Review: 60394 ATV and Otter Habitat
Posted by CapnRex101,
LEGO has introduced an incredible selection of new animals recently, including some adorable additions from LEGO City. 60394 ATV and Otter Habitat expands the menagerie and I think the otters look superb, naturally drawing attention to this affordable set.
Also, the accompanying park ranger features a new torso and this set could perhaps supplement the newly-revealed 21338 A-Frame Cabin.
Summary
60394 ATV and Otter Habitat, 90 pieces.
£8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99 | 10.0p/11.1c/11.1c per piece.

Given its modest price, unique minifigure and the otters, this is an enjoyable set
- Two superb otters
- Detailed habitat
- Odd ATV proportions
Minifigure
Rather than revisiting the Wildlife Rescue minifigures introduced a couple of years ago, this set instead contains an exclusive park ranger. Sand green was a suitable choice for her torso colour and I like the metallic gold badge, displaying a tree symbol. Additionally, I am glad this torso was designed as gender-neutral.
Dark green legs complement the torso and this reddish brown hair element looks reasonable as well, although producing the dual-moulded cap in dark green would have been even better. This minifigure also includes a nice double-sided head, with some freckles and an alternative winking expression.
I think dark green would have been more appropriate for the helmet too, although this part looks good in every colour, including this bright green shade. A couple of accessories are supplied for the ranger, between a walkie-talkie, a camera and a fish to feed the otters.
The Completed Model
Quad bikes are extremely common across LEGO City, rarely differing significantly in design. The proportions of this model seem unusual though, with an elongated wheelbase to accommodate extra details around the driver. The printed dashboard looks perfect, but I dislike the minifigure's standing position on such a large ATV.
However, the vehicle does include appropriate balloon tyres and storage for both accessories on the back. The inclusion of green mudguard elements is interesting as well, as these have never actually appeared in green before, which surprised me. Unfortunately, these mudguards conflict with the bright green plate underneath, although that colour does match the driver's helmet.
The titular otter habitat is much more appealing, fortunately. This peaceful scene looks beautiful and includes satisfying detail, despite its relatively simple construction. The blending of dark and light bluish grey elements is particularly effective and even the repeated use of 2x2 slopes does not bother me. Moreover, I like the flower and frog beside these rocks.
75966 Hogwarts Room of Requirement introduced trans-light blue otter and hare elements, both representing Patronuses. The hare was produced in a realistic colour last year and the otter has now experienced the same treatment. The reddish brown colour appears perfect and I like the printed eyes and nose, matching the style of the squirrels developed in 2022.
While the otters' environment looks great from the front, the back is rather underwhelming. The exposed black brick is certainly disappointing, while the tree would also benefit from some extra foliage, similar to the design from 60326 Picnic in the Park. Nevertheless, I understand focusing attention on one side, considering the inexpensive price.
Overall
60394 ATV and Otter Habitat inevitably stands out because of the otters, which are otherwise only found in 21338 A-Frame Cabin. They are delightful and I appreciate their availability in a set costing £8.99, $9.99 or €9.99. Furthermore, the otters' idyllic habitat is deserving of praise, while the unique park ranger minifigure is also welcome.
The ATV, on the other hand, could be improved. Perhaps shortening the wheelbase or changing the minifigure's driving position would be effective. Despite this minor weakness, I am impressed with the broader set and the otters are very tempting, of course!

Let's hope these little furballs appear in many otter sets.
who cares about odd ATV when you get 2 Otters :P
Nice set and price, might be hard to get if people buy for the otters and more ATV's + mini figure.
I actually think the standing position on the ATV is an improvement for play. Sitting a minifigure while holding the handlebar is quite tricky - this should make it easier to get her into a driving position.
The ATV proportions also seem to suit the heavy duty vehicles I've seen Park rangers riding.
All in all a very nice set.
Nice review. Awesome set for $10. BUT. I will never accept the term "quad bike," even if it's the popular nomenclature, because it is an absolute contradiction in terms!
Of course, LEGO of Europe chose THIS set to be their 10 buck D2C ! Means no discount for the umptieth, ugly, odd, useless ATV!
For kids to play the ATV is ok!
This is one of the few city sets that I might pick up! I love how they have been adding extra foliage recently. The otters have a very nice sculpt as well. I do find it weird that the ranger when wearing the helmet has 3 greens, but I guess they wanted to avoid recolors.

Quike?
I otter pick this one up.
Ah yes, as some have called it: the Otter Battle Pack.
Can't go wrong with this one to accompany the Tree House and/or the A-Frame Cabin IMO.
What can I say? It had me at "two superb otters".

Sounds like an Australian curse word! :) With all respect to our friends in Australia.
As someone who rode Quads/ATV's for work for nearly two decades, I'd say the standing up position is somewhat realistic in a lot of conditions, especially near or in mud/water.
As for the balloon tires, quad tires are usually a bit wider, but with a smaller circumference than the ones on cars, so I don't know.
That said, I still believe the best options for quads with realistic proportions for minifigures was using the old trike mold, such in this shameless self-promotion of a MOC from 2006: https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=208818
But yeah, this set is all about the otters. Can we get a beaver now?
This set is OTTERly amazing! I really like that the quad is in my favorite color, too!
Having the back be undecorated is actually a plus if you want to combine two habitats. Considering that this is basically an otter battle pack, I'm sure many will be collecting multiples.
Wait! AND a frog?!?!

I have seen it is a grocery store in Norway at least..
I hope we get more set like this, fantastic job from the City theme designers lately when it comes to animal moulds :D

Those were my first thoughts exactly. It'll probably be the best selling 10 EU/USD set of the year due to the otters or rewarded as one of the best LEGO sets under 40 USD by Brickset.

It's not shown on the physical catalogue for Italy either, same as last years Picnic in the Park =( Guess I know what will go on the LEGO.com cart next time I have to order something not reaching the free shipping/GWP threshold, but the fact they chose exactly this set irks me so much =D
One of the first set I bought in 2023. It was in the lot I got to get the 40580 - along with a few other sets of course.
There are only 451 persons (still more than for 76210 or 76215 - almost more than both combined!) so far owning this (I know it is fairly early in the year and we are just after the holiday spending). I just hope that if people buy sets with animals, Lego will get the hint and produce more (not just for CMFs). We still need the foxes, raccoons and I would like to see the skunk and flamingo come back. There are of course a lot more but if we get 2-4 per year (and Lego does not stop producing them because of broken mould) then we could get something interesting in the long run.
This brings another point I realised upon reading the comments for the A-Frame Cabin. It seems that many/most people who have a Lego City at their place, do not have a forest or wild area in it - its all fully developed urban sprawling (of course real estate is at a premium and all the wilderness/wildlife has been displaced). I am way far from being a tree huger but It would be nice to see more wildlife segments at the edges of Lego cities - maybe just campgrounds with a few animals around.
"Quad Bike" is just short for "Quadratic Bichael" you know.
This looks like a neat little set! I like the ATV a lot, a pretty simple but cool design, and the otters are cute too. Maybe I'll grab one after I run errands this weekend or something.
That park ranger minifig is AWESOME. As if the Otter Battle Pack needed additional incentives to help it sell.
A winner, in the mold of the 60326.

I’ve missed a lot of those comments, but I sympathize. My Lego city used to be a lot less developed, but one modular a year (plus Ninjago city and MOCs) adds up over time!
My biggest project ever is a national park area with a train tunnel through a mountain with various natural areas (wooded, volcanic, and snowy with skiing) built atop it, so fortunately I will always have some reserved natural space in my city. I recently had the opportunity to expand the area around it to be more wooded, which has given 10305 a home in a sort of medieval forest. Having done so, the forest area really does add something different and beautiful to the city layout, and I definitely think it’s worth reserving space for… even amid every-growing sprawl. After all, I want my city to be a utopian reflection of what I wish the real world was like, rather than what it is (:
Like you, the otter battle pack was one of my first purchases this year, and fortunately the otters have plenty of choices to live in my city :) There’s always the option of sea otters, too, as in central California!

I just need to say that your MOC is incredible! I’m truly impressed at how it takes the fairly unrealistic-looking trike pieces and turns them into incredibly realistic quads. I salute you! I hope you don’t mind if I use this for all my old trike pieces now, haha
That said, I agree with you that the quad in this set looks fairly realistic to me. I actually like the size, standing position, and stripes of several colors, but I also totally respect the Capn’s opinions too.
I’m also here for some LEGO beavers… hopefully someday soon!
ALL 9,99 sets this year are A M A Z I N G.
I am so happy Lego learned kids and adults love animals and plants.

The comments were to the effect that most people liked the A-Frame cabin but they had no places to put it into their layout. Of course, you need a wild area to put it in. An A-Frame cabin next to the Ninjago Tower, the daily Bugle or The Jazz Club would look out of place.
Man, this will do so much to add to my natural areas planned for the City.
I’m not into City, but I still picked up this set. The otters and scenery work with my fantasy setting and the rest is good for parts.

I hear you. I strongly dislike the term ‘3D printing’ for much the same reason. Printing is definitionally 2D and the process doesn’t involve printing.

Thanks, and sure!
I think I need to update the design a bit myself, as this 2006 design is not very sturdy, especially on the joint between the front part and the trike mold. I was planning a few forestry-based designs in the near future and might have a go at the quad again!
Considering the wildlife, I might bOTTER to get this
I love this little set! Will try to get it on discount since I have more pressing sets to get, like the TIE Bomber.
Those otters are so cute.
Thanks to HP and now City, I finally have otter and hare Jedi that can become one with the Force while also retaining a shimmering remnant of their former personality and can provide much-needed advice to the other young, force-sensitive forrest creatures.
Thankfully this set looks easy to obtain cheap here in Australia (unlike the Picnic in the Park from last year)
And when they show up on PaB in a few months I will almost certainly be snagging a bunch of the park ranger torsos (I will be buying one copy of the set to get the otters though)
Wow.. second time I have caught myself saying this is good value for the set, 9.99 USD and you get two otters, a fish, and a new figure (well for now, guessing the torso will be used again). It will be great value if the set appears on sale at retailers like Amazon.
I love quads so I'm happy. Might see about taking off the brown piece behind her so she can sit down. Otters are cute. I'm thinking of getting two and build one like a mirror image and place them together. No ugly black part visible that way
I feel that the ATV is generic and a tad rudimentary (which of course isn't a major flaw from a 10 dollar set). But this is IMO obviously overshadowed by the unquestionably cute otters. I guess this also reminds me of 60300 , a $10 wildlife set also with basic ATV. However, IMHO this is probably superior given the slightly more substantial habitat and better value, which is a gratifying surprise.

The otters had better steer well clear of the quad if they don't want to meet the same fate!
Great...but the set really should have come out before Christmas...with a washtub...:)
Also: You, You, YOU OTTER KNOW!!! (Thanks Alanis:))
Set of the year 2023 confirmed!

Best holiday movie ever.
Already out of stock at Lego France.
The ATV design works really well for mini-dolls as well as minifigures--interesting given how well this would slot into Heartlake City!
Sold out on Lego Australia, still available on alternate certified store but with limit of 1
I'm guessing people buying up to go with the A frame cabin due to be released 4 Feb. Was going to wait till then to buy the Otter set, but just bought 1.
This is an ottermatic buy!
I’m hoping for a honey badger recolor of the otters. Honey badgers are my favorite animal so seeing a mold made for a close relative of them is something that I appreciate.
