Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 5969 Squidman Escape, released during 2009. It's one of 10 Space sets produced that year. It contains 42 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$5.99/£4.99.
It's owned by 6,401 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Squidman Escape? I guess the cape suggests he has superpowers, but this looks more like a Squidman Arrest.
This is such a great set. I remember the old stop motion vids they made for Space Police 3. This vehicle was front and center, and I thought it was the coolest thing at the time along with 5973.
An easy way to collect one of the Space Police villains.
I ended up collecting them all, I think. Mostly through eBay and Bricklink. I think this was the time in my collecting career when I realised that, with a lot of themes, I preferred the minifigs to the actual sets. I'm not sure it worked out better for me, financially, but I tell myself that it did, and that makes it okay.
My brother did this one scenario where everyone saw E.T. in 3D or something and he used Squidman. I’m not sure if he just chose him because he’s an alien or he thought the Minifigure looked like E.T. Either way, all the Minifigures were horrified and left the theater.
Also, LEGOES PREDICTED SQUID GAMES!!!!$)!!!!

It’s an escape all right: no handcuffs, the policeman doesn’t even have his hand on him yet! Clear case of a still of an action shot showing in-progress pursuit. Too bad the set name reveals the outcome. Or good if you want him to escape.
Squidman dropped 100, space police bribery at its finest, Squidman Escapes.

May we see the animation?
Ah, Space Police 3. The Species-ist of all the LEGO themes. (Notice all humans are police officer's and all aliens are the bad guys. No exceptions to this rule are known!) Poor Squidman is off to get his cape dry cleaned, but is sadly carrying enough cash that the officer pulls him over and arrests him for "laundering money".
How messed up / dystopian is that?*
(*I actually wrote a storyline in 2014 about a future Space Police 4 iteration, using TLM Super secret police vessels as the ships, using the above line of though to it's natural conclusion as as police state, like in "1984". Even made a police precinct for them. It's not a fun place to end up, even by our world's standards!)
^ Search for "Lego Space Police Log." I remember them being pretty funny, too.
I took a while to come around on Space Poice III. They're like Space, only... not quite? But 5984 Lunar Limo won me over.
I always thought it was weird how the box art of the first wave of Space Police 3 shows the (presumably) human space police officers breathing in space with helmets that partially expose their faces. The box art of the second wave is of the city inside the glass dome, which likely contains a breathable atmosphere, but all the space police officers are outfitted with helmets that completely cover their heads and look fit for spacewalks. It's like the box art department had a mix-up.
This is one of my oldest sets!!! So much nostalgia for me with SP3
BUSTED
Also, interesting to note how that small set included Space Police III's big villain. If it was nowadays, this set would certainly have included a random minion while Squidman would be exclusive to the big set of the wave. I definitely can't imagine a Ninjago set with less than 100 parts and Garmadon or Harumi (for example) being included.
I didn't know that this theme ever existed until I saw some sets back in 2019. Guess it never got to Eastern Europe...
@Zordboy:
I have all eleven (technically there are twelve, since the Skull Twins are twins) on my fridge. I much preferred the S3 CMF that uses this head to either of the SP3 minifigs, because the latter two both have a side-eye thing going on.

Squidman? I always figured Brick Daddy was in charge.

It’s also on the Clutch Powers DVD
Hey!!!...It's 'Good Cop'...good to see him up-and-around, 'plastic surgery' does wonders...:)
Own this is one. One of my first.
I remember reading in an interview that the designer used piece 32175 as inspiration for Squidman's head.
Squid man didn’t escape. He owned up to his crimes and spent his days in prison rebuilding himself and his life.
Ever since then things have been looking up.
Man I loved SP III back in the day. Let's see if I can remember the lore.
The Black Hole Gang was a criminal biker gang that roamed a city on the moon. Commanded by the mysterious criminal mastermind Brick Daddy, the thugs where often at odds with the local police force, known as the Space Police.
Among their ranks was Squidman, aka the Mollusk Menace, aka P Squiddy. Most of Squidman's crimes were minor misdemeanors such as vandalism and petty theft, however he quickly gained a reputation among officers for his massive ego and self righteous nature. Squidman claimed that he was "King of the Squidmen" and that he would someday have his revenge on the Space Police and rule the city. Despite his claims, no one was ever able to identify what species Squidman actually was, nor where this kingdom was located.
Squidman owned and operated a small garage outside the city where the Black Hole Gang would stop to repair their speeder bikes.
Squidman's lust for power would soon lead to his downfall. In an attempt to reclaim his rumored empire he built a robot replica of himself known as Squidtron. Squidtron quickly turned on his creator and left him tied and gagged in the garage's restroom. Squidtron then stole Squidman's tow truck and went on an ATM heist. Luckily the Space Police arrived to free Squidman... only to arrest him for his other cries. The force then set off to stop the robotic menace from becoming what his master could only dream of.
That bike looks really cool actually.
Squidman is the best character in the theme. You have to have a very high IQ to do crime in a bright red cape!
I like this set a lot. The figs are great and the vehicle is surprisingly good. It uses just the right amount of parts but has great detail and shaping. It even has a hood for maintenance on the freeze ray cannons on the front. You know, for shooting petty thieves on foot chases.
And I like this theme a lot. I have all the sets beside the pitstop, all uniquely fun to build, display and play around with. It helps that they were all on a discount at one point when I bought each of them at the time.

Haven't there been a lot of themes with humans fighting non-humans?
Love this set! it's incredibly nostalgic and wish lego would produce more original themes, especially ones set in space.
When I was a kid, I got a couple of these sets, including this one, to help populate my star wars sets. This guy was usually in the death star's jail cell along with orange tentacle head dude from the other cheap set in this line. Great memories.
For being the smallest set in the wave, that speeder is a very nifty build with a very cool design. Most sets would just use a standard motorbike body with bits added on, this guy is definitely its own thing
Some won't like to read this, but SP3 was easily one of the best space themes! But next time with less xenophobia, please!
May we get a new Space theme, please?
Is anyone at Lego even reading this or are their eyes already burned out by white Excel sheets with Lego Star Wars profits?
I always thought they should have a set with an Alien Informant type character, to show that the aliens *could* be good guys.
@Rare_White_Ape: Things are looking up and a little sideways, judging by the way his eyes are set.
SP3 had some great alien minifigures. I have Squidman (sans cape) in the underwater-themed zone of my display collection.
Yes, great little set! 2 minifigs, pretty fancy ones for 2009 in fact, and an actually well designed hoverbike, all for a fiver! Every theme should aspire to have a set like this each wave.
@Binnekamp:
Alternately, you have to be very stupid to attempt to commit crimes in a bright red cape, as it’s likely to draw unwanted attention…just as it appears has happened here.
Space Police III was my sons LEGO era, I was (not so secretly) very jealous. We could loose hours just playing with the sets and zooming the spaceships. All the different alien minifigs made great story starters as well - happy days!

I think Binnekamp was being sarcastic.
On the other hand, if red capes are extremely common in the SP3 world (I don’t know), wearing one to blend in would indeed be a smart thing to do.
Louise Dade's Tranquility Base webcomic made good use of Squidman (and his mother) as recurring characters back in the day. "It's his cue to scarper!"
P-SqUiddy RULeS!

Indeed, I see this set and Tranquility Base is the first thing I think of! SPIII was a great line of sets and while I don't have this specific set (it was an era of tight budgets, and the Castle sets were good!), I did end up with a Squidman a couple years ago, which made me very happy. Just outrageously fun.
