Random set of the day: Air Chase
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6735 Air Chase, released during 2002. It's one of 10 Island Xtreme Stunts sets produced that year. It contains 85 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$10/£7.99.
It's owned by 1,284 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

I have two of these!
I’m guessing they were on sale at KayBee Toys back when it still existed in malls. I picked up a bunch of this one store’s inventory when it would go on super clearance. It was nuts.
A propeller plane being chased by a hang-glider... If it weren't such an Xtreme island, I'd put my money on the bandit in the plane.
I cant see how this would be a successful "chase" for more than ten seconds...
Still hands down one of my favorite themes
@gorf43:
What you can’t see is that the plane is pedal-powered, and the pilot is starting to cramp up.
"Air Chase", probably not "Air Catch".
Island Xtreme Stunts was a pretty neat theme. We had our first skate park, plus nods to Lego Island with the characters.
Chasing something as fast and elusive as air seems very hard.
I thought this was Jack Stone. The glider looks similar to 4612.
I never much liked this set. The airplane has no windscreen, and its propeller is absurdly small. Also, an unpowered hang glider isn't much of a chase vehicle for a powered airplane.
And people wonder why Lego City is such a 'Police State'...it's because the 'Neighborhood Watches' fail. I mean look at this: Crook is in a prop-powered plane, while Duke Detain's second-cousin-twice-removed is on...a hang glider?!?! I mean, if it were based on the G.I. Joe 'Falcon'...:

But then, TLG won't 'arm' the police; imagine the citizenry were to go 'vigilante'...(*shutters*)
85 pieces for $10? The prices of sets are getting absurd. Lego needs to return to the good old days when it wasn’t expensive.
That’s Patrick Warburton in the Soarin’ ride at Disney California Adventure. Maybe he’s chasin’ a rival theme park.
@peterlmorris: Clearances at Kay*Bee... That takes me back, I got quite a good bit of Lego from that.

Right? I think I got nearly the whole old NASA line for a steal! The big Space Shuttle, the somewhat oddly shaped Saturn V and lander, and the ISS were all on clearance there. Plus I definitely remember picking up that small Technic R2-D2. Really helped bulk out my collection early on.
Forget Island Xtreme. It's 2022 and it's all about Dynamic Island now! Apple says so!
@peterlmorris:
Man, all I ever got were about 100 Bohrok Va that each come with three black friction axle-pins that sell for…oh, geez, someone actually bought 80 of them for $8 each.

Sure looks like a solid argument when you cherrypick one of the worst, most juniorized themes of the era.
Also in general it's time for the 10 cent price to part ratio to go. Doesn't account for mass, size, prints, etc. Throw in a couple hundred useless studs and 2 length axles and wow, what an incredible value and low price to part ratio.
I was just about to say I liked the design of the plane, then I saw that it's a sea plane and has a massive black plate underneath ruining the aesthetics.
Ain’t got time for pants when you got some extreme stunts to pull.
@WemWem Honey, where are my paaaants?
Island Xtreme Stunts is one of those themes that I love out of nostalgia but for which I have only a little bit of desire to actually get anything from.
The detail issues mentioned by others in this thread are why. I'm also not that much of a vehicle guy, although 6737, the large Jet-Ski was nice and even had a compartment. And Beach Lookout 6736 wasn't bad either.
As for this being a lopsided 'chase': this theme did it before every theme had some conflict shoehorned in for 'conflict in a box', leading to officers dangling from a space truck from a chain (5972), ATVs vs giant red Pickup trucks (4437) or two rebels vs an AT-ST and Probe Droid (75322). The IXS theme was ahead of its time in that sense!
But not really, because of the story. Island Xtreme Stunts is about an action movie being made. Pepper Roni and friends participate as stunt actors, as does the Brickster. Even though he actually still is evil (gasp!!). So it's up to whoever plays with these whether they're just acting as villains and heroes or not.
Fun fact: the logo is still used every now and then in City as a brand.
One of my most favorite sets of my childhood. I spent countless hours rebuilding the plane, fiddling with the wing angles and just swooshing around. Having a Brickster from Lego Island was also very nice, and Snap Lockitt was the coolest minifig I had.
I wish I had more sets from this theme though.
Not sure what’s crazier; that the dude in the hang glider thinks he can keep pace with a plane or that the dude in the hang gliders actual name is Snap Lockitt…
Speedos and hang-gliding don't usually go together! As for the chase, I'm more worried about whether the plane will make it under the low bridge, but it seems to have wings which can fold back, crazy times.

I loved that set, when it came out. It was such a cool thing to add to my Lego beach setting.
But then, I was a sucker for Xtreme Island. Even in the early 00s, when Lego wasn't exactly hitting it out of the park, this theme was lovely and interesting.
I was just checking the instructions, and I totally forgot the hang glider was powered! This set has two tiny propellers.

Actually, this hang glider has a propeller. It’s behind the red "engine" brick, barely visible on the box art.
I joined the LEGO Club in early 2002, so Island Xtreme Stunts was one of the themes heavily promoted in both the first catalog and the first magazine I received in the mail. Never got any of the sets, but I did think they looked neat.
Since it has an engine, that makes this glider sort of a spiritual successor to 6585, which was one of the first sets I got as part of a value pack: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=4274-2
@Drzhivago138:
6585, 6735…7683?
BTW, you can create links for “-2” (or higher) sets by just adding the “-2” to the end of the set number: 4274-2
Had and loved this set as a kid, still have those sweet printed fishbone angled pieces too!
Also FYI, there is a propeller on the back of the glider too
I just remember loving being able to move the wings back a bit on the plane, this just unlocked some nostalgia. I'm sure I have this set somewhere..in pieces.
give that man some pants

Given that the propellers are the same size, there's a good chance Snap might actually outpace the plane!
@Formendacil:
Well, his aircraft might. Given that he’s only attached by his hands, there’s a good chance Snap will splat.
