Yet another car from the 90s without a driver. Is this proof for the need of seatbelts in LEGO?

By in United States,

Considering the color scheme, shouldn't that be "Blacktron Race Car?"

It’s not THAT bad so as to be in the crosshairs.

By in Canada,

Ummm...has the driver been arrested???

By in Canada,

Ah, the Blacktron racer-

Wait...

What's with the 4?

Other than the 4, it's perfect.

By in United States,

I think my brother had this small car. I recognize the slope piece of “4” at least. Funny it’s another random self-driving car.

Truth in advertising

The pinnacle of LEGO race car design! Loved these guys and the different numbered slopes made them really collectable.

Well, it’s certainly black. The rest, I’m not willing to commit to.

By in Turkey,

I thought I had this but then realized I have the 2886. Either way, these little guys are very useful with parts and MOCs.

By in Germany,

They don't lie.
It _is_ a race car. And it's indeed black.

By in Australia,

What was with LEGO Town and driver-less cars in the 90s? Must've been a little optimistic about the future

By in United Kingdom,

A car for the ‘black race’? Wow! I forgot how insensitive LEGO was back in the ‘90s :~P

Seriously, LEGO should have thought about the ‘Black Race Car’ name before using it. Even for 1990, it’s clumsy and open to being misconstrued.

I do kinda want to see this car snuck into a lineup of Blacktron I, see how long until someone notices

No. You're just oversensitive.

By in Netherlands,

Where is the white race car! I call fowl! cheep cheep!

In all seriousness, I do love these simple design race cars. Simple, yet effective and for some reason these things roll like crazy.

By in Australia,

I had the opportunity to buy this set, in a random toy-shop in a small town, once ... and I didn't. And I regretted it ever since

Fast forward a few years, and they released 2886. Pounced on that one quickly.

This set was released under 1631 in 1990. And the design is very similar to the race cars in 6381, released as early as 1987, the set in which the 4 x 7 car chassis made its debut. The following years, a lot of very similar race cars released in a number of small sets and in 6395.

These kind of cars are just so cute!
And this one is trying so hard to look dangerous with its blacktron 1 esque livery, it's just so adorable!

@Brickalili: To further the camouflage, sit a Blacktron guy in it. One wouldn't at all look out of place, although I think you'd have to remove either his air tanks or that yellow part no. 2432 to get him to fit.

6648 from 1992 has a Blacktron body, just need to switch the helmet color. It makes sense, given the harness is basically what race drivers wear now.

This set provides social commentary. A car of the black race about to be shot by a policeman. And the car is yellow, the only Lego skin color at the time, as well. Yellow, which represented all real-life races. This could mean many things. That all races should stand in solidarity if any one of them is threatened? That the police state of Lego City imitates life? A reminder that certain yellow minifigures are actually disadvantaged and discriminated against by others, but as humans we have a color-blind viewpoint, a viewpoint which may have positive as well as negative effects?

I bet he just yellowed out...

By in United States,

Compared with the previous driverless car of the week, this one is much better: it doesn't look ten bricks shy of a complete model, but is an example of an excellent, if simple, 90s race car. I have a one of the 4 slope bricks here (or should I say "roof" bricks?) and could probably recreate it, which is a nice fuzzy feeling not always provided by newer sets.

By in United States,

Reminds me of 1563, which I remember having to send away for from Kelloggs. The 80's and early 90's had so many of these tiny 4-wide cars. I have fond memories of 6634 and 6530.

Guessing another set meant to be a kids' allowance money buy.

Not to be confused with 1517, Black *Racing* Car from the year before.
