Random set of the day: Fire Engine
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 3638 Fire Engine, released in 1983. It's one of 8 Fabuland sets produced that year. It contains 17 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 274 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

That's an interesting-looking Toa of Fire.

Darn it, I was just going to do that exact joke. Get your own material!
It's no Bionicle, but it is fire related, which makes two fire themed sets in a row. How will the connections slowly evolve next?

Is it wrong that I believe you on that? X-D

Maybe the next set has a dog in it?

And Vakama Hordika from yesterday was technically half-beast, baying like a wolf in the BIONICLE 3: Web of Shadows movie! Coincidence?
I
think
NOT!
@LegoRobo:
Dude, he's threatening you with an axe if you don't hook him up with a lighter and a smoke, pronto.

(Adds string and thumbtacks to cork board)
Plot twist -- he's not really a firefighter.

Bigger plot twist -- he's not really a dog.
Lego was discouraging smoking before cigarette companies had to put medical warnings.

I believe most of us came here to make some sort of bionicle joke. Some of us are just slower than others.

Maybe a fire dog creature?
Look at us...Huwbot teases the RSOTD community with three Bionicle in a row, the tension builds for 24 hours and then, of all things, FABULAND breaks the streak and the comments go nuts!
This is what I'm here for

How about something from this list?
This is so beautiful. I can look at it all day.
Interesting. It is very subtle, but is this one of the only times LEGO has referenced tobacco products?
Anyway, give them a round of applause for warning kids about the dangers of smoking.
It is important to remind us of fire safety:
On november 18th, there have been the Ballantyne's Department Store fire in Christchurch (1947); King's Cross St Pancras fire (1987) and a fire on Chunnel train (1996).
PS Could Buster be in fact ambidextrous since he has a second personal axe? It is also worth noting that before this set all the firefighting in Fabuland was done with just bare hands. They hadn't even been issued a watering-can.
I’m not sure how he hopes to put a fire out with two axes and a pick axe....
Fabuland :)
So many lovely accessories created specifically for this theme (although the axe was also used elsewhere: 4476, 4707, 7417 and Mickey Mouse sets) and very generous to include three tools in a set this size. Double axe wielding fireman, uhm, firedog to the rescue!
want want want
Before Fabuland dogs were thinking of chopping up smokers, LEGO did kind of advertise tobacco products with 50s/60s localized printed bricks (Sigaretten; Cigaretten; Tabak; Tobak; Tabacchi etc). You may find actual old lighters and ashtrays with LEGO logo... Don't think there were any 'no smoking' stickers in sets before 1980s.
The stuff of nightmares. He goes round targeting smokers with spiky hair, then uses his ladder to get into his victims' bedrooms at night and murder them in their sleep. Ahhh!!!
What I like about Fabuland is if you take away the ladder and base (design element number 5!), and add extra long exhausts you have a sports car 3626, very imaginative.
I recently got a lot of random Fabuland parts and figures for 15$, and a few parts from this set were included (more specifically, the Fire Fighter Bulldog was present). Fabuland is such a unique line, I am very glad I got to own a few parts and sets from it!
A bulldog? Not the more traditionally firefighter-linked dalmation?
The founding member of the Chima Fire Tribe. That explains the abundance of weapons and the thematic vehicle. Sadly this was before the advent of transforming, separating or animal shaped vehicles, so it's more like a prototype.

They have done far worse:

That dog gets as mean as hell when he gives up his smokes - why look, he’s even attacking his own fire engine with an axe...

Oh my...
I have this one. Thankfully he had never been needed to fight an actual fire. He is usually found rescuing Sandy Seagull's plane from the top of the hospital or getting naughty Clive Crocodile down from his hiding place on top of the taxi garage.
I never got the actual fire station - the one that came with a slide for the bulldogs to slide down quickly. That's from the "you are getting a bit old for this" era.
I just got notified that my suggestion to add a RSotD tag has been completed. If you pull up the page for any set, there’s a section labeled “Notes” which will include a RSotD tag that links back to the specific article, and tells you when it was posted.
@holdre007:
He’s a dog. He may be stopping at every fire hydrant, but there’s no firefighting involved...

That makes them pretty amazing fire-fighters, though. They don't even need water. They just attack the fire with an axe. That is pretty hardcore.
Gosh, Fabuland really does segue into Chima without much effort, doesn't it?
Back in the old MOCpages days (the demise of which was unfortunately not covered here), someone made some Fabuland mechs and they were fabulous.
I just realized that the black spot between his eyes is in fact a nose and not a mouth.
I knew there was something wrong with that expression.

I recognized this from Hagrid’s Hut, too... what an interesting history!

Nice, thank you for informing us!
@Brickalili come on now, don't be dogist. Fabuland has an equal opportunity fire brigade!
I wonder if a more "traditional" reboot of Fabuland would be possible with some of the new Chima parts. Might be a fun way to tie in with that Rebuild the World ad from a few months back.
Since the BIONICLE streak has been broken, here's a BIONICLE dog: https://biosector01.com/wiki/Spinax

The sets title was misleading:
The main character actually is a lumberjack with his/her trustworthy tool car thinking to put up some No-smoking and No-fire signs in expectance of future droughts.
Also this would explain why LEGO chose a dog.

Knowing Lego, it might just be an Animal Crossing theme, now that they are working with Nintendo.

No need for external watering tools, dogs have their own built-in watering cans.

Oh no. Now it just looks like a mouth and I can't not see it.
