Random set of the day: Pirate Lookout
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1696 Pirate Lookout, released during 1992. It's one of 9 Pirates sets produced that year. It contains 17 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 1,594 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

And what a view you can obtain from that slight pile of rocks...
Gotta love that purple frame! Good box art can do so much, especially with that attention to detail even for the outer edges and sides
I wonder if @pxchris has this one?
Rumli: "What's happening out there?"
Legolarrrrs: "Shall I describe it to you... or would you like me to find you a barrel?"
Lookout!! There's a pirate about!
Ah--classic 90s Pirates set! Those tiny little yellow island beaches with their barrels and flags.
Beautiful.
I loved these little pocket money Pirates sets.
With every new overly-elaborate $400 set that comes out, old sets like these just look better and better… :)

That pile of rocks holds the whole beach together!
Yarr!
Oooo, I own this one. Lol. All the above comments I agree with. Some were pretty hilarious, too.
Once upon a time, not every single set this size was an ATV
Sure, put the guy with the eyepatch on lookout duty. Makes perfect sense.
Before we had tan…

40 years ago wasn't year of the Rabbit, but did have a rabbit with a Tan bread : 3708 : Rufus Rabbit
But yeah, normal bricks and plates didn't exist yet in Tan.
Closest what comes to Tan in 1992 would be the sails in 6271 : Imperial Flagship
1998 is when Tan bricks and plates really came to life, with the Adventurers desert sets, beforehand mainly used as Baseplates in Western/Divers sets.
Kind of a sad Pirate mini set.. others had treasure chests, Monkey's, cannon, this just has a Pirate and a barrel
Missing these sets...I’m hoping they come out with remakes.
Seeing how loosely those plates are held together is giving me conniptions. I’m wondering if child me would have added things to connect them more thoroughly or just dismantled the whole thing to be used elsewhere
I expected a lookout to be a little higher.

Sets this size are currently the domain of magazine gifts, for example 122224
Loved these little sets. It's astonishing how much play value they held in the eyes of a child.

Now I want a Pirate ATV.
Thing is: that isn't 'the name' of the set; it was 'the warning' yelled at the guy...which he responded a little late from, from what we see...:D
Seventeen pieces? Whoa, slow down there Maurice. This is too much excitement!
One of my first sets.
Love it!
Fun fact: this pirate with a brown hat is called First Mate Rummy in the original Lego Pirates book... But this pirate has a black hat. Therefore he's an imposter!
Or Rummy with a black hat. But this pirate was so common there must be at least a few imposters among them!
Ooh I remember having this as a kid. Wonder if I used instructions to build it, or just looked at the picture.
Looking at sets like this in the site's 3d Viewer is fun.
This was my very first set ever. I got it in September of 1995, making me a little over 3 years old. I have lost both his original weapons, possibly the hat as well, but the rest is still there. This set set me on a long path of loving Lego, which I still am on today (Obviously) but it also set me on a Pirate Lego loving path. It helped that Sea Mates, another pirate set, was my second set.
Though technically it was the bagged version of this set, but whatever.
I may live and breath Blacktron, but Pirates is where my heart truly lies. Thanks to this guy.

Just as well Lego didn't do Captain Pugwash. No telling what impostors there might have been!

It's a "Pirate, look out!"

There's black. There's white. And there's yellow. I'm calling it. This is a honorary Blacktron set!
These Small boxes didn't pop up in Germany before 1995, so I was amazed to find them on vacation abroads. Too late for this one, but I took the chance and got one pirate 1733 for my brother's 4th birthday!
Such a funny coincidence. Just got this set in the latest bulk lot, which I got 2 days ago. It was missing the gun and the plant piece looks like it was chewed by some kind of being (be it a toddler or a dog), but the rest is there, including the instructions.
Great little set
