Calling it now, Zane is the best Ninja, end of discussion.
This was my first Spinner set! This sparked a long love of Ninjago that continues to this day even though I haven’t gotten a set in a while due to money and space.
I recognize this one - definitely still have it from when it was new!
Zane just took one of the handles off of the Nunchucks and tried to pass it off as a new Golden Weapon, didn’t he?
Those white bricks you got there Zane could be the start of a great Blacktron ship. Just get a lot of black ones to go with them. And then get some trans neon green cockpits to complete it.
Love to see Ninjago on here now!
Zane, Nindroid of Ice, was a robot build by Dr. Julien to act as his son who was eventually imbued with elemental powers by the previous master of Ice. When Dr. Julien was on his death bed, he wiped Zane's memory so his son wouldn't have to deal with the grief, and the robot left his lab to integrate with society, unaware of his origins.
In hid quest for purpose and to discover his humanity, Zane was taking in by the wise Sensei Wu and trained to be a Master of Spinjitzu. During the Ninja team's first proper quest Zane ended up recovering the Shuriken's of Ice and later returned to their temple to make amends with their guardian. Zane befriended Shard, the dragon of ice, and the two formed a close bond as they protected the Golden Weapons from the forces of evil. To celebrate their bonds Zane gained a (magical?) set of robes known as the Dragon Xtreme Gi that he would wear whenever he rode Shard into battle.
For all of you unfamiliar with ninjago, dx stands for dragon extreme. Which doesn’t make much sense considering there is no dragon in this set whatsoever...

A not so subtle way of encouraging people to buy the Ice Dragon set that came out the same year?
@MCLegoboy “Zane” is a weird way of spelling Jay
I wish these spinners continued with the line instead of ending after 2012. These things are probably my favourite LEGO line, even moreso than BIONICLE or Star Wars. Cheap, extremely playable and collectable, what more could you want? These gave me an easy way to collect all the characters I wanted without having to spend my limited funds on the full sets. Also encouraged me to spend time making mocs for the figures since I didn’t have any locations or vehicles to go with them. I have most of them, and my best friend at the time had all the ones I was missing. Countless hours spent having spinner battles and wondering where the show would go next episode. I remember when the Lloyd ZX spinner came out it had a card that was so OP it broke the game and we had an agreement not to use it. If LEGO brought these back today, exactly as they were with the cards and all instead of the alternatives they’ve been trying, I bet they’d make a killing.
Casual reminder that Lego Toilet has more supporters than Huwbot

No kidding! 2111 (which was RSOTD a few months ago) was my first spinner, and this was my brother’s first. My parents brought the two of them for us in early 2011, in the theme’s early days. I admit, we collected a lot of them and really enjoyed playing with them. However, I think most of them have ended up in the parts bins, although I still have Kai.
The DX outfits are still one of my favorite variants. It’s a shame that La-Loyd’s DX outfit didn’t really match the other four (though, technically, Cole’s outfit didn’t either). And of course Nya still hasn’t got one.
I can't help but feel a little nostalgic seeing this. It was my first spinner set. Ninjago will always hold a special place in my heart given how many great memories I have associated with it.

We need to support Huwbot, but that toilet is awesome.

To be fair, I feel like Ninjago's initial launch wouldn't have been even half as successful if it weren't for the spinners. Those things hit the market at the exact right time, when the Bayblade craze was at its peak. On top of that, also including collectable trading cards in those sets was a brilliant idea, that really drew a lot of people in (I still have all my cards lying around somewhere).
The spinners have sparked a new trend in LEGO of releasing those 10$ gimmick sets alongside the normal retail sets of each "Big Bang" theme, with other things such as the Chima Speedorz and the Nexo Knights character packs. However, none of those other gimmicks were nearly as successful as the original Ninjago spinners.
This really goes to show how far a clever idea and good marketing can get you.

Thank you! That was kind of bugging me. I'll give you a shout next time we get a ninjago acronym I have no idea about! XD
I still don't understand why they made a new mold for the 1x1 tile with a clip (the red piece in this set). It only appeared in these spinner sets.

The thing is, Lloyd and Nya never had these in the show because neither of them had a bond with a special elemental dragon. Also, neither were ninja at the time. Ultra Dragon doesn’t count because it is the previous four combined. Loki’s variant is not part of the sacred timeline. I mean, Lloyd’s! Sorry everyone! Wrong multiverse. Nya doesn’t need one anyway and Lloyd shouldn’t have had one.
Best Lego Game right there.
Nice set, those cards didn't seem like much back then, but now they sell rather well.
Seeing this set now, regarding those action cards and all, i think this could have been a must have for my boys, if only they were old enough. :)
@LegoDavid:
They were a mixed bag. Kids may have loved them, but AFOLs were just looking at them and seeing a future with a bin full of dusty spinner bases. On the other hand, they did result in a wide variety of highly-desired Niniago minifigs being price-capped just because you could easily buy a spinner pack if the market rate seemed too steep. Plus you did also get a handful of other pieces.
@TransNeonOrangeSpaceman:
Is that the notched version? I’ve seen a catalog entry for those on Bricklink, but there weren’t any sets inventoried for them (and there are at least two other variants that never got catalog entries). They probably designed the new mold expecting it to be a long-term replacement, only to have the mold’s time cut short by the push to convert all clips to C-clips. There was a similar issue with wheels used in early copies of 7779, 7781, and two other sets that I think were part of the Racers theme. They got a brand-new wheel design in either gold or silver, which then got phased out in favor of the dual-sided wheels they favor today. I got early and late copies of both Batman sets, and got one of each version.

The DX is for the costume. The ninja used them to ride the dragons.
@The1RealmShifter :
Ah, but the deeper thing is, you go to college, you start out with a high school diploma, then get a bachelors degree, then a Masters, and finally a PhD. And you’d think Nya and La-Loyd would have to hit all the same milestones, but in order to keep them on par with the original quartet, they skipped a lot of steps. It’s like saying you’re going to advance someone past the bachelors degree because you need the whole company to be Masters or higher. Then they compound the problem by forgetting to issue Nya a PhD when everyone else gets one (or, as seems to be the case with the underwater sets, give her a second copy of her Masters degree with “Masters” crossed out and “PhD” added in crayon).
Story-wise, it makes no sense, and from a collector standpoint it’s just plain annoying. Besides, they did give La-Loyd a DX outfit, even if it’s not story-accurate, so there’s no reason they couldn’t do the same for Nya.
The swords with the round hilts were always better.
@PurpleDave True, but most of the outfits weren’t like that. They were just a different outfit for each season: they were more of a fashion statement than anything else. In keeping with your analogy, the DX outfits weren’t really a degree, but rather a certificate, like a driver’s license. The only ones that actually show some sort of mastery are the NRG outfits, which Nya got this past year.
As far as collector’s items go, should they have made a DX Nya? Probably.
Will they? Unlikely.
Is it a big deal? No.
P.S. I don’t mean to be rude or argumentative, I just want to explain the situation. No hard feelings! :)
@Darth_Mule Agreed!
@The1RealmShifter:
Is your “NRG Nya” the one I referenced, where they just took an old dark-red/medium azure outfit, slapped some shoulder armor on it, and pretended it was the same as the completely different outfits the five guys got? Or are you referring to the one-off design where she has an energy effect for legs? Even when she gets an equivalent outfit, it often looks nothing like what it’s supposed to match.

Well... not really, because Zane DX is also in the Ice Dragon set,

“NRG Nya” is what Lego calls her powered up form from the Seabound sets. Totally not the same thing as what NRG was for the other Ninja, but barring a Legacy The Preeminent set we’re probably not getting a figure like that, if Lego would even do it then. Sadly, Nya seems doomed to leave gaps whenever you line up her Ninja suits with the others’. Apart from the four and a half years before she became a Ninja and thus missed out on all those variants, she tends to get omitted whenever Lego does a new series of suits and inexplicably doesn’t do them for all the Ninja. This year’s “Epic Battle” suits, the Spinjitzu Burst from last year (not to mention a pretty sad “Avatar” figure), Spinjitzu Slam, Dragon Masters…
@Norikins yeah, realized that after I’d commented. Still, as PurpleDave said, it was nice that they didn’t make the DX suits exclusive to the sets containing the actual dragons. It boggles my mind how certain Minifigures that were available in only a single set end up being listed for so much on the aftermarket.
@PurpleDave The one from Seabound. You’re not wrong. I think that because she’s a girl they wanted to make her outfits slightly different to distinguish her aside from using colours.
@SearchlightRG Part of that has to do with how Nya has been treated in the show. She wasn’t in the First realm, so she didn’t get a Dragon Master’s set. Same with Lloyd. Cole should have been the only Spinjitzu burst. Spinjitzu Slam didn’t make any sense for anyone. She didn’t have an avatar in Prime Empire like Cole. Zane didn’t even appear in that wave because he wasn’t in most of the season.
