Random set of the day: Paravane
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1749 Paravane, released during 1996. It's one of 7 Aquazone sets produced that year. It contains 16 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$2.
It's owned by 2,292 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Is Aquazone based someplace off the coast of France or something? I'm asking because "Paravane" sounds awfully like French to me!
Also, CHROME!
Let's equip this with some weaponry!
:Proceeds to find the smallest knives and put them where they can do little damage, and then orients the blade so the cutting edge is facing inward:
Let's see the Aquasharks get the better of me!
:Instantly dies:
Wow, only two dollars? And this was a boxed set, too. (Although there was a polybag version.)
par·a·vane
/'per??van/
noun
a device towed behind a boat at a depth regulated by its vanes or planes, so that the cable to which it is attached can cut the moorings of submerged mines.
WHY DOES THIS HAVE A SEAT?!!
Interesting color choices for this theme...
12.5% of the pieces in this set are chrome! How awesome is that?
Oh, but it's so cute and little. And you got (a) that cool printed yellow tile, and (b) another Aquazone figure.
I loved that first wave of Aquazone. Honestly. Was there anything better, in the mid-90s? I think not.

Aquazone.
Best. Theme. Ever.
@legodachi:
Well...then by literal 'definition', this isn't a 'Paravane'; any more than a drone with a seat for a pilot is 'a drone' (at least when being directly piloted)...also, shouldn't the 'knives' be facing pointed out toward the sides, not facing the front...
@legodachi:
I guess that means the knife blades are supposed to face inward, to cut the mine cables. I’m still going to concur with @MCLegoboy on the “:Instantly dies:” angle.
@brick_r:
By facing them inwards, you can make the leading edge pointed so all the cables slide left or right as you hit them, and they can then be forced against the edges of the blades. Face them out and anything you hit with the center slides down as you head away from the mooring, until it eventually hits you from above and probably does angry things. And if it does hit the blade, it’ll just slide off it with minimal damage. Of course, this design might then explain why there’s a cushiony Aquanaut protecting the paravane from being damaged when the mine blows up.
Aquazone, the remains of the unreleased Space subtheme Seatron.
That is a cool printed tile. I want some!
Pretty sure this is the UK version of 1806, nice to see some representation!
The orientation of the knives is entirely up to you. The box picture is not some official guide to a Star Wars vehicle or something XD
If we really need an explanation I'd say they're there just for being carried around. The Aquanaut's diving helmet could carry them, but this way the diver is a bit lighter. It'd make it as scout of sorts. There, happy now?
Sets like these were always great. You get to sample a theme with a complete if dinky vehicle. Many themes I've only got around to the smaller sets, but that way I could still at least own some of it. This stuff's important as it might be a kid's first lego experience!
The best thing about it? It's NOT 6100 !
This thread has me trying to picture what an Aquasharks sea mine would look like...
@Ridgeheart : I had one of the old chrome lightsabers where the chrome around the handle had flaked off, so I clipped the end that was bigger around off and glued it into another lightsaber to make a longer, custom one.
Ah, this little guy - the first (and only complete) Aquazone set I owned! I... I remember one of the charity shops in the town just a little down the road from us one day randomly had a whole bunch of these, still MISB and everything, even though it was like seven years later? I'm sure there must be a story behind that, but I've no idea what it might have been. In any case, naturally, I grabbed one for myself, and I may have got a second one for a friend, too? It was just cool to me that an old set would show up so unexpectedly, and equally cool to get a little taste of the theme that I'd otherwise missed.

Well, the Aquanauts leader is called 'Jock Clouseau', so maybe you're right about that...
Anyways most sources seem to indicate, that the world of Aquazone is actually not on Earth at all. This was probably a remnant of their origin as the cancelled Space-Subtheme 'Seatron'. Later sources even placed it directly in the core of Armeron/Holox, the planet, that the Insectoids are operating on.
I also really liked this guy's face, the futuristic 'sunglasses' look kind of cool. And the yellow base color makes them look like they are an early appearance of teal, despite them being actually normal green.
@TheOtherMike:
I make Darth Maul’s using a standard lightsaber hilt and a telescope. It works in light-bley, black, and I think pearl-gold, but not chrome. The important thing is he can hold it in a 2-handed grip.
Beautiful little set! Granted, they aren't all polybags--but mine was, and I believe it was the first polybag I ever owned. Something magical about tiny little LEGO sets in plastic bags.
The lack of propulsion on this guy next to my only other Aquanaut set (Sea Sprint 9), always made him 2, the wingman, but he was a cool dude.

Propulsion is provided by the towing vehicle (see definition of paravane)
@PurpleDave: I wasn't trying to make Mauls, it was inspired by Kyle Katarn's in Jedi Outcast.
@Ridgeheart: I only modify pieces if I have enough to be sure I won't miss the unmodified ones, or if I have spares.

Yes, but that's my point: the guy in the airplane is always cooler than the guy in the glider: one has control of his flight, the other is more dependent.
Yellow and black. But got it mixed up a bit.
Still.....
