Random set of the day: Galactic Peace Keeper
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6886 Galactic Peace Keeper, released in 1989. It's one of 12 Space sets produced that year. It contains 121 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$12.
It's owned by 4429 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

I want it I want it I want it
This is definitely one of those, "Why the hell didn't I buy this when I was a kid?" sets.
I just noticed the prison cell on the Ninjago Nindroid Dragon took inspiration from this set
This set gives me all the warm and fuzzy feelings. I was 7 when it came out, and it was a gift for my birthday or Christmas. So much swooshing.
I liked the pod systems on the SPII and III sets better, but every Space Police line is top-tier LEGO.
I wish the officer came with a tool of some sort but otherwise one of the best Space Police sets (the smallest one to contain a prison cell)! The little winglets with weapons/sensors can be folded under the large black printed corner pieces or deployed as seen in the photo. The only thing somewhat lacking about the design is the lack of any visible form of propulsion (common to all Space Police 1 ships) that leaves the craft with the prison cell removed looking rather unbalanced and incomplete.
I got this set at a convention years back in like-new condition for really cheap and it's one of my favorites! Simple, yet so swooshable!
My uncle got this when he was a kid and I recently rebuilt it for him. It made him so happy to see it rebuilt again that he gave it to me to enjoy.
I would hate to be cramped in the back. You couldn’t stand or you would get zapped.

My vote to favorite word of the article: swooshable!
The Lego of my heart. Thanks Huwbot.
My first instinct was to say I had this, but I was definitely thinking of 6897 instead. Oddly enough, I don't think I got a single SP1 set. I did get every Space minifig pack I could lay my hands on, though, so I know I got at least one of the minifigs.
@Be_hapi:
Well, if you're riding "in the back", you're in a containment cell. It's not exactly designed for luxurious comfort. I'd be more concerned about the ship stopping suddenly, and that might cause you to slide forward. Since the top of the cell is pointed forward, it's a good thing they let that poor guy keep his helmet...
Gives me nostalgia for a time I never experienced, is there such a thing as second-hand nostalgia? Here's our part stats:
Unique:
2468 3x3x5 convex panel in black with the police print is exclusive to this set (x2)
Rare: None
But good luck piecing this together on Bricklink for under $20
Awesome!
This is my favorite set ever - hands down. It isn't perfect. It looks goofy w/out the lock-up in back. No thrusters...no rockets...still, I don't care. The Space Police figure pops against the dark color scheme, it has fold-out wings with "cameras" (that shoot laser beams?) and this little ship is just fun!
Cool.
One of my favorites growing up. Had to replace one of the “police” panels, but managed to find a good price on BrickLink.
Also, something about this first generation of Blacktron figures (included as the prisoner) that made space sets so darn cool...
My brother had this set and I remember making a Ice Planet 2002 version of this set.

Ice Planet - w/ skis? That'd be cool.
Very cool ship.
What a nice little ship.
Scum Police! Oppressors of the Blacktron! I bet they got that innocent Blacktron locked up on some fake and insignificant charge!
It has always annoyed me that the SP1 ships had no obvious thrusters. Just another reason to go Blacktron.
@Galaxy12_Import:
Anemoia is defined as “nostalgia for a time you have never experienced”, so you could have anemoia for the sixteenth century, for instance. I also found a Reddit thread where someone describes the process by which he coined a word with a friend/colleague. They came up with “Ecozealgia”, which means “nostalgia for something you have not experienced”. I don’t know if that has been widely recognized, though.
So, you could experience anemoia for the era of Space sets, or ecozealgia for the sets themselves.

Fascinating, never heard of those words until today
When this hit the shelves it must've hit a sweet spot for uncles needing a gift for their ten-year-old nephew: affordable yet cool, as we have three of these which all came as gifts...
And I can't blame them, it still looks very swooshable (as long as, like mentioned before, you don't remove the prison cell, that makes it look like an empty flatbed - a streamlined flatbed, but still no more than that).
Together with 6887 Allied Avenger this is one of our smallest spaceships with a fully enclosed cockpit.
This set/theme brings back so many memories. I loved the space sets with translucent windows. Blue/red. Black/yellow. And later line/red/white.
It was my first or second set ever and I was like 4 when I got it. Ah memories - I remember every lego piece of this set :-)
Such an effect with so few pieces! Design elegance at its best!
Who is that one behind bars? Darth Vader?
yes this is one of the best space police 1 sets I've currently been building my own version of this set with my own pieces for a classic space animation.
SPACE police.
Although the smallest spaceship of the trio with 6781 and 6986, I still liked the B model shown here https://www.backoftheboxbuilds.com/?s=6886. I always liked only having 3 main colours, even for the parts you cannot see, as meant you could easily combine with other space police sets to make mega ships or bases which is what Lego was all about to me but difficult to do nowadays.
Awesome little set this, I picked up on ebay for years ago for a reasonable price. As a little kid I badly wanted the space police sets but only had the little buggy set. I now have the entire range apart from the base which last time I looked was crazy expensive!
The best era of Space: explores from Futuron, “baddies” from Blacktron I and II, and peacekeepers from Space Police!
And as others have already mentioned, swooshable space ships :-)
Does anyone remember the promotion comic that was made for Space Police?
It was a one pager that featured two officers transporting a prisoner.
I was hoping for more, but I think it was just that one.
I had this one and two other sets of the line: 6895 and 6831
Two officers were the ones from the comic (in my mind).
And I gave the 6895 driver a head with shades to indicate this was another character.
Adventures took inspiration from the C.O.P.S. cartoon show.
Funny how this one and 6850 had the same "play-feature"

Never seen that one. Any idea if it is somewhere online?

Not quite- although they’re the same design these fold forward and tuck in under the ‘shields’, whilst 6850 fold back to form thrusters.
Although this set didn’t have thrusters, swooshability always makes up for that and enclosed cockpits!

I've been looking. :-)
If I remember correctly it was drawn more like a cartoon.
Maybe it was drawn by the same artist that drew the Jim Spaceborn comic?
Previous comics had always been close to what the sets and figures actually looked like, so this one stood out in that regard.

They’re neologisms; you won’t find them in the OED or even in Merriam-Webster. That’s not to say there isn’t a place for them, only that they’re not official yet.

I have so many of those sets. But this one is one that I actually own.
I had its slightly larger brother 6781 (including the fantastic Light&Sound system).
Awesome stuff.

Because as I kid we had limited funds. Now as an adult this doesn't exist anymore...and our funds are still limited.
*sobs*
Are the bars on that cage, being trans-red, meant to be lasers? That sounds fairly effective, and certainly looks impressive, but is unfortunate for the guy inside if the ship ever turns upside-down, causing him to fall against them...
I re-purchased this recently, and after 30 years, it still holds up really well. I've always imagined that after the Space Police were disbanded, the pilot and prisoner realized that survival would take cooperation and teamwork, and that they'd have to work together, so they made amends and became a 2-man special ops team, with the former "jail cell" acting much more like a drop pod from Halo, Starcraft, or the like. The fact that the Blacktron 1 uniform had a very "spec ops" look to it helped too.
@Galaxy12_Import:
I’d heard of anemoia before, which is why I was able to pull it up so quickly. I’d never heard of ecozealgia before, and the only instance I saw for that was one person describing how they came up with it.
@Zander:
Dictionaries don’t make words “official”. Usage does. Dictionaries just document that usage, and any evolving definitions. Anemoia has been in use since at least mid-2019, but I don’t know how much usage history various dictionaries require before they acknowledge that it has caught on. For a word like this, it’s not like it’s going to be sprinting up all over the internet, so that process could take quite a bit longer than something that comes up in daily conversation.
One of my all time favorites. I thought the feet of the cell were thrusters as a kid.

They also confer legitimacy, or at least, established dictionaries do. In your first post, you may have given the impression to @Galaxy12_Import and others that 'anemoia' and 'ecozealgia' are accepted terms. If Galaxy12 or someone else had gone on to use one of those words in, say, a college application, they may not have done themselves any favours. Admissions officers may look askance at words only defined at urbandictionary.com regardless of how widely used they are.
I got this like many for Christmas and fell in love with the swoosh!
This may have been my favorite Spaceship! Spaceship! Spaceship! as a kid, so swoosh-able :) Still need to rebuild this beauty... Thank you RSOTD!
Oh yeah I had this one. I always wished I had more SP-1 sets, but I didn’t be exactly have my own source of income back then.
Such a classic, love this one. Great looking ship and those pop out wing guns were so cool. Space Police also introduced those slick canopies. Nothing wrong with the classic ones, but these were so elegant.
@Zander:
True. I wouldn’t use “ecozealgia”, but I’ve run into “anemoia” enough times that I might risk it. Assuming it came up naturally, of course.

I would also be worried about suddenly plummeting bottom down. Or maybe I just don’t want my face fried.

what?
I own both sets and it is actually the same: it folds in and out of the canope, even the design of the winglets is the same, they only changed the way the wedge piece is positioned...
@BelgianBricker:
The winglets in 6850 require the canopy to be opened to fold/unfold, while the winglets here have an additional hinge that allows them to bend downwards for folding/unfolding without needing to move the covering black panels.
Best Lego Space set. Absolutely spectacular, especially for the time. And remarkably efficient with the bricks, getting the maximum space from a small number.
One of the last space sets I got before losing interest in LEGO for 25+ years! And its a fabulous set.
The last legoland set I had at the time, I was 14 y/o ! It was a beautiful small spaceship, this design was perfect with these black shields on the sides ! I was so happy to have it. I never dismantled it.

As a kid, I thought they were lasers, but looking at it now, I don't think so. For one thing, why would the top need to hing up? If the bars were lasers, they could just turn them off. Probably just another case of parts being trans colors because it looks cool.
@TheOtherMike:
Why would a car roof need to hinge open for the minifig to get inside? Why would a castle need to hinge open (_HOW_ would a castle hinge open?), or floors of a building lift free? What is built into a set is not always for the benefit of the minifigs.
