Oof, exposed gears on a vehicle designed for sand? Seems like a bit of an oversight.

@MCLegoboy:
It’s, uh, so the gears can fling the grains of sand far away. Yeah.

This could be the smallest technic set ever made that can be upgraded with power functions

No, see, the gears grind the sand of the dunes into dust. Thus the name.

Dusting a dune is like draining a lake. It would cease to be a dune once it is "dusted."

I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but with some spare parts I had from this era of Technic, the stickers didn't peel so much as they shattered into little sharp bits. It was weird.

I’m not sure I ever even applied the stickers. They seemed pointless and I usually skip nonessential stickers.

I didn’t even know Technic had stickers this far back. Thought that came in with the fancy bodywork panels.

I don’t remember ever building this set but I know I had it from the seat and headlight pieces.

This was probably from that deleted scene from "Spaceballs": "Comb the DESSERT!!!"

By in Turkey,

We had similar sets back in those days. Outdated for sure, but still looks cute.

8842 already had a sticker back in 1986. Maybe there are even older examples, but that's the oldest one I remember.

By in Jersey,

854 and 948 were even earlier, just the one sticker of course but over multiple pieces.

I prefer its alternate name: Hawaiian Beach Racer

By in Netherlands,

Nice set, apart from the juniorized steering rack.

Looks more like a grimacing Koopa Trooper with glasses.

By in United Kingdom,

This was my first Technic set - it was a great entry point, plus it could be motorised with a 9V motor and it fit a Technic figure if you had one from another set. The stickers on mine are absolutely fine - the cracking problem for me is mostly from mid-2000s sets.

The gearing rack piece was great and wish they would still use for small builds rather than just turning a technic connector.

By in Netherlands,

There's something so nostalgic about that late 90s technic style. I never owned a set with the gear rack but yet I know exactly how it feels from when I was over at friends. I remember that I found it cool that you can position the steering wheel up and down.

Oh hey, this set. I had this one, but just never realised that I did.

...by which I mean, I got its parts in a lot somewhere along the line, only without instructions... and that was before I knew about all these useful online resources to find the sources for unique pieces. It was only when I was going through my loose parts collection a while back, in preparation for selling them all on Bricklink, that I was looking into the pieces I had and I realised I had some pieces unique to this set. A more thorough search revealed I had *all* the pieces of this set, so I went ahead and built it in full.

Vehicle technic has never really been to my interest, so I sold it shortly after - albeit as a complete set rather than just individual pieces - but it was cool to find that I had a complete set that I simply hadn't known about!

I also discovered through that process that the same was true of 6813, 6115, 6125 and 6550, too ^^ Albeit without the minifigures anymore in those cases.

I didn't have this one, but I do have a very similar set named Roadster (8832). It looks like they made a lot of buggy/roadster/go-kart type of technic sets during that era. Would love to see an updated version if there hasn't been one already.

By in Netherlands,

I too was thinking of my 8832 indeed, seems very much an updated version of that. Nothing wrong with it, simple but a perfectly fine toy. Though even as a kid back then I had mixed feelings about those steering parts. They worked well for sets like these, but otherwise their use was rather limited and I hardly ever used them in my own contraptions.

By in United States,

On the subject of stickers--I have one of those (the 1x2 stickered tiles)! I always wondered where it came from. I don't own this set, but I've had that tile for years.

Thanks, RSOTD!
