Random set of the day: Arctic Expedition
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6573 Arctic Expedition, released in 2000. It's one of 45 Town sets produced that year. It contains 121 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$15.
It's owned by 2336 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

Alien spider!
“I’m picking up a signal. According to this, there’s a funky-looking snowplow and an ice boulder with a large, radioactive spider inside somewhere close by .”
I remember I needed a specific piece for something I was building -- back before I discovered Bricklink -- but there was a photo of this set, disassembled, in a Lego catalogue, and it had the piece I needed (a small blue plate, IIRC). So that's why I bought this set ... but I ended up really liking the set. I mean, that is one sexy snow-plough. Plus, orange is my favourite colour, and the Arctic theme was really a turning point in terms of Lego producing orange pieces.
WHOO! I adore this whole Arctic line, and I always will :)
Weird take on Spider-Man’s origin story
@MCLegoboy:
Eh, spiders we can handle. It's the scorpions you have to watch out for. Especially if they're wearing hats.
@Zordboy:
Arguably, the turning point was one year earlier, with the introduction of the Star Wars theme. Excluding TNG, I don't remember having a single orange part before buying the X-Wing, Snowspeeder, and Mos Espa Podrace sets.
As a snowplow it is adequate. As a vehicle in LEGO Racers 2 it is top gear material. Interpret that however you like.
Unique: 1
32059 4x6 plate with angled corners in orange x1
Rare: 1
32086 6x8x3 angled canopy in transparent dark blue x1
*now with rc compatibility*

Color Guide to the rescue! Orange has been around since 1993

However, it was only ever in Duplo for one set in 1993, and mostly Scala in 1998, so with the exception of one Halloween basic brick set, it really wasn't until 1999 that Orange became more prevalent in commonly used parts, so you are correct in that regard.

Also I have no idea what you're referencing, but I'm sure it's hilarious. Scorpions in hats do sound quite dangerous.
We have located the snow meteorite.
The other guy has to walk back to base
That's a pretty awesome looking snowplow-tank thing there, with that big trans-dark blue windscreen and the warning stripes on the plow.
Does the driver’s cap have to be worn sideways to be able to fit under the canopy?
Yay, another classic Arctic set.
Wasn’t a fan of those big windshield pieces without any hinge attachments though.
My very first set! (Besides Duplo)
The original Arctic series is also my first and only 100% complete subtheme! Lots of good memories of this one.
Paint it white, remove the plow, and swap the treads for wheels, and you have the pickup truck the contemporary Lego space agency used for satcom in remote locations. That's a versatile platform that would make any automaker proud.

I don't know. The driver of the white pickup truck I mentioned above could wear his cap inside with the brim facing forward. It looks like the driver of this snowplow has a seating position that's higher by one plate; maybe that makes it impossible to wear the cap facing forward.
@MCLegoboy:
Look up "fleebnork". This subtheme had a few critters in TNG, TNO, and trans-blue, and the largest set is the only one that had a TNG scorpion. Someone came up with an idea to use that rarest of Arctic creatures, it proved popular, and even though the guy who came up with the idea seems to have fallen off the face of the planet, those little guys are in very short supply with high price tags.
I lucked out on them during my Bionicle days. The guy who came up with the idea had basically cornered the market on them, buying up any large quantities as they popped up and selling them one at a time at exorbitant prices with inclusion of a modest "containment unit" MOC. However, he got distracted with his new "3vil" faction (which got immortalized as the Space Skulls in the Factory theme), and I managed to snipe a fairly large haul at shockingly reasonable prices. Sometime in the last year or so I finally ran across my Fleebnork brood, which consists of 129 TNG scorpions sporting 2x2 TNG radar dishes, and a custom-built Fleebnork Queen, all of which are housed in a Nuhvok pod. I really need to do something with them someday...
I was never a fan of that windshield. Not very useful, and also it's not hinged.

Grand Admiral Mark Sandlin.
What a godawful set, sure you get the snow plow type pieces, and cat treads, but that @$% windshield...Ugh...
Keep ploughing guys, Captain America is just under the next snow bank!
TNG?
I never knew LEGO made Star Trek sets.
As for this RSOTD though, thank God I was deep in my dark ages at the time. One wonders how LEGO survived these times. Perhaps it truly was Star Wars that saved them.
I have this one, but I'm really having trouble thinking of anything to say about it.
He has a snow plow for the Arctic and a bucket to empty the ocean.
Since no one has mentioned it yet, I'm gonna do it: LEGO RACERS 2!
I never actually had this set, which is a real shame. I only owned the big set, 6575 Polar Base. I wanted this and 6520 Mobile Outpost. And possibly 6586 Polar Scout. I think it was a toss-up between this and 6586.

He can have it the regular way. :)
