Half Tub means you only get Half Parts. 2x4s are now 2x2s and 1x4s, but just cut in half, a whole side's just missing. Occasionally you'll get a diagonal. That's a tricky one to use since you're missing two sides, but it's doable.

So what's the lore for this one?

They really skimped out on the Tub for this one. Only half? Weak.

To think people were surprised when LEGO approached bankruptcy… ridiculous business practices like the infamous Half Tub Plan can’t have helped at all.

The arch in the back looks like two llamas shaking hands.

Perfect activity for half-birthday parties where a half sheet cake is just enough for everyone!

Reminds of me of when I ordered I bunch of blue, yellow, and transparent bricks as a kid.

If I were to be looking at buying this back in the day, I would have made sure I was getting the bottom half.

(I originally read it as hot tub).

Is the other half red?

I have the 'full' blue tub of bricks, released the same year. The one I own has 1,000 pieces and this one's got 500. So I guess it's truly half a tub.

I don't have use for 2xX bricks that much to be honest, so I've never needed such sets.

A ‘half tub’ is another name for a short, fat person. They’re feeling ‘blue’ about it :~P

"So what's the lore for this one?"

Local employee, Jack Jackerson, got lazy at work and only filled the blue tubs up halfway. This prompted him to be fired and he could no longer put food on the table. His wife left him and took the dog and kids, and so he was left alone in a run down studio apartment. With continuous failed job opportunities and mounting debt, Jack fell into a deep and inescapable depression. But then, when all hope seemed lost, he discovered a powerful object under his desk. A tub from his old job at LEGO, cast in brilliant blue plastic. He opened it excitedly to get building... only to realize it was only half empty. "Half full" he thought to himself, and he started building.

I am Jack's feeling of crushing despair.

Hm, the set name doesn’t say anything about bricks, just the tub itself being half. I think the correct way to have a ‘half tub blue’ is to slice the tub in two, meaning you do in fact get half of the total amount of parts as there won’t fit any more inside half the space. However, as with all of marketing, there is a catch. For if the tub is half, who’s to keep the contents from falling out? Chances are your half tub will already be empty by the time you’ve reached checkout. I smell some very foul and deceptive selling strategies here!

I do like the way it was only £10 for 500 decent sized pieces. Although very simple brick builds 4 to 5 year olds find far more easier than making animals etc. from tiny 1 stud bricks, wedges and tiles. Also by only having 10 traditional colours gives more of the same colour for your 500 pieces, with 10x-20x of the same standard brick or plate very useful for mocs.

Half Tub Blue is the name of my next cover band.

Or the name of the new jazz club MOC in my (nonexistent) Lego city.

Only owned by 46 Brickset members. That must be a record low.
