And they drove off into the jungle, never to be seen again.

One of my favourite Exo-Force sets, I loved how Exo-force sets had a seemingly small amount of parts but the end model was always really big and "play-able" plus they feature some interesting building techniques that would not fly today.

I thought I had this one, but it was the orange one.

By in Italy,

I had this and put the large wheel as a spare on my 9398 4x4 Crawler

I received some partial Exo-force sets with boxes in a lot this year, the boxes had a separate panel that lifted to reveal a comic-style narrative for the included set. I wouldn't say the theme is underrated, but I definitely dismissed it way too fast when they were on shelves.

That thing has a LOT of guns for a rescue vehicle.

I have a hard time reconciling those minifigs with those drawings of the same characters. The color schemes match, but they look like they’re from two completely unrelated shows.

@mixedin:
Ever see Aliens? Technically, that was a rescue mission. They ran out of guns by the end, and had to get...creative.

By in Turkey,

Not a fan of the facial impressions in this set but to me Exo-Force was one of the more memorable themes since the classic age.

"Ryo, how many guns do you want on this tank?"
"Yes."

Then again, the abandoned Technic Osprey had no guns at all for a supposedly "disguised as a rescue vehicle" military object. TLG has a very shall we say flexible policy when it comes to portraying weapons and violence.
;-)

(And no, I am not trying to start the same old discussion again, I was simply being sarcastic - for those who needed it to be spelled out.)

I'd have to dig it out of whatever bin I've stored this one in, but I recall not liking how the flyer was docked on the tank. I think I thought it sat too high up, and was too loose. So, I'm pretty sure I rebuilt the docking area to be more squat, and to include studs to hold the flyer in place. I think I only bought this thing because I wanted the Keiken minifigure, at the time.

A hybrid of what and what?

Is the hybrid referring to a tank and a plane? It would be good to see a real life photo. For a series that only ran for 3 years they had lots of interesting ideas and creative builds at a reasonable price. A wheeled vehicle is unusual for this series as most were exo-skeleton large figures or aerial vehicles, but can see how this inspired lots of tracked vehicles in subsequent themes.

Yes, the top turret can detach to make an aerial fighter.

Despite its reputation for piloted mechs/aerial vehicles, all three years of Exo-Force featured at least one wheeled/tracked vehicle, on both sides. 2006 had 7705 Gate Assault and 7706 Mobile Defense Tank, 2007 had 8108 Mobile Devastator, and 2008 had this.

That's interesting to hear--I've put this one together and I didn't notice any building techniques that aren't "kosher". Could you point out some?

If memory serves, the rescue in question was rescuing Keiken from being captured by the villainous robots. In that context, weapons are almost a prerequisite xD

I dunno, this model looks a bit of a mess to my eye. Not sure if that's just me, or maybe down to the angle it's at on the box art; but from my perspective, the Mobile Defence Tank mentioned a couple of posts above, 7706, looks like a much more cohesive take on the concept.

The general rule seems to be no real-world military or armed vehicles. Fictional ones are completely cool to TLG, as evidenced by this theme, Ninjago, Star Wars, etc.

Oh, how I dream of an Exotic-Force reboot.
Would love to see it as a Constraction theme as well...
