Random set of the day: Freeze Ray Frenzy
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 5970 Freeze Ray Frenzy, released during 2009. It's one of 10 Space sets produced that year. It contains 80 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$9.99/£9.99.
It's owned by 5,003 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

But it's already Space. Isn't it cold enough?
Freeze Ray!!
I think we should get Gru in on this set.
Space Police 3 is so darn cool and I own 0 sets from the theme because I was in my dark ages and had no money at that time anyway. Life is pure suffering but LEGO makes it better, sometimes.
Is Freeze Ray the guy who puts out stop signs?
Traffic signs and signals did not advance much in… whatever time this is supposed to be.
Needs a freeze ray to keep the police rocket from blasting away when parked.
You might have a space ship capable of reaching the upper atmosphere in a moment ... but you'll damn well stop at that floating red light sign, mister alien.
@MCLegoboy:
Orange dude is getting ready for his favorite Christmas movie.
Man, that massive freeze ray blasting out of the exhaust looks so cool. The orange color really sells it!
(Disclaimer, I had this set as a kid. I can't remember anything about this "freeze ray" the set name refers to.)
Gotta love those stop signs and traffic signals on the way to the moon....
I remember my brother having about six sets from this theme. Four from the first wave(this set being one) and two from the second wave. Frenzy and his green brother as well as the skull twins are perfect for Star Wars minifigs. And of course, this theme introduced us to the legendary minifig that is "Brick Daddy".
It's also fun to see dated building techniques. Their offset stud seating build for Frenzy is obsolete due to the new pieces released.
When LEGO and the dialogue from Batman and Robin (1997) collide.
Quick lore!
City on the moon!
Biker gang! Black Hole Gang!
Police chase! Speeding ticket!

Meanwhile, George Jetson is "driving" waaaaaay over the speed-limit, and eradically...and the S.P. are doing ZILTCH!!! (:D)
@GSR_MataNui:
We're whalers on the moon,
We carry a harpoon.
But there ain't no whales
So we tell tall tales
And sing our whaling tune.
I'm not saying the bad guys are Blacktron 3...
But Space Police 1 had Blacktron 1...
And Space Police 2 had Blacktron 2...
One of the best themes. I didn’t get all the sets, but I’m pretty sure I got enough updated helmets to bring the first wave up to the standards of the second.
But let me tell you, one of the best large spaceships ever, hands down.

Me: “haha that nickname…. Wait it’s actually named that in the Brickset database?”

I'm pretty sure Brick Daddy was named on the box!

Well, Rench, the green-skinned version of this set's bad guy, has the Blacktron 2 logo on his torso, so...
Been on a bit of a Space Police nostalgia kick lately, and then this shows up as random set of the day. Neat coincidence!
@Robot99 I believe that the name is a reference to the fact that in-universe they use non-lethal freeze ray weapons.

Must be the Blacktron Order, who rose up from the ashes of the old Blacktron in the Unknown Regions. Little did the Space Police know the strings were being pulled by the late emperor of Blacktron II himself from the very beginning, only to be revealed in a galaxy wide broadcast.

The iceman cometh.
What killed the dinosaurs? The Ice Age!
Allow me to break the ice.
Alright everyone, chill.
This being the most I've ever paid attention to this set, I just realized the police space cycle-thing is built on a backward old tricycle frame. Looks uncomfortable for the flier.
Maybe the "freeze ray" is the green cone on the black cycle, in the function of an ion cannon or cruise disruptor.
There were no Batman sets released in 2009, so no names to mix-up that would've fit in a Space Police theme.
Kranxx is Orange, Rench is Green (that's for my fellow Transformers fans...)
@PhantomBricks Brick Daddy is amazing! I'd pretty much tuned out Space Police III as a theme, it just didn't do it for me. But then I saw the Lunar Limo. One of my all-time favorite sets with one of my all-time favorite figs. Purple pinstripes and matching fedora on a glow-in-the-dark head, so great!
I miss LEGO Space. The Star Wars sets just aren't the same, and I'm too young to appreciate all the Classic Space throwbacks.
@560heliport:
Rench’s torso print is also based on the proper Blacktron torso.
I really like this set.
@PurpleDave:
It sure is. Yeesh, can't believe I didn't notice that!
This set title always bugged me because one of the aliens is named Frenzy but it's not this one... it's the four-armed one in 5971. This one is Kranxx.
No way this theme will fly today.
I'm so sad that it has fallen into my dark age.
The eponymous freeze ray does look kind of tacked on to the bad guy ship there…but I suppose if he’s nicked it and hastily bolted it on then that’s exactly how it would look so yay accuracy

Same here. The Classic Space nostalgic sets are aimed at the generation that preceded me, which is fine, it just doesn't get me at all. Now if they did a throwback set to this Space Police line, Alien Conquest, and/or Galaxy Squad, I'd be first in line.
Anyways, I remember having this set and being fascinated with the choice to make the bad guy's seat be those diagonal 2 studs with tiles interspersed (having a hard time describing it but hopefully you all can see which area I'm talking about) instead of just a normal 2x2 stud surface. Like, why?

Thoughts on the City Space line? I think there’s some pretty fantastic stuff coming out in those sets that kinda goes under the radar because of the City branding.

Somehow, he returned!
*Wipes away tears, goes put Andor on*
Sorry, what were we talking about?
Space Police 3 was the coolest stuff for a long time, but right in my dark ages unfortunately. I really want TLG to give us something new fantasy space theme that isn't Disney owned.
It probably could if there were "humans" and aliens on both sides.
I completely missed out on Space Police, but it looks cool, especially those minifigs. Wish we had a new Space theme.
Cool alternative use of the bike frame and container, although main vehicle looks a bit fragile in the middle. Together with 5969 8399, 8400 we could have a great advent calendar of mini-figures and small vehicle builds.
Ah YES! SPACE POLICE III!
One of the few themes that I (nearly) 100%-ed (only missing 6980 Squidman's Pitstop, a limited edition set). The sets are all so cool and work so well with each other :D
The SPIII sets make for a great dystopian oppressive regime force. Or regular police. Or a regular policeman's story of finding out he's in an oppressive regime.
This one has arguably the best space chopper build!
I always thought the 'freeze ray' is the Space Police's main weapon. It can freeze a person harmlessly. Or if launched as a missle or from a large cannon it can instantly shut down an engine.
I figured it was like that because of the giant fricking emgine flame that can be removed. A freeze ray weapon would do that.
And it would be funny if they shout 'freeze!' before literally freezing someone.
Oh by the way, the bike actually fits in the container of 5972 Container Heist if you remove the police gun. It neatly fits on top of the platform that can raise it up if the doors open. A driver has to stand beside it when the container is closed, though.
@ambr the main vehicle is actually pretty sturdy. There's a technic axle in there.
@Vladtheb the City Space line is getting better. But it's very constrained by being CITY. Personally I love modular ships, vehicles carying vehicles, combining sub-sections (think 6974 Galactic Enforcer of SPIII as an example) etc. That's not really done in City Space because the sets have to be semi-realistic. The shoe-horning into City, Ninjago, MK or Friends is limiting the creative possibilities because it always has to stay in the template of those themes.
That said, they can be pretty neat, especially the 2019 wave.
this part https://brickset.com/parts/4234006 used for trikes as a base for the cop is seen on here
One of the first sets I ever owned, but I would not have remembered it looked like that in it's completed form
@JasonBall34:
There’s an engine that’s three studs wide and has a notch top and bottom in the center. They used that and put the minifig in the upper notch, so to center him they had to stagger a pair of jumper plates. Because apparently making the long-jumper that early was too much trouble.
Goofy optics on the Space Police line

Well, it perfectly managed without those parts in this case. That's why.
Back in 2009 new parts focussed on doing things other parts just couldn't do. Now we see parts that are on their own a bit more efficient than what one or two parts used to do together. As a result the given parts in sets can get very... specific.
Personally I like olders sets because they made amazing builds despite not having a handy modified part for every scenario yet, but that's just me.
Of all the subthemes of the last 30 years, this might be the one I most wanted to play with—and that includes plenty of things that debuted when I was a child. It's a rotten shame these had to come out when I was well into adulthood. Oh, I bought and enjoyed most of them then, but they would have been centerpieces when I was little. Every single one of them. Endless hours of play value.
Beautiful as Space Police I was, it never seemed to "fit" in the line-up of factions. The cohesive uniforms and color schemes of its contemporary subthemes seemed to indicate that M-Tron, Blacktron, Futuron, etc. were agencies of different interstellar governments. They would be expected to engage one another directly, not via a police intermediary. But Space Police III was dealing with civilians—and such fantastic alien civilians too. It was everything I was missing with my (otherwise fantastic) childhood space collection. I filled that hole as best I could back then, but Space Police III would have been better.
@Binnekamp:
Not really. Kranxx has a diagonal 1.5 stud connection. There’s a solid connection on one ankle, and a tenuous one on the opposite cheek. This made it really easy to knock him out of his seat by accident.
My first Space Police (iii) set, and I remain quite fond of it. There's SOMETHING--and I don't know what exactly--missing from it as an overall Space theme: maybe something 80s/90s, or explorationish, or civilian... I dunno.
But the designs of the sets are fantastic. The crooks are among LEGO's best work ever, including our friend Krankx here. And while the titular Space Police are not quite as exciting next to the criminals, they still have some solid ships.
You don't need Star Wars to have speeder bikes! Sort of a shame they didn't figure out something to do with the axles sticking out of the cop's.
I absolutely loved this line of sets. The mix up of space and city vehicles is still cool after all these years. The alien figs were just awesome. The Raid VPR is quite possibly my favorite $10 set of all time. I’ve made roughly 10 Different versions of this set in so many colors.
This RSOTD helped spurn building ideas for trike elements that were missing the handlebars too!
Wow, nostalgia hit right there. I collected a good batch of the SP3 sets back in the day and this was one of my first.
Kranxx is still my favorite alien from the whole range.
I armed with one of those old-school revolver pieces at some point and he's hung on to it ever since. Something about a tentacle-headed dude riding a literal jet engine while slinging a regular six-shooter is just magic.
