Now, how does this work?

Give'em what for little man!

I can't remember which number is the box and which the polybag--but I had four of the polybag: the first set I ever bought for army-building purposes, although I didn't--and don't--love the frisbee helm and would have preferred some other weapon to the crossbow.

Ironically, my KK1 soldiers still have a higher crossbow quotient than any other faction...

By in United States,

This set would make for a nice low-level unit in a 'Tower Defense'-style game.

All can be done with some crossbows, a shield, and a roll of duck tape.

By in Canada,

Get a load of that ribald moustache.

“The bolts keep falling out of the crossbows!”

Yes…! My last set before my dark age! Happy to see it!

By in United States,

I miss Castle sets priced with kids in mind.

By in Canada,

Great...although, that NOT a fence...:)

Also: Pirates yesterday, Castle today...Space tomorrow? Western maybe...or back to 'The City'...

By in Germany,

The Minifigure is Richard the Strong. I have No Idea however, why there were so many small Sets for the theme that were all basically the Same...

By in Singapore,

I don't know why I never saw these in stores. The smallest set available on the shelves was 6026. I kinda wanted this and 4806 (incidentally RSotD just over a year ago).

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I think this guy needs a castle or a tower at least, to function properly.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How do you reload such an apparatus? Hell, how do you -fire- such an apparatus given the triggers are now out of reach?

By in Netherlands,

Looking back it's a bit weird but I loved it as a kid.
Weirdness aside quivers, 2 crosbows, a flag and a shield makes a decent armed soldier.

Both this guy and 4807 (boxed version) were sold in a supermarket, I never saw them in any toy store
@Binnekamp that's the polybag version and this is the boxed version, they like messing with us.

Based my Lion Knights of King Leo on the polybag edition 4811 . They were found in a Wal-Mart in California during the after Christmas clearance. Found (and purchased) 20 for $1 each; they never put them out until then.

Today's RSOTD is the boxed version, while 4811 was the polybag.

Few parts, but good parts, even in a time when other year 2000 Castle sets had some very bulky big pieces.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I didn't think the crossbow 'turret' from 6081 King's Mountain Fortress would warrant a set of its own (let alone several) yet here we are...

He's a pacifist archer!

@Brickalili:
Are they? On modern crossbows, the trigger usually looks like a gun’s, with a trigger guard around a curved trigger. You could still reach in and hook that with a finger. It would normally impede your accuracy, but these are mounted to a stand that would hold them steady and allow fine-tuning of the aim. On a medieval crossbow, I believe the trigger was usually a long tongue that laid flat against the stock, which you would engage by squeezing the handle. This should also be accessible when the crossbows are mounted in that configuration, though it may require some awkward poses to fire them simultaneously.

@WizardOfOss:
Incompetence =/= pacifism. Unless you’re suggesting he intentionally sabotaged his weapon station with such a janky design, it’s more likely he is a really terrible inventor, works for a really terrible inventor, or has really incompetent management.

In My (retroactive) HeadCanon, the auto-loading crossbows: here; the one on top of 6080 King's Mountain Fortress; and at the back of 6090 Royal Knight's Castle are dwarven inventions, either purchased by or gifted to those kingdoms.

Since the Crown Knights were the only faction to aid the dwarfs (see 7048 Troll Warship and 852293 Castle Giant Chess Set) in their war against the trolls, dwarfs now only trade with or assist Crown Knights or allies of.

The symbols of the 2013 blue knights tie the different crown and lion factions together.

I think he just wanted a weapon that wouldn't hurt anyone. I mean, just imagine if all wars were fought with non-functioning weapons, how much better would that be!

That said, this was a set from 2000, when Lego was struggling quite a bit. So might as well just have been the result of incompetent management indeed. Poor chap....

Seems likely to lose a finger to that contraption…

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

One finger is just a small sacrifice to stop war....
(Okay, not so small for minifigs that have only two fingers on each hand, but still...)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@PurpleDave

Given that the triggers seem to have ended up built into the stone turret itself, I’m still considering them “out of reach” unless Sir Richard here can dig his fingers through rock!

I was gonna ask this lol, all I know is that these are also in LEGO Worlds so neat callback, I guess.

By in United States,

I remember ordering 5 of these from the shop-at-home catalog. It was my first purchase of multiple copies of something. I am not a fan of the helmets, but I appreciated the different historical styling to add variety versus the older helmets.

By in Netherlands,

Nowadays at least there could be a compact firing version for sir richard to push .

Still , I do think this non-firing part looks a lot more classic and it's nice LEGO did not fully replace every crossbow with shooters, having a mix and option is good.

I mean, a set like 71719 : Zane's Mino Creature has both crossbow variants in use.

The actual "bolt" shooter has not made it past Nexo Knights yet , and was almost exclusively used by Aaron character minifigures.

@Brickalili:
If you assume they’re modern pistol-style triggers, sure, but given the era represented, I would figure triggers that lay back against the stocks, allowing relatively unobstructed access in the gap between them.
