one or two of the movies on TV, but the first one I recall watching in the theater was Goldeneye as an adult. For a time, Brosnan was my favorite, but it's hard to forgive Die Another Day. I own six Bond films, and four of them are Craig's.

@Spartan_Ghost:
Eh, 2008 Harley is still my favorite just because it's modeled after her debut appearance on B:TAS (which I watched live during its original broadcast). The four Batman designs still hold up, though I prefer the Type 2.5* and Type 3 cowls better. The Robin and Nightwing bodies and heads are okay, but the hairstyles were garbage. Pretty much every Bruce Wayne minifig is fairly generic to begin with. That's the _only_ time they released a true minifig of Killer Croc, and Bane has his original costume. Alfred is the only version they've released that's not based on a movie or TV show. Joker and Two-Face are also based on their B:TAS appearances, but _every_ minifig of Two-Face should have 180 degree face printing, and that version of Joker definitely needed a haircut. Catwoman was really good, but not significantly different from her 2012 DCS version. Scarecrow is a character that they've just struggled with for a very long time. Ivy and Freeze were definitely their respective low points. Interestingly, at this point, I think the only Batman-theme minifig that has yet to make any form of reappearance is the Mr. Freeze Henchman from the 7783 Batcave.

@zeah209:
Neither. Peng-gwin. Sounds like "pen", but straight into the "ng" sound at the end, followed by a hard "g".

@CarolinaOnMyMind:
TDKR actually introduced the idea that the oval Batman logo with the bright yellow background was meant to serve as a target, because it was easier to armor your chest under a costume than your bare face. Anyways, I'm a bit more familiar with "Robin, the Boy Target", as I didn't really start getting into Batman until the 1989 movie made him cool, so Tim Drake was just taking over that identity around that time, and one of the things they did to explain the costume change was to point out how much the bright colors of the Dick's original costume draws the eyes, while Tim got a costume that had body armor, full pants instead of short-shorts and pixie boots, a more muted color scheme, and a cape that was black on the outside so it really only drew your attention when he was facing you (and it was brighter than the actual outfit, so it should help draw fire away from his body rather than making it impossible to hide anywhere but a clown factory).
