He's got freaking table saw blades and shiz!
I’ve always felt pity for the Bionicle characters with weapons for hands. Sure, they look cool, but it must be embarrassing for Kohrak to have to ask someone else to assist him with anything that requires any degree of manual dexterity.
I liked these guys. They were cool villains, and the headbutt-attack thing was nifty.
A bit of a personal note, I bought a massive lot of Bohrok a few years ago and one of the Kohrak was missing an eye. Named him "Icesore."
Lore time!
In order to fill his its mission of studying other worlds, the Great Spirit Robot was outfitted with a peculiar camouflage system. The machine would sink itself into a planet's ocean and use Energized Protodermis to generate fake landmasses over exposed body parts (most notably the face, functioning as a mask.) After the GSR had finished studying the planet's civilizations it would awaken the Bohrok Swarm. These Bohrok would emerge from ports on the GSR's face and begin destroying the island and loosen it's foundations. When the Bohrok's work was done the GSR could simply rise, destroying the landmass, and flee the planet.
The Bohrok themselves were slightly more complicated. Created from the remains of dead Av-Matoran, the Bohrok were a swarm of beetle like machines. They were capable of folding their body into a sphere in order to roll across terrain at high speeds, and could jack their heads back and forth with battering-ram like strength. Bohrok lacked the organic components that most MU inhabitants did, sans one organ. The Krana.
Krana were the "brains" of the Bohrok. Purely organic, mask-like, creatures. Krana could latch onto the face of any MU inhabitant in order to link their mind with the rest of the swarm. These Krana served as a direct link to the Bohrok's two queens, the Bahrag, who would give orders to the swarm. Krana came with one of eight powers, and Bohrok (with the help of Bohrok-Va) would often exchange Krana mid-mission to adapt to new threats and obstacles.
For 100,000 years the Bohrok fulfilled their function without fail, up until the Great Cataclysm and the subsequent coming of the Toa.
During the Great Cataclysm, the GRS was deactivated mid-flight and crash-landed on the ocean moon of Aqua Magna. While it's guiding AI, Mata Nui, was completely offline, the camouflage system was accidently triggered. This created a landmass that would eventually be named "Mata Nui" itself. The Matoran inside the GSR's head fled its shattered remains, and settled on the island above.
1,000 years after the Great Cataclysm the Toa Mata arrived on Mata Nui. After a month of trials and tribulations the Toa Mata obtained a full set of Masks of Power, and challenged the dark lord Makuta Teridax to a duel. In the end, Makuta feigned defeat and fled the battle, having seen enough of the Toa's skills. Maktua's grand plan still needed a few months to reach full effect, and he needed a way to keep the Toa occupied, so he crafted a new plan. Makuta unleashed a sonic signal, emulating Mata Nui's own, alerting the Bohrok it was time to leave the planet.
This signal awoke the Bahrag, who had no idea the order was false. The Bohrok swarm was unleashed and began ravaging the land above. By being awakened early, the Bohrok's rampage risked the life and safety of the Matoran who lived there. Believing the Bohrok were monsters, the village elders crafted a plan to defeat the swarm.
The Bahrag's lair was locked by a great gate requiring all eight Krana powers from all six breeds of Bohrok to open. The Toa began roaming the land, fending off Bohrok and prying out their "brains" any chance they could. After a month all 48 Krana had been retrieved, and the Toa descended into the Bahrag's lair.
The Queens were sealed in a Protodermis cage by the Toa Mata, who soon after fell into a pool of Energized Protodermis that transformed them into the Toa Nuva.
Soon after the Bohrok-Kal were awakened. They attempted to reawaken the queens, but failed to do so. During the Kal's mission, the remaining Bohrok on Mata Nui were called back into their nest to prepare for the Queens' reawakening, effectively sealing them underground once more.
Many months later, after the Matoran had returned inside the GSR, the Toa Nuva were given the Scroll of Preparations in order to reawaken Mata Nui. The Toa made amends with the Bahrag and freed them, and the Bohrok fulfilled their goal of the destro

Kohrak were the Bohrok of Ice. They had a cold demeanor, both literally and figuratively, with the frigid temperatures they released driving even other Bohrok away. Kohrak were more focused and robotic toward their mission than others of their kind, ignoring threats until absolutely necessary. While the Swarm as a whole thrived on teamwork, Kohrak preferred to tackle threats one-on-one, making them ineffective compared to other breeds for the war that broke out between them and the Matoran on Mata Nui.
Kohrak were kool! Surprisingly, as a fan of the Ice characters, Kohrak was one of the last Bohrok I ever got, near the end of 2002. But they made a memorable appearance near the beginning of the year when I saw them in the pages of BIONICLE Comic No. 4, part 1 of the Bohrok Saga. After their victory over Makuta, the Toa became aware of the Bohrok menace when Kapura, one of the Ta-Koronan villagers, reached them with news of Ta-Koro under attack by strange creatures called Bohrok.
Once in Ta-Koro, the six Toa beheld squads of Pahrak and Kohrak leveling the outskirts of the village. The Toa boldly leapt into action, but were unprepared for what came next. Lewa found himself one moment in the air, ready to strike--the next moment, he was flash-frozen by an icy blast from a Kohrak. Gravity did the rest, and a timely save by Tahu, the Toa of Fire, spared Lewa from further harm. Only by combining their powers of wind and water did Gali and Lewa finally manage to drive the Kohrak and Pahrak away from Ta-Koro.
In the battle's aftermath, the Toa discovered some Kohrak and Pahrak that "died" left behind strange creatures in their heads. These were Krana, and Turaga Vakama explained how these were the actual creatures in control of the Bohrok, driving them on their mission of destruction to return Mata Nui to as it was in the Before Time--a barren wasteland devoid of all life.
Collecting the Krana was the key to their defeat, and in the weeks that followed, the Toa and Tohunga battled many of the Bohrok, including more Kohrak. Eventually, Kopaka discovered the fissure in the island from whence the Bohrok were emerging, and notified Tahu about this intel. Instead of barging in and destroying the nest, they decided to regroup with the other Toa and together infiltrate the Bohrok realm with their collected Krana.
The battle below was epic, with the Toa discovering both powerful Exo-Toa armor and even more powerful Bahrag, the queens of all the Bohrok. Only by combing their elemental energies into one stream did the Toa manage to defeat the Bahrag, entombing them in a solid protodermis cage. Unable to communicate with the Krana, the Bohrok across Mata Nui, including the Kohrak, fell dormant. Having realized they were not alive, but merely biomechanical creations, the Tohunga went to work "reprogramming" the now-Kranaless Bohrok to repairing all the damage they had done.
-A robot appears from a portal-
"Where am I?"
The name of this guy reminds me of that TOS episode where Kirk couldn’t remember his name…hmm now what was that…
My second Bohrok, after Tahnok. I love the color scheme which uses more white than usual because the teeth are also white. Nd the shields are lne of the cooler ones!
@Lord_Lego_Mayora so the island Mata Nui was like a giant mask for the Great Spririt Mata Nui! I completely forgot about that detail! It's so quintessentially bionicle, I love it!
The GSR reveal continues to be so incredibly cool!
@GSR_MataNui: I have the dumbest question I've been unable to find a clear answer to forever: were the Bohrok-Kal six unique individuals or were they numerous like the regular Bohrok?

Bohrok are living wrecking balls. They generally don’t require manual dexterity.
Besides, they have the Bohrok-Va to deal with that sort of stuff for them

The Bohrok-Kal were six unique individuals. It was only the normal Bohrok like this guy that came in swarm form
Thanks @Brickalili!
The faceshields in the packaging art never really looked anything remotely like what the factory produced in real life, did they?
I have been suuuuuuper on a Bionicle nostalgia kick the last few days, and somewhat missing several of my old childhood sets, so this is... timely!
Unpopular opinion but I always preferred the Bohrok-Kal over the classic Bohrok like these, though. The Bohrok were neat, too, of course; but the Kal had all their strengths, plus three additional things that at the time made me love them far more: cool unique (at the time) powers; sleek main-and-silver colour schemes (before silver became super-overused); and an enticing plot hook in them stealing the Toa Nuva's powers.
It probably helped that I'd only got one Bohrok set (8563) before the Kal were released; so I didn't share the Bohrok build fatigue by 2003 that many other fans had. Nonetheless, I have more fondness for the Kal than the Bohrok-traditional, even to this day.
Back on topic, I remember that Kohrak here and Gahlok, together, were my second and third classic Bohrok when I got them in an eBay lot (along with a second Tahnok that I ended up trading for my friend's Pahrak, since he was losing interest in Bionicle by then) in... 2006, must have been? I may be wrong, I'm a little uncertain of the year; but I'm pretty sure I didn't use eBay before 2006 - and those Bohrok were for sure one of the first things I got through it.
I still have the label/etiquette of this set's canister on our garage door, still going strong after 20 years.
I rebuilt all 12 Bohrok and -Kal some years ago, when sorting my collection. Kohrak has my favourite colour scheme of them all, as 'cliché' as white with cool blue may be for ice/snow themes.
The first years of Bonkles were by far my favourite, when it still had the Technic label on packaging and instruction booklets. The functions they managed to put in these sets are still great fun. Colour swaps or not, Bohrok have a fantastic design.
@GSR_MataNui: "Icesore," I love it.
@MeisterDad: The episode was called, "The Paradise Syndrome."
The Bohrok weren't just the perfect Bionicle, they were the perfect toy.
Good size, affordable price, neat action features, and transformation into a rollable ball, all wrapped into a fun buildable figure that can be remade or combined with fellow figures in the line. There is nothing else that quite matches how great the Bohrok were.
Limited articulation would be the only knock, but the limbs are molded in a way that knees and elbows don't feel necessary and the head strike gimmick largely forgives the lack of a neck.
Bohrok were perfect and you can't convince me otherwise.
@GSR_MataNui:
I made three in Christmas colors with Gali hook tails and called them Yuhlok, Muhzak, and Eghnok:

"How can you have a hand like a scissor, eh? Show me one person who's got a hand like a scissor?"
"Ey, it's a beautiful dream, I'd love to be this man."
"Did you ever think about what you're going to do on the toilet? What are you going to do on the toilet!?!"
These guys were cool, so much functionality. I loved how it could transform into a ball and hang suspended in its canister like a cocoon. And that scissor-hinge head attack was neat, too. So much packed into such a small model.
Due to the "you take three colours, I take three colours," Kohrak was both the last Bohrok I acquired and my first white Bionicle: since I took Tahu, my brother took Kopaka and we were forever going after our respective colours (and secondary colours--I got black and brown) thereafter.
He's also the first Bohrok of my post-Bionicle Dark Age that I've reacquired, because while I hung on to my Toa Mata, the Bohrok were not so fortunate. So I'm presently quite fond of this set as a once-had/lost/reacquired friend, even if it was quite far down the chain when it came to enjoyment at the time--as it was so similar to eleven other sets.
This and Gahlok were some of the first Bionicle sets my sister and I acquired back in 2002. Lehvak came shortly afterward so I could build what I called the "Mega Bionicle" at the time.

You might want to ask Edward Scissorhands that question!
@GSR_MataNui if I recall correctly, the Bohrok were transformed Av-Matoran who ceased to be living individuals once the process was complete. I don’t recall dead Matoran ever being used as spare parts.
