Random set of the day: My Dad
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 3220 My Dad, released in 1998. It's one of 27 Scala sets produced that year. It contains 16 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 15 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

Mister Dad...
You ARE the father!
Oh what fresh horror is this?!
Look at dad staring menacingly through that package. Can you say creepy?
No, *I* am your father.

What’s in the box??????!! WHAT’S IN THE BOX?????????!!!!!!!!
I like how the name implies that this not just anyone’s dad but your own dad.
i wonder how it tastes drinking flower.
Good grief.
Somehow, the neck looks as though the figure has been decapitated and then its head has been hastily replaced.
That wide-eyed glare would have given me nightmares as a kid - what were they thinking!?
To think this was a Lego set...
Well, that answers that. I always wondered why Dad never returned from the Lego Inside Tour
Who among us will admit to being one of the 15 who own this?
Absolute nightmare fuel.
Wait.
Today's random set is My Dad?
That doesn't even look like him.
Can you imagine being a first time visitor to brickset right now, it would scar them for life.
That's not a minifigure.
(Couldn't resist)
I can't get over the eyes, staring out from behind the plastic. This is horrifying.
This paragraph needs to be more clear that it was written by Huwbot. I thought My Dad was a LEGO Idea:
> Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!
I would take Galidor over this any day.
That’s not my dad, he lives in a different house now. That is Mum’s new boyfriend. He always brings flowers and chocolates every time he visits. I don’t like him.
I wonder who that “special someone” is who those flowers are going to.
Maybe your mom?
Hey, at least they used ONE real LEGO brick.
A lot of people seem to have made a big deal about female doll proportions being unrealistic, but what about male dolls (NOT action figures!). Seems the average Dad in this area is a balding, overweight (and often) middle-aged guy about 5'6. Not a ripped 6'Something bodybuilder. There are about 3-4 different body types for Barbies these days; while Ken is still same old same old.
And, my biggest problem with Scala is the headsculpts. They are absolutely terrifying. I will admit, I do own a redhead Made to Move Barbie (which is very highly articulated), and a WWE Eva Marie doll (a very muscular body with pretty decent articulation; albeit not as much so as the Made to Move). I got these to go with the GI Joes I had as a kid. I already had the GI Joe Vietnam Nurse (the only female they did with a good head sculpt), and affordable 1/6 female figures with good articulation were far and few between. I geared them up with some old spare GI Joe clothing I had. The Phicen S23B body (the only other 1/6 female body that is as muscular as the WWE body), for comparison, was nearly $100 with a head sculpt. The two dolls I purchased were only about $25 for both. The Triad female body (with just a swimsuit) is $40, and the old BBI Cy Girls figures are around $50.

Now, now. We’re no longer allowed to pass judgement on Clikits, Galidor, Scala or LEGO paraphernalia such as keychains, remember? :~P (Though I’m really, really tempted to say that Barbie and Ken are my parents. This guy is just an imposter.)
Help me come to life! I would rather not have this guy come to life.
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, and that includes Citizen Kane

Lego Ken. Or this Lego Allen?
What.
This is amazing. Absolutely the best Rsotd comments section ever. I’m trying so hard not to fall in the floor right now.
If this is in Huwbot’s voice... it must be Huwbot’s dad! This explains so much!
I think we need to turn Huwbot off and turn him back on again, this is clearly a glitch of some sort

It's always the worst sets that get the best comment threads.
Hi My Dad
I’m Dad.
"Father of mine,
Tell me where did you go?
Yeah, you had the world inside your hand
but you did not seem to know.
Father of mine,
tell me what do you see?
When you look back at your [plastic] life
and you don't see me?
I was ten years old
doing all that I could,
it wasn't easy for me to be a scared [LEGO] boy
in a [Scala] neighborhood."
With apologies to Art Alexakis of Everclear.
Huwbot has a dad?
Don't forget to seal your dad in a plastic box to mass - produce and sell throughout the world.
Oh blast it all. Because of this monstrosity I spent 20 minutes looking at all the Scala sets through the ages. Sacrificed 20 friggin’ min w this eyesore.
Not even 2 hours in, and already 44 comments!
What a nightmare
Even Galidor figures think this is ridiculous.
I can’t look directly at Creepy Dad without bursting into laughter...
Those eyes are like chucky grew up.
Dad must have done something pretty sutpid to get flowers and a gift to make up for what he did...
Go check out 3158 for even more laughs.
Evidently, people don't like this set very much, as shown in the like-to-comment ratio.
Looks like a newly sworn in US Senator.
I guess the set designer's dad usually wore a blazer, but the graphic designer's dad was more of a T-shirt guy?

That's why I'm here. The title, the lifeless stare through the packaging window, and the misunderstood IDEAS petition all combine to make the perfect storm for this RSOTD
My Mom set when?
When the mere post of the RSOTD makes you loosing you s***...
Is this based off a real serial killer, or were they just hoping to inspire one to get started? I mean, they’ve done at least two sets named “Fire Starter Kit”, so is “Axe Murderer Starter Kit” that big of a jump? Is Huwbot resorting to threats to get people to vote for him on Ideas? My eyes translate it as the equivalent of a computer giving one of those snarly Gollum screams, but my ears expect to hear discordant “Wah! Wah! Wah!” horror movie music.
@TheBrickPal :
I’m pretty sure she’s buried under the rose bushes.
I would play with this.
Bringing home flowers and chocolate clearly means he has either spent to much time down the pub with Ken and Action Man or to much time doing something else with Barbie....

The figure behind the plastic is staring into my soul like Lord Vinheteiro.

You'd think with a neck like that the head would be removable and useable as a particularly terrifying part of a build, but it doesn't look like it. Scala really was... Something

Huwbot's dad?!
Most read/commented article 2021. Calling it right now!
This was made in 1998, the year that people finally could divorce in Denmark. A lot of broken homes were the result. Lego filled in that lost space...

Exactly what I thought. Is that even the same figure? I would hate to have bought a My Dad set only to get it home, open it up and realize it is actually someone else’s dad.
Can anybody explain the “5-10” notation on the box? Is that the intended age range for this product? Or the number of days you won’t be able to sleep after having seen this thing staring at you through the plastic?
You can also be the proud owner of this set for only € 50! Hurry though, there are only 3 available on Bricklink at the moment!
If the prior year pattern holds, of the worst set getting the most comments, we have a contender for Most Commented Article of 2021 right here.
I'm happy I was well into my dark age when this came out. The trauma of seeing this in store might have turned me away from LEGO for ever.
All joking aside: I'm glad experiments like these did ultimately result in LEGO finding the right path and getting the system to where it is now.
Well I was wondering what set could have gathered 70+ comments that fast. Not sure I was expecting Abject Terror in a Box...
Living for the comments under this article!
Yup, he sure said he was just gonna go out and get some flowers... never seen him since.
Although generally speaking I don't mind how the female Scala dolls look, I have to admit that they made a pretty big mistake with my poor old dad Christian. They got his neck VERY wrong...
Kill It! Kill It with FIRE!!!! :)
I think the box he is holding is his very own LEGO Scala 3220 My Dad set.
I think you might have collectively broken the record for the the most comments on a RSOTD article :-)
He might not be my father but he's definitely my daddy.
Heeeeerere's Daddy!
Horrendous!!!! Wash my eyes out with bleach
We all know already which RSOTD will appear at the end of this year as 'most commented on', and the year's not even ten days old :-D
I'm not going to lie, I am super tempted to get one of these monstrosities to use as a LEGO boogeyman for the kids. "Better pick up your LEGO, or MY DAD will come get you!"

It seems that the correct set name is Christian with gifts, https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=3220-1T=S&O={%22iconly%22:0}, so I'm wondering whether one my daughters changed the database entry in Brickset's infancy when they were younger!

So 3220 is Huwbot's father indeed!
From the inventory there are 4 perfume bottles are these the gift in the box or are these for personal use?

No, apparently My Dad here was one of those sets with multiple names for different countries, as he also went by Father with Gifts in some places.
And now that makes me wonder how we ended up with Christian with Gifts and Father with Gifts which are pretty similar, but then some unfortunate country just got ‘My Dad’.
^ Yes that could be the case. I can't find any catalogues with it in to check.
The LEGO Collector book states Christian with Gifts but most online databases look to have copied our name.
There are some who say all Lego parts are Space parts. Anyone willing to accept that as a challenge? But building a Dadmech doesn't count -- too easy.
FATHER!!!

Christian with gifts? I thought Lego didn't do religious sets?

Is this her daddy or her father?
In the danish retail catalog from 1998 he's called "Far" = Dad/Father. It says that it's moms birthday and father has bought her som flowers and a gift.

Well, apparently we all share the same father. Oof
Was I in a coma and just woke up on April 1st?
Who designed this? Looks like a good set for Barbie and not Lego. Maybe it was a former Barbie designer who created this..... or just had a few to many to drink......

In case it’s not a joke comment: Christian is a common Danish name.
I had a look at other Scala sets from the same year... what the heck is 3120 Additional Room? Is it really one baseplate set or is there something missing in Bricklink’s database?

Definitely getting some psychopath vibes from this dude.
When people claim they have insider info into upcoming sets because their dad works at Lego, this is who they mean.
bruh
The popularity of today's selection has encouraged me to dig out my daughters' collection out the loft so you can look forward to reviews of 'my dad' and other sets in the coming days!
Why does Huwbot call it My Dad, when the database calls it Christian with Gifts?

[In the David Attenborough voice]: "Two decades ago, in the search of new frontiers and markets, Lego anthropologists stumbled upon an unexpected and absolutely horrifying discovery: My Dad.
Known to experts as the Christian with Gifts, this species has inspired as much awe as it has confusion and bewilderment. What is it? From what dark place did it emerge? Who thought it was a wise idea, and how do they sleep at night?
Two decades is a mere blink of an eye in evolutionary terms, yet this Christian is almost unrecognizable to modern AFOLs, as though it were a vestigial organ science has no way to explain. Note the piercing gaze, the crazed eyes, the stiff posture, and bright red gifts it brings to entice females of the species. It strikes wonder and fear in all who see it.
Scientists are still searching for the even more elusive Your Mom, but chances are that when she is discovered, Your Mom will be so big she needs two Colloseums worth of pieces to build her."
@Huw:
I hope you figure out if one of your daughters really did rename this, because you might need to arrange daily family counseling on Monday.
@CarolinaOnMyMind:
To be fair, there’s no option to say _why_ you want a set. Maybe they have hated enemies they want to send these two. Maybe they run a really popular haunted house? Maybe they want to collect them all in one place and cleanse them with fire. It’s a bit more disturbing when someone actually has one in their collection and is willing to publicly admit it that’s cause for concern. That means they haven’t destroyed it, or “gifted” it to someone. They might be using it for nefarious criminal purposes, or maybe they need to be institutionalized for the good of everyone.
