But, but, but... Nya didn't learn Spinjitzu until she became a ninja! LEGO, was this foreshadowing or are you guys just making these things up as you go along?! :P

By in Australia,

Hm, another spinner. This was always an odd one to me, because Nya didn't learn Spinjitzu Until something like season 5 or 6. But it was the best way to get her in year one, especially the only other sets she came in were the Dark Fortress and Fire Temple, which were the most expensive that year.

I had a few spinners got them back in the day as a kid! These work really good and we’re fun to play with!

Every time I see a Ninjago RSOTD I think"oh wow the first Ninjago one!"

And then I realize it's not.

By in United States,

It's not everyday you get a set small enough you could literally count the pieces AND (between the cards and the spinner) not be exactly sure how many you were counting.

(And, yes, for the pedantically-inclined, I know Brickset literally provides a piece count--but what's the fun in reading that? I'm talking about the taxonomic challenge!)

So...when exactly did all the skeletons learn spinjitzu?"

According to the DK Ninjago official guide from 2011, Lord Garmadon taught the skeletons Spinjitzu. I suppose that Samukai’s betrayal isn’t too surprising then, given that the skeletons could’ve easily overthrown him. If only they’d thought to unionize…

Okay, here comes the lore!

Long ago the First Spinjitzu Master created the land of Ninjago to express his powers of elemental mastery. Sometime after the land's creation, the FSM realized it would need protectors from the evils of other realms, and so he imbued a handful of his closest human followers with elemental powers. These Elemental Masters would go on to be protectors of the realm, passing their powers over nature to their children from generation to generation.

Eventually this lead to the birth of Ray, Master of Fire, and Maya, Master of Water. The two were close friends of the FSM's son, Master Wu, and helped him during the Serpentine War. At the tail end of the Serpentine War the Elemental Masters of Time, twin brothers Acronix and Krux betrayed the elemental alliance and tried to take over Ninjago. Ray and Maya helped Wu defeat the Time Twins, and Acronix was flung 40 years in the future while his brother Krux was sent a few hours in the past. Krux began plotting a way to get back at Wu for wronging him and slipped away into the shadows.

Eventually Ray and Maya settled down and got married, setting up a quaint little shop known as Four Weapons in the small village of Ignacia. Master Wu showed his trust of the couple by gifting them an ancient map to the Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu, so that if anything happed to Wu they could help train a new generation of heroes. A few years after the war (seemingly 10-20) the couple gave birth to two children. Kai and a few years later his sister Nya. The eldest brother had inherited his father's power of fire, while the youngest daughter her mother's water.

But their peaceful life was not to last. A few years after Nya's birth Krux attacked the blacksmith. He and his small army snuck up on the couple, and he threatened to kill the children if Ray and Maya did not help him with his evil schemes. The parents agreed, and so that night after playing in the yard Kai and Nya came home to find their parents missing without a trace.

Life was hard for the young ones, who presumed their parents dead, but Kai was determined to keep his sister safe. He took up his father's hammer, and learned to forge. He would craft weapons and armor for the people of Ninjago to get food on the table.

This went on for some time, until 30 years after the Serpentine War. Teenage Kai was manning his blacksmith when he was visited by a strange old man. The old man wanted to recruit Kai as a ninja in his Monastery, but the blacksmith had no interest. That night the blacksmith was attacked! A strange army of skeleton warriors ransacked the village. The old man helped fend them off, but eventually they got away with two prizes, a map to the Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu and Nya!

The old man revealed himself to be none other than Master Wu, and offered to train Kai in the art of Spinjitzu to save his sister from the clutches of the dark lord Garamdon, and Kai agreed.

Nya would go on have an interesting arc in Ninjago. During season 1 she put her engineering knowledge to the test and crafted a robotic suit and secret identity of Samurai X, in order to join her brother on the battlefield and stop being a damsel in distress. During season 5 she discovered her elemental powers and shed the Samurai X armor to become the Ninja of Water. Over the course of the series she formed a loving relationship with the Ninja of Lightning, Jay. However, all of those adventures are stories for another day, as this spinner simply depicts her casual clothes from the pilot when she was but a prisoner to rescue.

Like the phoenix on her shirt, Nya is a master of rebirth, always bouncing back in a new form stronger than the last. Nothing can keep her down, and nothing can soother her temper. She'll stop at nothing to keep the people of Ninjago safe, even if her anger burns a few too many bridges along the way.

In the show and movie it is always pronounced Nee uh, however in the non-canon videogames they tend to use both.

Technically, Nya did use spinjitzu before she became a ninja. In episode 25 when she turned evil she briefly used it to attack Cole and Lloyd. My guess is she knew all along, but she just didn’t use it on screen much since she was usually using the samurai mech or flying the bounty. Using spinjitzu was also a good way to surprise the ninja team at the time. But she didn’t start regularly using spinjitzu until season 7 I believe, so Lego making this one was a bit surprising at the time.

How do you know so much random Lego theme information? Im quite impressed!

I remember when I first saw this Ninjago wave in the Lego catalogue. I was always disappointed that none of Nya's early minifigures ever had that cool red mask printed on the face (you can clearly see how much cooler she looks on that card).

I'm gonna be honest with you bud, it's mostly just Ninjago and BIONICLE lore I know about.

When I was like 9 I did a bunch of reading of LEGO guide books and Brickipedia and the like so I used to know the lore to things like Exo-Force and Rock Raiders and Futuron by heart, but all but the big two have basically faded at this point. I've still got basic backstories for just about any theme but things like character names and plot twists tend to slip my mind.

In fact I do so much searching for Easter eggs and connections between themes I often forget what's canon and what was my headcanon. (Ex, I always assumed Crainiac was a part of the Spider Tribe from Chima who was released by the Insectoids and went on to become a space criminal, but that's never been actually stated in any LEGO official media, that's just my way of explaining his face and outfit.) While extreme cases like that are easy to keep track of, I always forget the little stuff, like weather Futuron was canonically the future of Classic Space or if I made that up when I was twelve. Sometimes I won't talk about LEGO lore on here 'cause I don't want to risk mixing in my takes with the original stories, but for Bonks and Ninjago it's easier to keep things straight.

In fact, I've never even watched Chima or Nexo Knights. Those are two massive gaps of LEGO media I missed out that I keep meaning on checking out but haven't got around too.

BIONICLE ends up taking over as my special interest every two or three months so it's lore is constantly refreshed for me, and while I'm usually a season or two behind on Ninjago it's story is pretty easy to follow when you get down to it, so despite their size those two have stuck with me pretty well.

You forgot the episode "Wrong place, wrong time", in which the Ninja and Garmadon travel back in time. Things changed chronogically, such as Nya not getting kidnapped at the Blacksmith and going with Kai to the Monastery. The Ninja of the future had to capture her, while telling past Wu and take out their past selves. Changing how Kai met the other Ninja. It may have ended the same, but technically that's the updated lore

I mean, this was back in the day when Nya was only available in the $100 set and the $120 set (or something like that) so even if the spinner set in general was poor quality, getting an expensive fig for just $10 seemed like a steal to me back then.

Waitaminute...

Didn’t the ninja restore the original timeline by destroying the Maguffin that let them travel to the past in the first place?"

I don't recall, but following time travel rules, it still happened at one point

By in Canada,

Looks @GSR_MataNui work/timeline...stands up...begins clapping fanatically, while cheering. In short: Nice work/Great job/Thumbs up:)

Ah Nya...not my first Ninjago figure, no, that would be Zane. She was second; then Garmadon, whose name I always assumed to be a play on 'Armageddon'...yeah, I know: name lacks a second 'd', but Lloyd makes up for it with a redundant 'l'...where was I...oh yeah:
Got Jay 'Year Two' (w/his 'Storm Fighter'), and 'Nya' again w/her mech (knew Sam. X was her via a Lego-Leak...sortta' like I did w/ Pixal as Sam. X2), and on her own (the Sam. X spinner...which I guess is 'wrong' continuity-wise)...

Hard to believe how faaaar this line/story has gotten over time, especially after that near cancellation...

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

I love it how during 2011, Nya was advertised as having elemental fire powers, and that persisted all the way until season 5, when the writers finally decided to make her the water ninja.
That picture of her on the trading card with the fire all around her certainly doesn't hold up....

I always thought it would be pronounced as "nya" :D
Seriously though, it's impossible for me to disassociate from the "ny" letter and sound existing in my first language (Hungarian), which kind of sounds like the first sound of the word "new", so a bit like a cat's meow.

Somehow this is one of the few Ninjago sets I own. This was just after I came out of the dark ages, so I wasn't really into the gimmicks, but a female ninja seemed like a cool purchase.
