This boat floats, and does so in six languages. If you don't speak one of these six languages, sorry, your boat don't float.

I like the shipping logo, is there anything that keeps track of all of the various in-universe Lego logos? We all know Octan but designs like these are real neat

Which of those minifigs is David? None of them look like a sheriff. Or a demon.

Has LEGO produced cargo containers in any standard size over the years or just whatever fits in their respective vessel/train/truck/plane?

@Galaxy12_Import:
You mean besides the time they reused the containers from the Maersk Sealand for the other Maersk Sealand?

By in United States,

A great looking playset with a big, cool boat that floats.

The build looks fairly simple but appropriate for a large build with an age minimum of 6. If they released something like this today I'd buy it.

A set with a pier like this would be a good use of the new road system. This one used the rarely-used bridge segments from the late '90s.

This one is used on a few cargo containers as well. I have some from cargo trains. Which leads into the train line which also has its logos. It's quite neat that there's a continuity of big corporations in the Lego world!

7992 uses the same size cargo containers that this set does. I'll have to do some digging to see if any other sets have similar ones, I only remember 7992 because I own it.

Still one of my all time favorite sets; realism and playability all in one.

What did that dude fishing off the end of the dock catch?
Is that supposed to be:
a. a discolored traffic cone
b. some kind of plastic bottle or other litter
c. a brick-built fish
d. the bathtub plug
e. nothing; that’s his bobber
f. other?

We didn't get the fish element until two years after this set, so my money is on brick-built fish

I get it. But it took me a while.
Personally, I think all these minifigs look far too happy to be him.

By in Australia,

I kind of wanted this back in the day, but I’m not drawn to it now.

The mix between realism and play value is good though.

Honestly it would be great to get more industrial sets like this in City again.

I'm half glad Lego doesn't do more or I'd buy them. Getting infrequent City sets that aren't Police or Fire means less outlay from me. We got a Hospital a few years ago. And we get realistic "adventure" theme all the time that may scratch the industrial itch but there's not a lot of stuff that's basic work-a-day stuff like a cargo ship.

Especially when vehicles were 4-wide, cargo containers were usually 4x8. Generally a 4x8 plate with either 1x4 or 2x4 plates on the bottom at each end (leaving a gap for forklift forks) and, if enclosed, three blocks high with either a 4x8 plate or two 1x8 plates on the top, sometimes a 2x4 plate in the middle with a 2x2 round plate with a hole (I gorget the name) for a crane's hook to lift it. There are a lot of sets with containers this size. 7727 1525 63611 7823 6542 60052 are some.

I love this set so much, the stickers on my copy have completely disintegrated though.

I'm a sucker for harbors and always oggled over LEGO sets for them but never got my hands on one, unless Barracuda Bay counts but that's more of a dockyard

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I’m waiting for a modular docks set with some old school gangsters and a boat full of illegal popsicles or something lego would come up with to make it more kid friendly. And a crane of course.

All the Town/Train sets from the late 80s to mid 90s use one standard size shipping container. Totally interchangeable between sets e.g. 4549, 6542, 6539 and more.

I so wanted this set, always wanted my power miners to go with it for what ever reason...

Lol, and as the German text points out: this boat does not only float, it floats properly (whatever that is supposed to mean). :-D

I’ve never seen a random set of the day that I own. But now I’ve had 2 in the last 3 days.
I think this may be something to do with the ending of my dark age

By in United States,

Yes! More major cargo-shuffling sets please LEGO! Give us a standardized container size, standardized pallets, then a series of trucks, cranes/lifts, trains, boats, terminals, warehouses, etc. Again. Just. Do. It.

On a related note isn’t a slightly spaced up version of this used in 5983-1 for its undercover colours?

By in United Kingdom,

The boat is a bit far from the quayside, maybe someone should drop the anchor to stop it drifting any more. Great designed crane which could hold a container without falling over while you turned the knob at the back to lift. Although stationary it was fairly easy to adopt with straight rails along the quayside so that it could slide up and down over the lorry.

These containers also appear in at least 3 other sets off the top of my head:

7992 Container Stacker
60169 Cargo Terminal
60198 Cargo Train

60169 and 60198 both have open containers with a 4x6 float inside, which appear in further sets such as:
60020 Cargo truck
60022 cargo Terminal

By in United Kingdom,

The cargo logo goes back quite some way - 4559 Cargo Railway from 1996 includes it. It also appears in sets like 60198 Cargo Train so is still very current and in use.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is one of my favourite City sets from the 2000s. A birthday present, and I think the largest single hull ever produced, which only appeared in this set. We're overdue another harbour - 2007 and 2011 were the last ones.

Reminds me of that cancelled 1930s/Prohibition era theme!

By in United States,

It's a shame those dock segments didn't get used in any other sets. I imagine that having the curbs molded in made them quite sturdy. There could have been a whole line of City bridges and highways using them, but instead this is all we got,

By in United Kingdom,

Love this set.
I bought it when it came out 14 years ago, and still haven't built the dock and crane, just the HUGE boat.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'm slightly bothered by the wake seen by the ship, they imply considerably more speed than what's advisable for unloading cargo. Or is the crane operator just pulling the heist of a century and attempting to steal a container from a speeding cargo vessel? That would explain the captain rushing to the deck to foil the plan, and radioing for the coast guard after failing to do so. Luckily the blue coast guard ship is already on the scene, ready to... well, definitely not ready to retrieve the container hanging from the rouge crane! And similarly ill-equipped and out of its element to apprehend the rogue crane operator. How will the rest of the story unfold?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love this set, have 1 and 1/2 ships since I destroyed one hull trying to remove the stickers. This set was released right in the heart of Lego's terrible sticker phase where after time they just deteriorated into a million little sticky flakes... so frustrating. But love the freight/cargo stuff.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@SirZed:
I don't know what it is, but it's definitely not a wake. Look at the bow and you can see it's only coming off the port side. It actually extends past the bow, like the ship is slewing sideways into the dock. Most likely someone set one of the containers down too close to the edge of the dock, it fell in, and the waves created when it hit the water are hitting that side of the hull.

@bmasephol:
I'm kinda curious now exactly how you were trying to remove the stickers that you managed to destroy a hull section. Sandpaper? Dremel? Flamethrower? Smear peanut butter on it and toss it in a pit with hungry rats?
