Review: 40638 Heart Ornament

Posted by ,

While standing in line on January 1 at my local LEGO store, 40638 Heart Ornament caught my eye. I was hoping to find some seasonal builds, but hadn't seen this one before.

It was the perfect impulse buy price at $12.99, so I picked up.

Summary

40638 Heart Ornament, 254 pieces.
£10.99 / $12.99 / €12.99 | 4.3p/5.1c/5.1c per piece.

A very pretty little build with lots of useful pieces

  • Plenty of appropriate pieces for decorating your heart
  • None

Inside the box are three numbered bags. The contents of the first bag make the base of the heart, which is quite sturdy and put together with hinge pieces. The final heart shape is quite effective. There aren't any particularly rare pieces included, though there are a number of 1x2 hinge plates in red.

The contents of the remaining bags are for the decorations of the heart.

The decorations are quite detailed, there are several layers which adds to the effectiveness of the build.

There are more decorative pieces provided than what's needed for the main build, emphasising blue, green, and lilac colours, and some alternate orange colours for the centres of the flowers.

Two other alternative builds are shown in the instruction book, but with this being LEGO, I created my own version using most of the extra pieces to the alternative build.

This is the one of the others shown in the book.

Overall thoughts

My copy of 40426 Christmas Wreath currently hangs on my LEGO room door. I think this is a perfect successor, and hope that LEGO continues other similarly themed ornaments throughout the year.

Thanks to Huw for some of the photos.

What a lovely Valentine’s gift this’ll make!

Getting this for my wife on Valentine's Day. It's almost perfect.

For those of you wondering "Why isn't it perfect?" I would have to say that my wife normally doesn't think of ABS as a suitable material for a gift. :-)

2 would make a nice cloud shape and 3 or 4 a clover shape too

By in Poland,

It could work well as a frame for a photo of a couple in love. I might try that!

Already got mine. It will replace my xmas wreath as well for this time of year.

Oooh that's pretty.
I have been trying to make a heart shape for a Friend's display (cos it is Heartlake City) and nothing ever looks right.
This could be very useful indeed.

I will have to get one for my daughter's heart transplant anniversary on June 24th.

By in Netherlands,

Love those small sets, mainly as parts packs, and there are some interesting pieces here like corner plates, multiple hinges, those heart plates/tiles and flower/treestump things (6050927: PLATE 2X2,2/3 W/KRYDSHUL& CROWN LEAF) .

And then just a nice quantity of those leaf and flower bits in different colors.

With Xtra theme discontinued, sets like these, and the VIP pack polybags etc still offer alternatives.

That is quite nice, but I'm sure in my day "impulse buys" were less than a fiver - I must be getting old :D

Quite good for parts too...

$5 the year I was born tracks to slightly more than this, so yeah, what's up fellow oldy?

I might try to get this and trim a photo to fit into it. Either a little background plate or two, or make it perfectly shaped and tuck it between the layers.

By in Germany,

My wife would divorce me if I got her LEGO for Valentine's Day - or for any other occasion ;-)
