464 pieces for $80? This set looks fun, but maybe not _that_ fun. It must be the larger plates and the baseplates in the set that hikes up that price, and I guess also the animal molds and rock pieces. Seriously this set is full of stuff to do, but $80 in 1997? I don't know...
And I just looked to see if I own the set because of donated bricks from an old family friend and the instructions art looked familiar, it turns out I do own it. Probably not going to dig through all the bins to reassemble it though, but it does look really fun. Thank you for the parts generous family, I appreciate all those animals and seaweed. And I'm sure the $80 was worth it for the kids that played with them before me.
Say what you will about LEGO in the late 90s, but this is an excellent set.
What’s with all the good sets for rsod?
I need something to laugh at :(
I distinctly remember, opening a catalogue in 1997 and being absolutely amazed by the Divers sets. At a time when Town was on a (steep) downhill slide (and wouldn't recover for a good decade, or so, afterwards), we had the most gorgeous subtheme in Divers. The emphasis on treasure-hunting, the new animals, all the submarines and beautiful underwater landscapes? I was hooked. I regret not buying a lot more of them.
@MCLegoboy
That was a bit of a 180 in a single comment, wasn’t it?
“This set is NOT worth it! Wait, someone gave me this set? Thank you! I’m sure it was worth it.“

Don't worry, we're long overdue for another dose of Clikits RSoD
Is six BURPs a record?
Great set and even better box art! This blows the bland black backgrounds out of the water.
A bit pricey at $80 in 1997 but it's still a great set.
A+

*seven: 4 LURPs and 3 BURPs
Rapid River Village (6763) have 8 (5 BURPs and 3 LURPs)
and Hogwarts Castle (71043) have 10 BURPs
@Kynareth:
10x dark-tan in 71043 (plus 4x dark-tan MURPs that I didn't even know existed). However, this set only comes with three. The pyramid-shaped ones are LURPs, of which it has four.
@el_maga beat me to it, BURP records are interesting.
Unique:
2448 2x3x6 wall section in blue x2
2621 9x10 compound wedge plate in blue x1
Rare:
2622 8x10 boat prow in white x2
2622 8x10 boat prow in blue x1
2623 8x10 boat prow deck in blue x1
30080 3x4x3 sloped panel with porthole in yellow x2
30095 3x7 bar ladder with clips on both ends in yellow x3
30099 1x5x4 inverted arch in light grey x3
I also like the printed flags, simple but do a lot for the detail.
I must say, even if this set is overpriced, that's a really nice submarine there. Not a very advanced build, but it sure looks cool. Those arms on it are awesome too.
So City/Town sets being overpriced isn't just a recent thing then..
I hunkered down and bought this set with the during the death of Town/City. Favorite part, white shark and the saw-head shark. Also, it did have that boat window piece which I never had.
I didn't have this one, but I loved the Divers line. Wish I had gotten it, the underwater terrain and the shark cage look cool. In fact, the only one I had was 6441, Deep Reef Refuge. Wonder why I didn't get any more, considering how much I like underwater themes? I was only seventeen when the theme came out, maybe I just didn't have that much discretionary income.
@Salafaster: Huwbot might also be waiting to throw some Jack Stone or Galidor at us.
Must be a brick built boat on the way ;-)

"
The boat may not float, but if you look carefully it does hover slightly above the water Star Wars landspeeder style. Obi wan goes scuba diving.
@galaxy12_Import
I would say: 2634c02 - Window 2 x 8 x 2 Boat with Fixed Trans-Light Blue Glass is rare.
Water not included.
The skeletonized corpse of the Armada soldier is a nice touch.

What acronym is used for the newish corner pieces? I’ve never heard CURBs used.
That's a MURP: Medium Ugly Rock Piece.
Still megablocksed off that when I was a kid my parents only grabbed half of the tubs of '90s LEGO at a yard sale so I only got 90% of the underwater part and not the ship from this set.
I wonder where they're diving, with underwater ruins, an apparent conquistador and just that many sharks?
As one of my kids just loves underwater in general I was very happy to get most sets of this subtheme from eBay one day, I think I paid around €70 for 6555 , 6558 , 6559 and 6560 plus some Aquazone sets: 6104 and 6135 which does seem more reasonable than the $80 this set cost new :-)
There have been no regrets as these still are among my son's favourites though they are in need of a rebuild, 6559 and 6560 have been played to pieces again...
I'm not sure about this one but even for that price the underwater terrain looked unfinished to my eyes in these sets, a BURP or LURP just plunked down without even a brick or two to fill the recesses on the bottom is just wrong ;-)
The box of this one shows some alternatives, as usual back then, however they did position the stickers on other parts too which felt a bit like cheating to me.
Still loads of fun my kids had with these and while not very polished around the edges they still are loads better than the general Town theme at the time, glad I had never seen those as a kid...
The hole divers subtheme was fantastic for animal moulds! However this set is a little pricey if you compare it with 6441 that has 2 fewer minifigs and 31 parts, but 2 more animals and cost 19$ less. I was in my dark age when the sets came out so did not get any, but of course got several of of each animal of BL later ;)
This set is a prove that new diver sets are horrible.
I!m not so sure about the rock build but everything else is just grand!
This loos good. A lot of play value
@Virgilnz:
Sometime between 2001-2004, I got sick of all the complaints about how they were jacking up the prices on SW sets to pay for licensing, so I ran the numbers on everything available in the LEGO.com catalog at the time. SW sets cost $0.09/pc, and City/Town sets cost $0.11/pc.
Recently, I started to complete parts for 7774 Crab Crusher to build it again. IMO Aqua Raiders was the best deep sea theme.
Here is my ranking of few deep sea themes:
Divers:
https://brickset.com/sets/list-37122
Aqua Raiders
https://brickset.com/sets/list-35230
Atlantis:
https://brickset.com/sets/list-35119
Guessing most parents purchased 6559 or 1782 as around half the price and still obtained nearly all the sealife, and 2/3 of the builds. I also wondered as a kid with diver sets how you were meant to recreate the split level box art on a flat carpet? Then as an adult I came across Jangbricks underwater layouts and realized where I was going wrong.
RIP beloved old floppy skeletons. Gone but never forgotten.
I have 6599 Shark Attack. I got it accidentally so never opened it.

I agree that the Crab Crusher submarine was one of the best submarines that Lego has ever made ... but I tend to lean more towards the '97 Divers theme.
Lego's underwater themes tend to be more straight science-fiction. Which is fine, I mean, you still get some great builds (look at the original Aquazone from '95. Is there anyone in the fandom who doesn't love those original yellow subs?).
But the original '97 Divers line was pure Town. You know, there were no other elements of magical treasure or alien monsters or giant mutated sea creatures or anything, it slotted neatly and perfectly into a Town setting. At the time, that's what I loved about it, and I still do, to this day.
The last couple of underwater subthemes for City have leaned more into this (and away from the science-fiction tropes of Atlantis or Aqua Raiders or Aquazone), but for me, personally, '97 Divers is still the best.
@ambr:
Like @Zander, I got 6599, but I did open my copy. That got you both color sharks plus the sawfish. The octopus and original stingray I got through other sets, but I picked this set specifically because it was the biggest bang for the buck in terms of sealife, and it fit the price ceiling I was given.
Speaking of the stingray, I’m curious now what specific species it was based on. The new one is a blue-spotted stingray, which is fairly distinctive. I did find an image of a black stingray that looks _exactly_ like the older one (aside from having a white belly), but the page it was on only explained the destructive nature of stingray-petting excursions, and didn’t identify any of the rays by species.

Amen to that! AquaRaider was a perfect theme.
Anyone else remember how in the 1997 catalog this set looked HUGE?
This set was my white whale, managed to get it a few years before the LEGO Movie hyped up prices. I can see why, as a child, it was obviously passed by as an expensive gift. Definitely worth it for someone doing an underwater themed build though.

I'm curious: how did you get it "accidentally?"
@PurpleDave @Kynareth @ sanderkoenen
Interesting those huge corner pieces should be called Medium Ugly Rock Pieces. I considered them Huge Ugly Rock Pieces as they appear larger than they really are,
It's a LEGO optical illusion with other corner pieces too, such as the 4x4 wedge plate lining up with the corner panel piece, because its flatness makes it look wider than the tall skinny corner panel.
