Hmmmm, looks like a promo!

Well, at least they're being honest about it, but that racecar looks cool enough to me to deserve it's own name. How about Furious Five Racer? Or maybe something alliterative in French that evokes the same energy?

Ah, this must be the last gasp of the 80's Formula 1 car design defined by sets like 6503 which I own. In 1993, a new design was developed along the same, one-piece chassis and now featuring Octan logos on the spoiler and driver's uniform.

This Renault-branded one would've been an interesting curiosity to own and help fill out a Grand Prix Raceway. First time I've ever seen it thanks to promo sets being in heavy rotation on RSotD. Hopefully we don't run through a billion different variations of the same set and promotion!

Oh wow! Is that Nigel?

By in Canada,

I would totally build this go-cart for a boxcar derby.

Is this the first licensed Formula One set?

Basic, and follows the designs of the generic F1s LEGO did at this time, but still does pretty good. It surprises me that, at the time, what licensed LEGO sets did exist were not because LEGO paid the company for the license, it was the other way around; as most that were licensed were usually commissioned as promotional items, giveaways, or merchandise.

Actually, Williams.

@GSR_MataNui:
It looks like a pedal-powered toy car that kids ride around in the driveway.

By in United States,

The fact that it's a LEGO set of what looks to be a Renault F1 car makes me strangely excited.

Edit: After looking it up, it appears to be a very very cute version of a Williams FW14, which is really awesome!

@namekuji Sadly he doesn't appear to have a mustache!

The old late 80's/early 90's F1/indy type cars really were neat looking for being somewhat limited in parts. Someone actually used those style bodies with HO slot car chassis to run them around a track.

Better grab the wheel there, pal…

This is actually an early Formula 1 tie-in. The driver depicted is Pröm Osshanalzet from Austria who raced for Alfa Romeo in the 1980s. He’s kinda obscure, surprised to see him instead of Senna or Prost.

Simple, yet effective. Make it red, then it's Ferrari and so on...

Hmmm..."Dear TLG-Speed Champions Division: Ever thought about doing an 'update' on an oooooold set...":)

I assume these were produced to celebrate the Williams-Renault team '1992 F1 World constructors champions', which would have been driven by the 1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell in car 5 (his final position in the previous season). The actual 'Red 5' car was up for sale in 1999 https://www.bonhams.com/press_release/27543/

Back when licenses basically only affected prints/stickers and the colourscheme of sets. Sets meant to depict real-world things were exceedingly rare. And models didn't have to be perfect replicas of the originals.

Oh, and Lego's licensed themes didn't make up over half of everything produced by the company (with the rest being lumped into City, Ninjago or Creator and rarely Ideas for minifig system themes).

Doesn't look much like an actual Williams but that Red 5 printed slope is cool for an F1 fan of that era!

Edit: oops, I see it's only a sticker :(

@Binnekamp:
You know, you hear repeatedly how SW in 1999 was the first licensed IP, and it’s easy to forget just how many non-fiction licenses they had in The preceding decades, including this, Shell, McDonald’s, Maersk, oh so many airlines...

4-wide race cars hold a strong nostalgia for me. I've never seen this car before but it's super cute. Nowadays they're go-kart sized, but as a 1982 kid, these were the peak of racing performance.

This is the sign of a midlife crisis. “I didn’t have enough money for an actual race car, so I got this thing instead!”

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Cool! Never knew they made this. Only one slight disappointment: I would have loved to see a Lego interpretation of Mansell's facial hair :-)

NEW from Lego... 1750 "Promotional Set"!
Named by the same Master Set Namer that brought you classics like 3054 "Motorcycle", 1710 "Snowmobile", 642 "Tow Truck and Car", 1854 "House with Roof-Windows", 3013 "Space Jet", 3225 "Classic Train", and 3220 "My Dad"!

LEGO is now doing recolors of various sets, like 31058 as 77940 and 77941. But this little racecar build is the original recolored model: 6503. So many of the Racing cars from that era were the same build with the slightest of variances in the spoiler or front fender, but they were all pretty much the same thing in different colors.

BL average price asked for new set: US $510.24

@iriz:
For that price, you could buy an actual car that’s about as road-safe as this one.
