Strange... LOTR is coming back, and this pops up.

Very strange.

By in United States,

As a Star Wars fan... I wish our Battle Packs were more like this. I get that it's $30, but we just had a $30 army builder, and I'd argue that all anyone really cared about it for were the figs, the BARC Speeder was too big, and the AT-RT was rough. Look at this wall and big war crossbow thing! Wonderful stuff.

By in United States,

Oh, how I regret not getting this one. Not just to extend 9474, but to get Eomer. And that Uruk-Hai ballista is pretty sweet, too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

In '16, I finally got around to putting this set together along with 9474. I was pleased how it all looked, but was left wanting more of the long battlement wall and figs. It was still possible to grab this set new under $40, used at cost, and without figs for $20. 5 of these really flesh-out the scene. Great design to allow for scale with multiple purchases.

Hah! I was just commenting on an article about moves that sucked compared to the books they were based on, and someone asked if there were books that sucked compared to the movies that were based on them. I responded with just "LotR."

I think that the books and films have very different and largely medium-specific virtues, and comparing them is pretty pointless. They're two different artists' similar but distinct approaches to the same story. I think the books have a thematic weight that the films don't- not that the movies don't have well-developed themes, the books are just richer in that regard. Also, Tom Bombadil.

By in United States,

The movies are ok. The books are all time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

the new LoTR series is starting to come out and they do this. Coincidence? I think not!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Loved how you could combine multiple copies of this set with Helms Deep

I applaud your bravery.

@PurpleDave:
I have introduced several friends to the lotr films and almost every issue/criticism anyone had concerning the films were changes/introductions essentially absent from the books

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Six minifigs, accessories and a horse. Like this set a lot!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really hope we get some new minifig sets this year. I’m not feeling the Brickheadz.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This set is (so far) the only thing I've ever bought from a craigslist seller.

@Mr__Thrawn:
Tom Bombadil and battle scenes that took place “off page” were two of my biggest issues with the original books.

I may have to agree partially, although it is primarily because books don’t have a soundtrack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't listen to hearsay on upcoming themes or sets. Actually, more specifically I listen to LEGO or Brickset for my news.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was a set that I desperately wanted. For some reason I remember it being $40, but I guess even at $30 it was too much for me. I actually built it a couple years after using Lego's database. I hope they do sets like this again.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It was €40 here so I never bought more than one.
@PurpleDave The movie had plenty of “off sceen” battle and other weird moves.
Not to mention the unneeded late lighting of the beacons for dramatic purposes and that stupid suicide attack led by faramir.
Pippin song was nice BTW

I happened to have enough extra parts after finding helms deep in a bulk lot that I added about 5 wall sections as well as a small cliff on the other side. It does look better than with just the 1 expansion.

By in Turkey,

Very nice set of figures. This is one of those sets that you have to get more than one to truly enjoy the moment...

Do you mean the new sets? “Series” made me think Rings of Power, which has-regrettably-been out for a while.

@watcher21:
Oh, the movies aren't perfect. I prefer the middle chapter to the other two (Rohan is just so much cooler than Gondor), but besides Legolas going shield-surfing, it has the "Chariots of Fire" scene with the torch-bearer running towards the culvert. On the whole, though, all three are very good films (especially if you watch the extended cuts). But we got to actually see the battle at Amon Hen, and again at Helm's Deep, which are two battles I'm pretty sure you skip straight to the aftermath.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Good times.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now this, THIS, is the best battle pack!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Should have bought 50 of these!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I bought this back in 2012 and never got around to opening it or building it until 2019. I am unhappy to report that upon immediate construction, some of the brown parts in the grapple hook cart started to show cracks, particularly the brown 2x2 round plates that cover each of the wheels. I did not let this deter my enjoyment of the set, since I figured those parts were easily replaceable. Indeed, last year I used LEGO's customer support to send me 5 new brown round plates. Sadly, one of the Uruk-Hai minifigure arms is now loose due to cracking, but it isn't very noticeable. This makes me very scared to assemble other LotR sets with higher concentrations of brown like Shelob's Lair or the Orc Forge.

I have Helm's Deep now, so while I have disassembled the Uruk cart, I have kept the wall section built so that I may attach it to the Hornburg. Even alone, the wall section is great. Greed mainly says I should've bought more of them, but you can't deny a longer wall would make the sets look even more epic together!

Gravatar
By in United States,

A local shop priced these at $19.99 new, and I could not help buying all of them.

I'd call it a good omen from the Oracle Of Huwbot.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I loved that this and Helm’s Deep gave us a return to the modular nature of old castle sets. Though admittedly I’ve never tested how odd either would look connected up to much more simple castles of bygone times…

Be careful staring too long into the Palantir of Huwbot! They're not all accounted for....

Gravatar
By in France,

I am glad I was able to get one at the time to go with my Helm's Deep. I wish Lego could come up with LOTR battlepacks instead of these ugly BrickHeadz...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I sold mine on eBay a few months ago for $100USD used without the box.
This set is worth a good amount these days.

I agree! One of very few sets (excluding CMFs) that I have bought in duplicate. I combined the wall sections for extra height.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This was a great set and the idea that you could get multiples and extend the wall was a good one, however it was expensive when it came out so I think I just got the one set.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I wish I bought this one. This is just a really good and well-balanced castle-like set.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Best. Battlepack. Ever.

I only bought two, but I felt that gave me a large enough army for either side, combined with Helm's Deep. I only added one of the wall sections, but I felt that was enough. It's not *that* long in the film.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

This came out in my darkages. I just looked at all lotr set from 2012 and I think this was a perfect wave of lego sets based on a specific franchise. I would like to get all of them if they were sold now for normal prices. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we'll have to wait for a big lego business break down to get such good value sets in the future. Cuz right now lego seems to go for 'less is more, except the price' policy.
And to add to the discussion about films vs books. I was a big Tolkien nerd in my teenage years, I've read almost everything he wrote, like Silmarilion and other obscure books. And when I went to the cinema to watch the first lotr movie I was in shock. It was the first time to me that a movie looked better than my imagination. That's an absolute masterpiece of movie adaptation for me.

... for you might find a mountain cave filled with Clikits, with Huwbot sitting on top saying "my precioussssss".

@LuvsLEGO_Cool_J: I'm the same way. I'm subscribed to just2good and SpitBrix on YouTube, but I usually ignore their "New Set!" videos.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I had one of these sets from back in the day, but just last year my brother in law gave me his old bucket if legos and I found another one of these with all the minifigures, only missing a couple pieces. I got the bucket completely for free too. Not only that but I pulled a complete helms feel from it too but for todays purposes this is the set that matters

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I have one of these, and it's not enough. I would prefer at least two more, but honestly, I wish they were all generic soldiers. Eomer is great, but I only need one...

Would buy this diorama immediately!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I count myself very fortunate to have this set. The Eomer and Rohan soldier minifigs are amazing. Hoping the new LOTR set this year lives up to the legacy of this theme!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah, the start of the theme that brought me back to Lego. This is Lego basics perfection.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Rumble_Strike:
On its own, it wasn’t that expensive. If you were trying to collect the entire theme at the same time, that was a different story.

@J0rgen:
It took a while, but I found one reference that gives a length to the Deeping Wall (most just regurgitate the same height/thickness numbers). This is specifically referring to LotRO, and I can’t find any mention of whether this is based on the films, but I would think so, given the timing involved. It’s supposed to be about 200’ long, which should translate to ~200 studs. Of course, the Helm’s Deep fortress isn’t nearly large enough to be in scale with a wall that big. It looks like the main Helm’s Deep set gives you about 16 studs with the culvert, and this adds 16 studs per copy. I’d probably go with four being the minimum for a decent Helm’s Deep. That’s 80 studs, or about 40% of the full Deeping Wall, while also staying more in scale with the dinky Helm’s Deep fortress.

@dimc:
Right? I don’t see how anyone can claim this is the “perfect” or “best” Battle Pack (I mean, we all know that’s 7595), when it contains a single named character. Better to have put Eomer in the Helm’s Deep fortress with his uncle, and slipped a generic Rohirrim soldier into this, so you could actually build him an army to lead. I mean, there isn’t any other member of his army in any set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So sad..I remember when this came out and as much as I loved army building I couldn't justify multiples of this set. Now fast forward a decade and I long for having that time back to buy more of this. I would have shifted my LEGO budget to pick this stuff up instead of some of those Star Wars or Superhero sets that I don't love at this time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the best LEGO sets I ever got!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmmm…. Looking over pictures of the Deeping Wall, there’s supposed to be some sort of turrety thing projecting out of the wall near the main fortress. The rest of the wall should be fairly smooth, and curved. The main fortress set comes with a smooth wall with the culvert, and this one has a little jog. I think this is supposed to represent the large turret, which means you’d have to redesign it or come up with something original to fill out the rest of the wall.

I believe you meant 6103...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@dimc:
What? Only two of them are Green, and one of them only partly at that. One of the others isn’t even an Army Man. Do they have a tank that rolls with treads that don’t? Do they have a paratrooper with a 100% legit LEGO camouflaged parachute that actually works? Do they have a Minesweeper who’s being hauled around on a stretcher because his feet broke when some kid stepped on him at a birthday party? Okay, maybe that last one isn’t anything worth bragging about, but TANK! And parachute!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember drafting copies of this set at Brick Fair Virginia one year! Anyone else here on Brickset participate in this same draft?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

LotR movies are great.

LotR books are also great.

BUT!

Neither have Blacktron, so how great can they really be?

This set made me happy. The bad guys actually outnumbered the good guys, like the did in both book and movie. I'm happy to have gotten one when it was out. Would have been nice to get a couple more, but I don't regret not doing it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was the first LEGO set I bought as a married man. The LotR/Hobbit years were, alas (note my username is Quenya!) belt-tightening years, but I was glad to get a copy of this one: a truly excellent battle pack.
