Random set of the day: Petrol Pumps and Garage Staff
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1470 Petrol Pumps and Garage Staff, released in 1987. It's one of 24 Town sets produced that year. It contains 32 pieces and 2 minifigs.
It's owned by 134 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Good employees, you are doing to right thing as of now.
I see the pumps, yet no fuel lines. This is clearly a front for a more sinister operation...
I somehow read this set's name as "Petrol Pumps and Giraffe Staff" and I was genuinely confused for a second that the minifigs were human. I think that's a sign that it's probably time I went to bed.
Petrol *eye roll* so European
No hoses. The fuel magically flies from the pumps to the car.
Man, I keep waiting for some epic 2011 sets.

saamme bro 2011 is sooo good! I have lots of nostalgia for those sets.
The First 2010 set was 1/7/20
The First 2009 set was 1/3/19
The First 2008 set was 1/25/18 (3rd day of the RSOTD)
Simple, yet effective.
Based on the pieces used and the style, this really looks like a set from 1978 rather than 1987.
Simple, but effective. I could see this as being a side build in one of those big tubs of Classic parts.

Shouldn’t be too long then. I predict Ninjago or City.
Trust me. I’m a professional.
Aw, how cute! Since nobody could fit inside cars to drive them back in those days, the gas station attendants had so much free time they built a replica of the station's gas pumps out of building blocks!

It was made in 87, and LEGO had plenty of cars in Minifig scale by then. But it is weird that the parts for the Shell sign and the Shell icon appear to be from older sets.
@madforLEGO:
Anything that's not at least 6-wide is just a golf cart, go-cart, roller skate, skateboard, or similar conveyance.
Good for getting some Shell figures and nothing else. But who needs an army of Shell figures?

Dare I say it - it is clearly just a shell company.

It was retro in '87
"We found this supply of Shell printed bricks from over a decade ago! What shall we do with them?"
Whoever holds the spanner is in charge of the yellow spanner holder. Interesting that the top of the pumps is not a clear brick as in earlier sets, maybe far too valuable for a freebee?
Wait, are those minifigure torsos printed? With such simple designs, I thought for sure they'd be stickers :o
The Shell logo & typeface appear to match those used from 1971 - 1995 by Shell (quick Google to find that), so it would look like an older set. I quite like this, looks like a good starting point for an MOC, that could easily be adapted to electric charging.

Anyhow, where would you plug it?
I was getting tired of Technic and Bionicle as the RSOTD all the time, thanks for the change Huwbot, so far 2021 RSOTD has been a gas.
You know, this would actually be compatible with the new road plates!
By coincidence I just assembled this set before x-mas from the old childhood stash of mixed bricks and found all parts for it, including the printed Shell logo minfigs still in decent condition.
I have all three sets in the Shell range from back in the day (helicopter, racecar, and gas station) and the old instructions even showed alternative builds for these small sets.
I think these were earned by fueling x amount of times at Shell back then and then given to the loyal customers.
A bit weird these sets were not named "Shell" in any way since it must have been a promotional deal between LEGO and Shell?
