Another theme that should return in some way.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I happen to be half-Viking, and I skipped this entire theme because I didn't like the Technic animal designs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was the only set I got from the theme. I loved it, but eventually, all things must go into the loose parts; Ragnarok. I'd say the Midgard Serpent won, but it was also lost into the various sorted bins. Although I've probably used its parts more than anything else from the Ship.

Ah yes, Vikings. Those heroic warriors known for defeating all sorts of mythical creatures.

I thought that was half of the appeal to the theme. It was half System, half Constraction, and it kind of worked for me since it maintained that aesthetic in each set. You had the System heavy and Technic light Viking stuff, and the Animals were full Constraction with some System, it made them monstrous and a little unnatural. I kind of regret not getting more from the theme.

By in United Kingdom,

Vikings has always been one of my favourite unlicensed themes, although I only got one set (7017). I've been picking up some of the viking torsos on bricklink, as well as those shields from the side of the boat. Would love to see the theme come back.

By in United States,

I never liked the anti-aircraft missile launcher...I mean...ballista mounted at the front of the ship.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Reminds me of Voyage of the Dawn Treader

By in United States,

Bionicle fans might remember that this set, combined with Rahaga Iruni and Toa Mahri Kongu basically gave us most of the key parts we needed to make our own dark green Rahkshis.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never owned any Vikings sets (way before my time) but I am a big fan of them. I really think TLG needs to get its act together and release a new medieval theme like this one, or preferably something like the fantasy era.

Gravatar
By in United States,

How did they even fit the set name on the box

Gravatar
By in Japan,

This was released in the middle of my Dark Ages, fortunately I was able to purchase the Viking Fort and this ship some years ago. It was used and incomplete, but still worth it.
This is a theme that definitely should come back one day.

By in United States,

This puppy's been on my wanted list for ages, but secondhand prices for it are crazy!

There's not too much lore for Vikings outside the Norse Mythos it was based on. Long story short the blue and red Viking factions were at war, with both each other and giant monsters like this. Funnily enough though, the Series 3 Fisherman mentions the Midgard Serpent in his bio, so it seems the beast survived the fray!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I still have this set and I can say that it sure is a beauty. If it wasn't for the Avatar Fire Nation Ship, I would say this might be the best ship-type set Lego has ever released.

@GSR_MataNui:
It survives until Ragnarok, when _almost_ everything dies. But not quite everything. Two humans and quite a few of the less famous Norse gods survive to recreate the world. The Midgard Serpent, Jormungandr, is specifically killed by Thor, who dies of poison from his wounds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only set from this line that I never got as a kid. Some day I'll put the money down to finally add this set to my collection!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really wanted the ship and the fort when they came out. Now I find the ship too, well, juniorized. The prefab hull parts aren't necessarily any more juniorized than pirate ship prefab hulls, but there's much less built up on them. The Mega Construx Viking longship from a few years ago had a really excellent build, but I didn't end up buying it either.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'd love to see the a modernization of this theme or a mythology based one that expands on the CMF Greek/Viking characters.

Gravatar

Wild box art man.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My very first purchase via LEGO Shop mail order was the entire Viking line in one big bundle. If I remember right, that was the only way to get them at the time—they weren’t available at retail.

My kiddo and I just last week dragged them out of storage and started building. We finished the “catapult versus wyvern” set, and are now on the longboat.

Vikings is definitely in my Top Five fave themes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love this set. The serpent is cool and the ship was the first big boat I really owned. Also this theme was the first to give us those now fairly ubiquitous horn/tooth pieces I believe so that’s neat

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sadly I was in my dark ages for this, but it seems like such an underrated theme that doesn’t get referenced much nowadays.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

A superb theme and a set. Creatures could have been handled better though.

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

Interestingly enough, they didn't include this theme when we had the chance to vote for 90th anniversary set.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm fairly certain I purchased this set, back in the day, purely for the awesome sea serpent.

I found it second hand for 25€. Sorry

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Deep in my dark ages. Pity, as it looks like a cool set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely a set that looks better in real life than on the box.

Like others would love to see it modernised.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I've never seen this before. This looks cool!

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

I have all the 2005 sets, and I remember spending a looot of time going on adventures with the Vikings. They are all in one box and on my "restore" list!

You’re telling us one of your parents is an actual Viking! I don’t think I’m alone in wanting more details!

I disagree, in my opinion Vikings struck the perfect balance between pre-fab and brickbuilt when it comes to the creatures.
That Midgard serpent head is an excellent piece IMO, I got five of it from Bricklink and I find it a very useful piece for all sorts of Constraction creature MOCs.

The same can be said about the other dragons and creatures from this theme. Heck, the dragon wing pieces that were introduced in this theme are still in use even today.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

This wast he theme that took me out of my Dark ages. I was always disapointed that they didn't make more sets of this theme.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Looks like lots of play value. Unfortunately I never got a single set of this theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have (most of) the ship, with 1 Viking from a job-lot I bought from a Charity shop. Really like the design of the serpent emblem on the sail. Some nice prints on the shields.. Hard to display though and is currently in a box under the stairs!

Vikings Theme had some great sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely brilliant set, even for the eye-watering price I paid for it 15 years after release!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The set name sounds like a heavy metal album title!

I still have the Nidhogg dragon 7017 from this theme in my display collection which I bought when it was released.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have this set and 7019. I wish I had bought them all!
@tttwlam I think they were exclusive to ToysRUs.
@NotProfessorWhymzi well, go ahead and eat your chicken raw. :)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This brings me back... my first big set. Lovely :D still has a beautiful place on my shelves. Such a ridiculous theme, but wow had I fun with it :) just setting up some figures and mowing them down with the balistas.. crazy.

Well it’s not like they were going to give us a “The Sacking of Lindisfarne” set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sadly missed out as only 7 sets over a 18 month period, with this the 2nd largest after the octagonal fort 7019 . The boat front (identical back) and middle only ever appeared in this set which is a shame as lots of potential. They do still appear in the UK secondary market at not unreasonable prices compared to if they were released today.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have lots of nostalgia and happy memories playing with this set :) One of these days I will have to build it again...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’d love an update of this with a brick built ship

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was working for Toys R Us in the USA when these came out as their exclusive. Each store had a large aisle pallet display with four open sides for the product stock and a complete display on top featuring all the sets in the first wave built and glued as all official Lego displays were. I was allowed to take the display top home when it was scheduled for destruction. I still have it as a prominent art piece in my home. It's one of my favorites.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

OMG - I looked for this set on Bricklink on Monday! Super expensive but I can see why the after-market price is high (such a lovely set)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I used to own 7015-1 Viking Warrior Challanges the Fenris Wolf, 7016-1 Viking Boat against the Wyvern Dragon and 7017-1 Viking Catapult versus the Nidhogg Dragon. Of these, I used to own two of 7015-1 and 7016-1.

Eventually I sold all of them because I ran out of space and the juicy aftermarket prices they generated... all but one 7015-1. This january I became heavily nostalgic and started to repurchase the few 'important' sets I sold at some point. And boy, those prices aren't so much fun when you try to get them back! Fortunately my long game paid off and I managed to get 7016-1 and 7017-1 back again for decent prices that month.

I think the larger sets are neat, but if you don't have a lot of shelf space or money I would definitely recommend the smaller sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Am I right in recalling the booklet showed an alternate build? Possibly a pier/jetty. I might have to dig that booklet out..

Yes, you are right. It was a pier with a smaller Viking ship beside it.

That's true, I only got the Viking Fortress and while I love it I wouldn't mind having bought this featured set. That sea serpent would have been mighty useful on my Undersea area. I need to look for a place where to place the Fortress now that I remember.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@MCLegoboy:
While Technic can allow much more organic builds than System, they really pushed the lower limit of scale. Fenrir looks like one of those robot dogs being developed to lug equipment for military troops, and Jormungandr looks like one of those cheap plastic snakes you can sometimes find at zoos, which you can make “slither” by holding the tail and tipping them from side to side.

@Kynareth:
On my mom’s side, two of my great-grandparents were from Norway, and the other two were from Sweden, both Scandinavian countries that were home to Vikings. Then again, Normandy in France was settled by Vikings, who eventually went on to conquer England, so there may be some Viking blood on my dad’s side of the family. His ancestors came over before the Revolutionary War, though, so it’s a lot harder to track back where they came from. So, I claim half Viking, half European mutt.

@SearchlightRG:
Of course not! That would require making minifigs of monks, and they have a standing policy of steering clear of religion so as to not offend anyone.

By in Netherlands,

With the Valheim game, this is totally actual again

(Viking survival game that also has longships and sea serpents)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would be cool for Vikings to make a comeback and also be an interesting transition between System and Technic, System builds for the minifigures and Technic builds for the monsters.

By in Belgium,

There was one “Viking” ship before, 6049 Viking Voyager. No clue why one of Lion Knights theme sets was named after Vikings :)

I had that set , they probably called it like that due to the "dragon" head on the ship shape, and the row or rowers (using spears but still).

I assume Viking Voyager is the US name, I see the UK name is "State Barge with 5 Knights" in 1987-1991 UK catalogues on brickset.

Dutch name was Galjoen met Bemanning (Galleon with Crew)
French name was le bateau de chevaliers (The Knight Boat)

Interestingly enough , the other Castle boat 6017 : King's Oarsmen
was called Le Drakkar in French which is a Viking Ship type

But then the UK/Dutch names were just Knight Ship / Ridderschip for 6017

I was good by the name in Brickset’s database, no clue how it was called in Slovakia back in the day I got it. And I still have it :)

By in Canada,

I was in some sort of sombre-age at the time (was still buying some sets here and there but not building any - not a full dark age!) But I bought this one and the fort for one of my nephew for his birthday and for Christmas. He still owns them and were very popular.

It seems Lego is having some sort of reluctance to launch/restart themes. I can understand that a theme is hard to maintain as you have to produce several sets on a theme every year - eventually you have been around the subject and there isn't much you can add. On this, I propose the theme: Myths & Legends. With this, you can do all the Greek/Roman/Norse myths, you can also explore North and South Amercian myths, European and Asian myths without forgetting African and Australasian Myths (for which I'm much less familiar but I'm sure there are some). You can even work on some national lore. This would be a very good way to be extremely inclusive of all cultures around the world (educational). In a given year, not all sets would have to be related to a given realm: for example, you could have Jason and the Argonauts, Baba Yaga, Icarus and Deadalus and let's say an Amerindian legend and an Asian legends which I know nothing about (but would learn about it in the process of buying the set). There is so much possibilities, that would bring tons of news minifigs (for those who likes that) and again would be educational (I really like when Lego does a bit of education in their instructions booklets and also like stuff out of the beaten path).

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

I just discovered the "Catalogues" tab on the set's info page, what a cool feature to get daily doses of nostalgia!
However, the 2005 ones lead me to a ship from Harry Potter, which is on the page before it.
There parameter seems to be correct (page 14), but I end up on page 12.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I would have liked it as a kid back in the day. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I might have got more from this theme if it hadn't been released the same year as Revenge of the Sith, the ranges of which from both Lego and Hasbro consumed much of my pocket money that year. As it was, I dipped my toe into this theme briefly with 7015 as a birthday present, and I loved the wolf design in particular, but didn't pursue it any further. The fact that none of the Viking warriors were named characters, unlike most of my childhood themes to that point, also lessened my inclination to invest in it if Lego wasn't going to tell me who was who, and what their personalities were; at the time, that was a very important factor to me when it came to new themes.

Nonetheless, it was certainly a very cool theme and, in hindsight, would definitely have been neat to have got more of it.

Ah well xD
