It’s not buried

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not too well buried if you ask me. What are you supposed to do, just put the plate on top?

Also, OH HECK, that monkey's got a sword! Forget burying the treasure, RUN!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Look, are these guys all just spying on each other, digging up the previous buried treasure, and reburying it on the next tiny little island?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

1989 was a good first year for pirates. But not necessarily because of this set.
Although, it does come with gold coins, a treasure chest, and a monkey. So it was a great entry set I guess.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Coins, chest, monkey, flintlock, flag, sword, minifigure.
Another great Pirates small boxed set.

Although the name is quite misleading.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the few pirate sets that I got back in the day! Also, still have it!

Considering it was my first Pirates set, I'd have to agree.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Didn't we have this the other day? Or did I dream that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’ve always loved that monkey mold. It’s cute, but in a strange way. I remember as a kid I thought it was weird that my pirate ship had a monkey with it, but it was such a cool mold I didn’t mind.

Also the fact that it has minifig hands for hands is pretty bizarre.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My mistake....it was a different pirate the other day. Came with a shark and a parrot.
Both sets are rather fantastic though.

Another one of my childhood favorites… they’re playing all the hits!

More like deja-huw.

By in United States,

This was probably my first Pirates set. What a classic little build.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I have that pirate and the monke

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

So iconic! I want the chrome coins back!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The real buried treasure is the friends we made along the way ...

... and buried because snitches get stitches.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Human1229: I always liked the fact that you could line up the monkey's hands so they could grip a longer bar than just the handle of a minifig tool.

@ChromedCat: Well, of course you think so. Not that I disagree, just saying.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@TheOtherMike:
You can do that with minifigs' hands, too, if you set the bar at the right angle. I've been able to pose Darth Maul with his two-handed, double-ended lightsaber by using 2x 3L trans-red bars, and 1x each light-bley telescope and standard lightsaber hilt.

By in Canada,

Ooooooooooh...What do Ya' do with a drunken monkey,
Give 'im a sword, call him 'flunky',
Fed 'em 'naners 'til he's chunky...all together now
Early in the morning...:D

"$3.25! "

The year this was released, federal minimum wage in the US was $3.35. After income tax, social security, and all the other payroll deductions, this represented as much as two hours of labor in terms of take home pay.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Those coins.

So many times I get a pirate lot and those coins are almost always missing.

They must be buried somewhere!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This makes me so bummed I sold all my classic pirates stuff to buy N64 games when I was a teenager.

I have 21322 Barracuda Bay now and it's great, but I miss the gold coins and those old monkeys. They are a bit strange, but they were so playable because they could grab anything, hang on or slide down rigging lines by their tails, etc.

Gold coins were great too -- they were always the center of the story when I played with my brother. I'm disappointed every time I get a treasure chest in a modern set and all it has is a gem or some stupid non-chrome 1x1s.

The stuff I remember playing with the most was the glow-in-the-dark ghost, the shooting cannons, the gold coins and the monkeys and they don't have any of them anymore.

Well what else are they supposed to do for fun, tv and internet haven’t been invented yet

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Another one of these. I suppose 'small spaceship' can be a more distinct build more easily than 'small island with pirate, treasure, flag and animal.' Because there's only so many ways you can design those!

Not complaining though. These kinds of sets were missing in the Pirates II theme from 2009 and the Pirates III theme from 2015.

And: you can never have enough islands, pirates, treasures, flags and animals!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Was a regular visitor of local hospitals at the age of 6 when this set was released. Was happy to get it as a gift. Better than any magazine or book.
Therefore, great set.

By in Netherlands,

The pride of my Lego Pirates collection! And unfortunately the entirety of my Lego Pirates collection. Well, except for a comic book, that is.

But no worries, this guy back in the day had a bunch of Playmobil friends.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This set is, literally, pure gold.

Easily the thing you could convince your mum to buy you on a rainy Tuesday afternoon and tonnes of fun with two figures. Shame the coins were so easy to lose!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Some years ago we assembled all small sets we had of 20 pieces or less (according to Bricklink) and both my sons without hesitation picked this set as their favourite (although having two of them might have helped too in that regard?), mainly for the pieces you get with this tiny set!

Gravatar
By in France,

Lots of pirates sets on RSotD recently, not that I'm complaining, I love them. If only Lego could do another run in the style of the barracuda Bay... The current rumors about the pirate maxifigure aren't what I expect.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

The set itself is a treasure. I love these small sets. Makes me wish I had some of them.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

come on lego bring the pirates back

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The treasure appears to have been buried, but then this pirate dug it up. Hence the shovel.

I have great nostalgia for this, with this being my first of two Pirates sets. Still have it. It was exciting at the time, because this theme had so many new parts and prints, and the photography on box art and in catalogues really helped sell these.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nostalgic. If it was up to me I would skip a few tv based themes and bring themes like this back.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Adjusted for inflation this little sets rrp would be 7.5 usd today. Quite expensive by today's standards!

And worth every cent I would say.

@thor96 : it's got a minifig, an articulated animal, weapons, a printed flag, and several chromed pieces.
Show me one current set at that RRP that matches or surpasses those criteria.

Relatable: sold all my Lego (Yellow Castle, Classic Space, blue-rail trains) for an Amiga 500. The folly of youth. What's disturbing me rather more is that it's only just occurred to me that I think I sold my Lego before the Pirates theme even appeared. I feel very old.

Gravatar

@AustinPowers:
Well, from what I recall, when you’re a kid who doesn’t have to go to work, everything is worth every penny. I felt that way about an in-ground pool, even though there’s no way my family could have afforded the installation, much less the upkeep.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The buried treasure maybe refers to this set contains a spade which was missing from all the other sets containing a treasure chest, so only this chest could be buried. At the time Mini-fig pack 6251 seemed far more useful, although you didn't get a 4 handed sword fighting monkey until 6252 !

Gravatar
By in United States,

@PurpleDave: That's true about the hands, but the monkey's were much easier to line up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The best of the tiny Pirate sets!! The box art is awesome too! I really miss those shiny gold coins.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Got this in 1989, my firts pirate set! Was a lot of new pieces for a low pice.

Which is about $8 in 2023 dollars. We'd be outraged if they released something like this for $8 today.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I just noticed you get two sprues of coins here. 8 coins fills treasure chests quite nicely. Sets from the late 90s often had 4 and the chests always would feel so empty.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My first Pirates set ever. Not the greatest build, but it gets you a lot of the interesting new stuff.

I think this is based upon the last scenes of the 6255 Pirate Comic Book, where Captain Foul forces Redbeard's (Roger's) men to dig up the Blackheart Cousins' treasure hinted at by the 'Golden Medaillon' (oddly though it's not the map included in the sets).

The UK catalogue refers to the characters as Bo'sun Will and Spinoza (the monkey).

I agree with Spinoza, but I don't think the pirate is Will. Bo'sun Will is specifically portrayed wearing (almost) completely red and is rather young, so has no beard at all. The minifigure included with 6255 is a much more faithful representation of the character (he reappeared in 6267). Also the UK catalogue erroneously identifies the soldier from 6245 as Governor Broadside, which he clearly isn't (maybe the prototype had him indeed, but it was changed to make the Broadside figure more special).

Maybe the blue-striped pirate is supposed to be the ship's cook Flashfork, however he is always portrayed with a blue headwrap, so probably the guy from this set is really unnamed?

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the ones I have from in my original collection. This 6245 and 6251 were the only Pirates themes I got as a child. But I still have them.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Even though I’ve never been into Pirates, I picked this set up around 1994 for its parts. Back then, it was much harder to get particular pieces, so small sets like this one were among the best ways of getting desirable parts.

Be still my beating heart. This is the one that every low-income kid had even as they coveted the large ships and islands.

This criteria is matched every year by polybags. Every year we get at least 3 sets that follow the scheme: 1 minifig, 1 animal fig, some parts for a location. And their RRP is 4,99$ for example: 30585, 30588, 30391, 30646, 30416

I don't see a single chrome piece in any of those polybags. So definitely not comparable.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Of all the genres of impulse-sized LEGO set out there, "Pirate on a beach" has got to be one of the best, perhaps even THE best.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

swords don't kill people, monkeys do!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@thor96:
Well, two of those match. What was the third one?

@darkstonegrey:
Ha! Joke's on Monkey! With all four hands full, and no branch to hook his tail over, he's going to have to stand on that thing or start dropping swords. Not only will it require all his concentration to maintain balance, but you can forget dodging and weaving.

@AustinPowers:
One of the two sets that actually does fit the criteria comes with Pascal. Pascal beats chrome.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@PurpleDave: Pascal? I had to look up what you even meant by that. Appears to be just a small green blob. Doesn't even beat an articulated monkey with sword, let alone a stash of chrome gold coins.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm curious as to why the monkey doesn't count as a minifig, especially given it has four minifig arms and hands.

He does if you’ve seen the movie. Coolest Disney Princess sidekick by a long shot.

Gravatar

Gravatar

It's prefect and I'm pretty sure I had one of these.
