Seriously, I got nothing, this actually looks rather quaint and fun.

Set no. 1991 releasing 1993 is just plain tragic, and also confusing.

What makes that funnier is 1991 is part of a bigger set, which is numbered 1993, which was actually released in 1993.

It's very "Inception".

By in United States,

They would do racing trucks again in about 1997... same concept, same scale, but it is not the same. This is much better.

By in United Kingdom,

File this bad boy in the ‘sets I didn’t know existed’ category.

Mid-engined V8 semi truck oh yeahhhhh!!

On second thought, the center of gravity would be horrible with that engine way up there on the back.

By in Canada,

I like the star-studded plate on the front. But maybe that’s just the American in me. Or its resemblance to Wonder Woman’s undies.

By in United States,

The poor guy couldn’t pick a less aerodynamic vehicle to race...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This doesn't really scream "Pick up" at all. It does kinda say racing...

It also does not scream Blacktron, and that is always a disappointment.

I’m pretty sure that truck’s going to trip and do a faceplant the first time you even brush the brakes.

@CarolinaOnMyMind:
There’s another one on that thing that’s probably meant to represent a spoiler.

Some of the best Town sets hailed from the early 90s. This one looks pretty good.

Pick up truck? I dont think so... that looks like a cabover semi.

By in Australia,

I know I should take a disliking to this, but it's just too cute to fault!!!

@gorf43:
Back in the 60’s, some pickups were cabover designs, like the Ford Econoline truck. This would probably fit in the bed of one built to minifig scale.

By using a bunch of tiny plates and tiles, the designer managed to make this set a bloated eighty-one pieces just to up the part count and probably charge more. And for one measly 4-wide! I am so glad LEGO doesn’t do that anymore.

This set is among the First, a line-up dominated by LEGO racing vehicles that comprised the entirety of my LEGO collection back in 1993. After the Mud Runner, this set and 1992 and 1990, which came in a Special Value Collection of LEGO Race subtheme sets, were the only sets I acquired brand new from my parents. The Wal-Mart Supercenter had just opened its doors in my town at that time, and on one of those early visits, my already-LEGO MANIAC self received this and the other two sets as a surprise gift. I distinctly recall pulling the box out of the blue plastic bag and gazing longingly at the box art, looking forward to all the fun I was going to have when we got home!

At home, I started by building the smallest set first and then working my way up. That means Pick-Up Racing Truck here was my second build. It was the most interesting, however, since it was a truck (a vehicle I was fascinated by at the age of 5) and had this huge engine block in the back, not to mention the strange design (again, I was 5) of the rear wheels being elevated by one 2x2 plate above the front set of wheels. The tiles with three printed stars were also really fascinating, as was the method of attaching one to the front of the vehicle--my first headlight bricks!

This set also granted my wish of getting more of the cab pieces I saw in trucks shown in the LEGO mini-catalogs. I got the working doors, the large windshield, and the folding roof so I could place the driver in the cab. I also got those 1x2 bricks with grooves on either side and that was a tactile adventure for my fingers! What I'm saying is that there were so many novel pieces in this set for me that it made the set twice as fascinating. And I hadn't even begun to play with it!

When finished, I spent a lot of time zooming this truck alongside the dragsters, the Formula 1 car, and the Mud Runner. All these helmeted minifigures looked cool together, and I was so happy to have such a collection. My palpable joy convinced my parents that I was ready to receive a more regular influx of LEGO sets and pieces, a decision that in a few more years' time they would start to bemusedly regret! But for me...well, over 760 sets later, here I am. But I never forget my humble roots!

Hmmm....wonder if you flip that front star plate upside-down if you'd summon something...like a better set...:)

Looking over '1993' Town, only set that raising my eyebrows is 1687 'Midnight Transport'...which I'm surprised it not a crooks set by name alone...but that plane:D...speaking of planes:
6344 'Jet Speed Justice'...so...Proto 'Sky Police'...in '93...:|

By in Latvia,

If it's a racing pick-up truck, then it's a racing pick-up truck. I'm afraid that after one nitrous boost the whole back will be off, especially that spoiler.

By in Belgium,

Those headlights though, are they meant to be stickers? Seeing as they're just plain yellow and not trans-yellow?

"Well, you know, race cars don't need headlights, because the track is always lit."

I'll leave the reply to another poster ;-)

By in Poland,

I'm really surprised how many of you like this. It's from my childhood era but I still find this set ugly. I would call this at best a mediocre parts pack.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

From the title I first thought 'racing' was the name of a super fast express pick-up and delivery service. Probably only sold in the US as it would have been mistaken for an electric milk float van in the UK.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Norikins: Wouldn't that song be more appropriate for 6646? It has not just the stars but the stripes.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Never heard of this one or seen it anywhere before.
Then again, a 4-digit set number starting with 1 points to some limited edition or regional exclusive, as every City set I can remember from that era started with a 6.

By in Netherlands,

So, this truck accidentally predicted the Russian flag. The flag was accepted in december 1993, so I'm not sure if they would have been able to know about it during the set's production.
Most likely this colour scheme is supposed to be the US patriotic colours (given the stars and similarity to 6646 Screamin' Patriot), which is pretty ironic.

That said, 6646 is the better set here. I love how they managed to produce something so custom and shapely back in that era where most cars looked similar.
In comparison 1991 is just... blocky

That's because it's a promo/limited set.

I think I have never seen this set.
It looks neat.

“Yeah well so’s my brother, but he still needs headlights!”
