Random set of the day: Rally Racers
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1821 Rally Racers, released during 1996. It's one of 24 Town sets produced that year. It contains 196 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$11.
It's owned by 891 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

VROOOM!!!
This set looks like so much fun.
I was going to say "vroom vroom, this looks like fun!" but the first comment basically said the same thing
Hmm...don't know, I think the truck look 'ok'; except the back...the 'support' for the spoiler/plow looks like it wouldn't...
The aerodynamics don't seem to check out.
"The Red Car and The Blue Car Had a Race"
Now I want a Milky Way chocolate bar....mmmm !
(This may only make sense to UK bricksetters)
The light beams don't spread very far. They must be going the speed of light!
I remember having this set and putting the plows on the front of the trucks so they could push hay around because there was hay on the box. I did not understand the premise of this set.
Snow Plow Racers would be a better name
Box art is…bright.
Never saw this one before...and didn't really need to see it this time either! Late 90's racers were getting awfully close to Town Jr. in designs and concepts; this one doesn't work for me.
But for a kid, those big trucks might be a lot of fun to race around the floor! And the spoiler/wing/snowplow prints can be reused to expand the offroad racer fleet (see 1890 as an example).
I remember getting this set as a gift, it came in a long triangle box so you could put the road plate on it and put the truck at the top and let them race down

I remember being so excited for the plate and the plows. My parents threw out the box, not knowing its importance.
Back in the 90s, the design of the "System" logo really bugged me. That "T" in "System" has no horizontal piece at the top which SHOULD be visible near the top left corner of the "E"...but it's not there, so it looks like "SYSIEM". Yes, the red 2x4 brick is supposed to form the horizontal top of the "T", but it's too high and off-axis...so I really can't unsee "SYSIEM".
I recall thinking that the graphic designers probably DID type in "SYSIEM" with whatever font they used and then plopped that 2x4 brick image on top.
I’d never seen this set until 2 days ago….. when I Bricklink searched for a red Octan racing minifig I’d just obtained….. and now it’s Set of the Day!
Crazy
This set was years ahead of itself. Part 98375 wouldn’t be released for another 16 years!
@PDelahanty:
Better Sysiem than cesium.
You think that haybales in the background, but it’s far too neat. It’s actually a big ol’ pile of gold bullion, the prize for winning these races!
I'd probably buy more City stuff if they did things like this at a more affordable price. No gimmicks, nothing silly, just pure fun.
This was one of my very first LEGO sets! :o
Fun looking set, silly name...
Interestingly, this set was also sold in the Netherlands with European markings on box.
The box is quite exclusive with its triangular shape.
The background made me think it was from the Town Jr era, but when I saw that it was from 1996 it made sense. Those trucks are still from the classic town building style era, even if they aren't the most beautiful ones ever made!
So I looked up what the box is like, and it's more like a shallow sloped wedge, lake a cheese part. It also comes with a baseplate with finish line! And with a basic podium with cup! It looks pretty nice from pictures now that there's also space for the referee to stand on the side.
I just love 4 wide vehicles. Wish I had this set!
Should've used the design of Diesel Daredevil (6669) instead of these truck designs.

YES! I'm glad I'm not the only kid who kept reading it as "SYSIEM"! It was years before I learnt that there was "System" and "Technic"
