So what is this supposed to be

By in United States,

I've spent the last three days kind of praising the RSOTD and now I get this, and I can't really say anything good or bad about it. It has put me into an existential crisis...

Sure is an interesting... thing.

A guy sitting in the Himalayas giving you his unsolicited political opinions.

One of my favs. I have very fond memories of trying (and failing) to build this as a very young kid. No idea what it's supposed to be exactly, but as a kid it sure was cool...

By in Canada,

Mountain sold separately. Rambling not included.

By in New Zealand,

Ooh, red pistons!

By in Ireland,

The alternative model is a robot that moves head and arms when moving.
Quite fragile.

The mountain rambler is ok, quite cool on a shelf.

Halftrack? But with the sport package instead of the WWII one.

It is an Off-Road Vehicle, meant to climb on Mountainous areas. I don't know about you, but it looks pretty cool to me. It seems like you can even fit one of those Technic figures inside it...

By in Turkey,

I like the style. It looks more Technic than what we have today.

Wondering the same thing. TLG intervention I guess... @huw

From the time Technic designers took LSD to come up with whacky, futuristic vehicles. I love it! With 8642 the prime example.

I didn't know of this set, it looks pretty cool, with all the functionality you'd expect from a current
€ 150 set :-P

I'd like to see a Technic mountain. No, not by pile-up technique.
Nevertheless, one of the rare occasions I wanted a Technic set as a kid. Bought it last year, seller additionally sent one specimen of its alternative model along.

I was too late to see it... what was it about?

As for this set, it was one of the last sets I got before my break from Lego, and I loved it. It felt very modern and cool at the time (especially the transparent engine with red pistons), but still rooted in traditional Technic and didn't feel cheap.

LEGO banned Two people permanently from buying at lego shop @home because they were buying sets and reselling it on bricklink. Few hours after posting article about this situation it was removed and huw didn’t said anything about it. I don’t want to attack him or something I just want to know what happened.

No need for conspiracy theories.
Somebody had faked screenprints of emails showing them getting banned from S @H . It was 100% fake, and Huw should have done some due diligence before publishing the article.

By in United Kingdom,

The original poster of the information in the forum backtracked on his story once I posted it on the home page. It seems he was was also responsible for posting a similar email from LEGO CS on Reddit and drawing attention to it on Reddit in the BrickLink forum.

The Reddit and BrickLink posts were subsequently deleted. It's possible there is some truth in it but given we can no longer (or could never) confirm the veracity of it, I deleted it from here and banned the user from the forum.

In hindsight I should not have published but given the multiple sources of the information and the quality of the fake emails, plus the fact that LEGO could in theory do it, it seemed credible at the time.

The user hadn't just joined the forum to post it, he'd been a member since 2016. If it was all a hoax, I don't understand his motives, to be honest...

I saw that and it was chatted about in the forum, apparently the accusation was false, hearsay and/or a joke that got out of hand and reported seriously. Guessing the article got removed due to dubious credentials, but rather than just deleting there should definitely be a clarifying statement as the uncommented removal of it when notifications went out about the original article definitely appears very suspicious, even if entirely unintentional.

Rusty pistons? And you want me to go driving up a mountain in this?

By in Canada,

I imagine this scenario:
We have a bit too much of these eclectic parts. Devise a set that contains no more than 250 pieces and will use all those parts so we can get rid of them.

I've never been a fan a rubber Lego tracks. Either they are too loose on the sprokets and if you tight them up then the force needed to make them roll is too much - much prefer the plastic ones (big and small).

Maybe it was an attempt at fearmongering. Lego bought Bricklink, so the user tried to make the public think Lego are spying on Bricklink users, and can trace your IP and match it to a LEGO.com order.

Bought this at the LegoLand shop in Billund as a 13-year-old making my first trip to Europe. Still have the box and everything. I always liked the boxes from that era with the flip-up lids to reveal a see-through portion with the parts in a tray.

Oh, ABSOLUTELY THIS. I sometimes think about those boxes, and miss them when I do. I rarely got big sets during their era so I only owned, like... one? maybe two? of them... by the time I was buying bigger sets more frequently in the early 2000s, that style had been phased out. But I always loved looking at those in the toy shop, lifting the flip-up part to see the parts rattling around inside...

Sometimes they even had a couple of minifigures pre-assembled and packaged in such a way that you could see them through one of the 'window' portions, too...

By in Netherlands,

Six years earlier, Lego released 8820, which is also a Technic vehicle with the name Mountain Rambler. I have an idea what that thing is. Unlike this creation.
