Random set of the day: The Ultimate BIONICLE Set
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8711 The Ultimate BIONICLE Set, released in 2004. It's one of 55 Bionicle sets produced that year. It contains 702 pieces, and its retail price was US$20.
It's owned by 188 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

702 pieces for $20?! Man, they were practically giving this stuff away. Bionicle may have saved LEGO from bankruptcy, but not by much it seems.
Ah good ole bionicle sets. Back in the day where websites didn’t crash to prohibit you from getting “exclusives.”
Oops did I just say that...
So what's the lore on this bad boy
I really wish we got these later in the line where the parts were more useful. The 2003-2004 surplus tub era wasn't great for MOC builders.

Something to do with Karzahni probably
Does anyone know where this ranks on the PPP or Price Per Piece scale? It must be high up there. Regarding the release of Ulysses, does anyone think that TLG worked diligently to upgrade their server capacity by enlisting the team that developed the Vidiyo app?

It's the set the Great Spirit descended with and used to illuminate the Matoran of the Three Virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny.
@MCLegoboy:
It was this, or throw it in the literal dumpster. $20 adds a lot more to the bottom line than paying for additional refuse hauls. This isn't specific to Bionicle, either. Back then, when sets retired and parts went out of production, they'd hit an end-of-life date where they didn't want to warehouse the leftovers/spares anymore, so they'd toss them in the trash. Someone from ILTCO (International LEGO Train Club Organization) found out about this and was able to get them to agree to let them collect those parts instead, and disperse them to all of ILTCO's member clubs. This happened twice, and then they started repurposing those leftover parts for charitable purposes I believe.
@Mr__Thrawn:
The lore is that Huwbot is probably sick to death of hearing about anything related to Space after today...

6th in the 2004 sets Brickset has data for.
Well. This is it. The *ultimate* Bionicle set. Nothing can top this.
The pieces look like they should be made out of delicious fudge.
Oh hey, I had this! I still have the tub around somewhere, but the lid's long gone.
Sets like these were real useful for a kid in the mid-2000s wanting extra parts for Bionicle-related creations, and you could even build some sets from it. Although, the tubs that came with things like the Vahi, Disk of Time, or Shadow Kraata were better imo...
Imagine if CCBS parts had been sold in a tub like this.
The ULTIMATE set. NO set will EVER top this, apparently.
The great thing about this set is that with a bit of white and yellow paint you can turn the container into a Lego-produced Ulysses space probe.
For all of you saying no set can top that one, keep in mind that they can always make the "ultimate ultimate" set.
@brickengineeringdude:
I mean, the lid provides a pretty large flat surface. Surely there are hundreds of sets (many of them even from the Bionicle theme) that can be displayed on top of that lid.
@anthony_davies:
Definitely too soon, but I can still chuckle a bit because I was able to grab a code. But if I miss out on the last coin and you say something similar at that time, them's fightin' words.
The Ultimate Bionicle Set looks a bit like a big ol’ pickle jar.
What's weird is there appears to be no inventory of this set anywhere, so unless someone here owns it, we cannot properly judge the level of ultimate-ness.

I wonder if there even is a specific inventory, of if these things are filled with random parts that vary from canister to canister...
I am pretty sure I had this set, or some other tub of Bionicle parts. From what I can remember, I was able to build the other five Vahki I did not have in my collection (I had 8616 prior to this).
There were other mask and disk goodies included as well. Now those pieces or distributed across several totes, so I have no way of taking an inventory.
Here it is! The one Bionicle Set that can summon the dreaded Meowfra. The only way to defeat him is the Ultimate Ultimate Bionicle Set, hidden somewhere outside Ninjago City!
I would love this for $20.
@brickengineeringdude:
Holy crap. I just checked the closet in my storage room, and this is the jug-o-parts that has been sitting there gathering dust since 2007. It’s no longer sealed, but all the bags inside are unopened. I remember buying at least one of these jug sets, opening it, looking at what was in the bags, and stuffing them back in the jug unopened because you couldn’t even really build anything with just the parts from the set (no axles or pins).
Huwbot picked the 2005 Ultimate Bionicle Accessory Kit 8713 once before last November, in case anyone else is feeling deja vu.

Yea, you can laugh at this if you want, but it probably boosts imagination more than anything else from Bionicle. I'd certainly enjoy it more than just getting a regular Bionicle set.
"Cannot be inventoried"
Well how am I supposed to do my parts analysis?
Hmm, as long as this was just a tub of leftovers there shouldn't be anything unique, small chance that you would get something rare due to many shared parts in the theme...
Oh well, I'll be back tomorrow. Does anyone want an analysis of the probe?
dreaming of a Ultimate Clikits box...but the best themes are always getting neglected

You should index the parts for Bricklink. May take a little while, but it's currently a blank set inventory everywhere.

Hahahahaha, man I feel you.
I don't even like Bionicle and this looks cool!
With no pictures anywhere reminds me of the on line sites which offer 1kg of Lego, but not able to actually make anything out of it as all just miscellaneous parts, rather than any core building material.
I hope I am wrong with this set, so please if someone has this could they let us know if any full figures could be built, or was this just an odd spares tub?
Big bonkle jar.

You should inventory it for bricklink!

Pretty sure it's Teridax's Void Form
I wish they made more of these. Better yet, imagine if they made one with Hero Factory parts.
Were any of these 'just parts' Bionicle tubs ever available outside of the US; or did they not bother with a wide distribution for these since they were just getting rid of surplus leftover parts and were nothing specifically unique?
I just ask since I don't remember seeing any of them here in the UK, even back in the day.

Maybe they just dumped random parts they had lying around into it? That would be hilarious!

@Galaxy12_Import :
I'm pretty sure these Bionicle jugs contained little to no unique parts. Mostly they were just being used to wipe out excess inventory of parts. Sometimes they'd throw in something special, like the Vahi Kanoka disc (but even that wasn't unique to its jug).

"Items which Can't be Inventoried"
I mean, I _could_ try to submit an inventory, but they'll just reject it. However, Brickset comments aren't managed by Bricklink inventory admins, so I've got a little over three hours to see if I can cram my way through 12 bags containing ~702 parts and get something resembling an inventory posted here before the comments are shut down. If I succeed, you'll be able to find _my_ set's inventory here by looking up this set in the database and clicking on the RSotD link that I was able to get Huw to add last year for sets that have been selected to appear as RSotD. That'll bring you to this page, and you can skip down to the comments to see what's what.
Anyways, it turns out I did actually open all 12 bags, but I don't part out sets that I buy for my collection. This means that any of these jugs I got (I'm pretty sure I got two of them, but probably not more than that) was kept intact, even if I opened it to inspect the contents.
@ThatBionicleGuy :
My guess is that any leftover parts in Europe got recycled into new parts, while US stock would have been far too expensive to ship back just for regrind value. Selling them off in jugs like this was a way to recoup the expense, and you could slap the Bionicle logo on everything from toothbrushes to gym shoes and they'd sell.
Regardless, 702 pieces for $20 is a crazy good MSRP.

Whew! One hour to spare, even. No links (sorry), but all of the part numbers are included, and the piece counts for each bag are listed with a running total that hit 702 on the dot. I guess there are a few Technic axles, but only in 4/5/6 lengths, and no pins at all. The bags are not numbered, but I did that so it's easier to keep track of what you're looking at. I corrected a couple part names and colors, and shorthanded all of the Kanohi.
Speaking of which, I suspect it's the Krana that are mostly at fault for Bricklink refusing to inventory this set. Kanohi may be a secondary factor, but most of these are either primary Toa/Nuva masks, or colors that were not included in mask packs. I ran across three elements that were exclusive to Star Wars sets (excluding this and at least one other Bionicle jug), which is really weird. Enjoy. I'm going to go take something for this headache, and grab something to eat (all I've had since I got home was one of my Batman Hershey bars).
You're a legend @PurpleDave
@MCLegoboy:
Clearly I'm a glutton for punishment. Stuff like this is why I got burned out from running MoD.
Anyways, I just tried to drop a line to the current staff of MoD, and the two default e-mail addresses I tried both appear to have bounced. If anyone is in contact with the current site staff, maybe drop them a line to let them know this inventory now exists somewhere. A full article with links might be cool.
