Random set of the day: Evil Ogel Attack
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 4798 Evil Ogel Attack, released during 2002. It's one of 17 Alpha Team sets produced that year. It contains 20 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$3/£1.99.
It's owned by 974 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $7.40, or eBay.

Um... What exactly are they attacking?
Thats a weird visor piece than the usual deal. Whats up with that?
I picture this thing just going in circles due to the front spinning blade being stronger than the propulsion from the back propellor.
Ogel is the anti-Lego
@R1_Drift: That visor piece was originally designed for astronauts (so as to be more accurate to what real-life astronauts wear than https://brickset.com/parts/design-35334), and saw occasional non-space-related uses such as here.
Loved this theme. l never realized until l was an adult that Ogel was spelled backwards

Misconceptions?
@TheOtherMike:
Yup, because everyone knows you gotta protect your skin from getting too much damaging solar radiation down in the sunless depths of the ocean.
As opposed to Benevolent Ogel Attack.

ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!

don't worry about silly things like details, JUST ATTACK!"
"And remember, Captain Darling and I will be right behind you".
'About 20 miles behind you'.
That drone doesn't look anything like a sea creature, Ogel was getting lazy with his designs at this point

I always loved the idea of that name! Now whenever I can't think of a name original enough for a villain, I just spell any random word backwards until I am happy with a result!
He's attacking the ocean itself. That 'saw blade' is actually a stove burner, and he's progressively boiling the ocean with it. Truly devious.

Whatever Alpha Team members you have, of course!
Well it’s nice to have a resolution to the mystery of the missing rpotd and the attempt on the life of Rmfotd.
Ogel… *shakes fist*
Evil Ogel sounds like a villain from the new Dreamzzz line.
"Ogel: The opposite of fun and play" I remember reading something like this in and old Lego magazine or catalog. I never realized that his name backwards was Lego until I was older.
Well, the run of RSotDs that I owned as a kid ends at two! That said, I did own a minifigure of Ogel here, but it wasn't this one; it was the one from 6771, before he lost his left hand.
As far as I'm aware, canon has never given us an explanation for just what happened to Ogel's hand; just that the minifigure had two normal black-gloved hands in 2001, then had one of them replaced with a trans-red hook in 2002 with no explanation and no other differences between the two figures. Did one of his mutant sea creatures bite it off before he perfected his mind control over them?
...alternately he got careless while using the massive blade in this set. That is also a possibility!
He's a pretty plain minifigure, all told - no printing anywhere except his face - but I still have a weird attachment to his design, in part due to the Alpha Team PC game. Nostalgia, I guess!
Ah, I own this one! Or at least... the boxed version of it anyway.
It's pretty fun. You get Ogel, the main supervillain of Alpha Team. He's identical to his 2001 version, hence the suit (it was originally for his mind-control machine were he stood in a chamber to channel his will into the Ogel Orbs). But now he has a trans-red hook, as apparently he lost one in the previous mission.
I guess it can also double as a diving suit.
The build is a fun underwater propulsion device with a surprisingly posable saw blade arm. It's a very fitting escape vehicle or boss battle weapon for the evil villain to have.

I’m going to assume it was a catastrophic toast-buttering incident before he had that first cup of coffee.

I missed this entire line (Dark Ages and all), but what a time that must've been. Just straight up getting the big bad of the theme in a $2 set, with some nice parts to boot.
I'm not too concerned about the "attack"-portion of the set's name, I'm more interested in the fact that it implies that there's otherwise-aligned Ogels around. Were there sets that contained "Good Ogel", "Morally Ambiguous Ogel", "Unkind Towards Other People But Honestly Great With Animals Ogel", "Aggressively Indifferent Ogel", "Don't Talk To Me Before My First Coffee Ogel"?
I've played a lot of fighting-games. You'd be surprised at how many near-identical characters can be crammed into a roster whose sole defining feature is the mood that they woke up in that morning, and how much that mood can influence the properties of your move-set. And dang, I could absolutely relate to a "Pre-Coffee Ogel"."
Don't forget "Chaotic Neutral" Ogel!

So, like PlayMobil?

What I meant was the fact the visor piece is missing the usual trapezoid and sprue mark in modern versions in the helmet. You can see the difference from this set's visor to 3365 's visor piece.
Having a saw the size of your craft may be overkill, but what good spy villain doesn't love overkill?

He has a plan: attack.

Love me a good Blackadder reference! "I have a cunning plan..."

Evil is actually his first name, until he legally changed it to "Misunderstood." (This is real)
I still think Ogel is one of the best original LEGO villains. He’s got that jacked up eye, a trans red hook for a hand, and stylish armor.
He needs a comeback.

Speaking of comebacks: We need the Brickster and the Infomaniac from the LEGO Island games too!
....and while we are at it, Super Station Master as well (he was in the LEGO Loco video game and companion set 2585 )
At the time (my Christmas stocking in 2002), Evil Ogel Attack was kind of an exciting get--I already had the OG Ogel, but the trans-red hook was very cool so I was happy to upgrade (naturally, in my lore at the time, he lost his hand thanks to Dash, the good guy hero, just as Baron von Barron must have lost his to Johnny Thunder, or Captain Redbeard to the Imperial admiral--lore, btw, that had generally not been retained).
But then I got a couple more, larger, Mission Deep Sea sets with hookéd Ogel and this was rendered somewhat forgetably redundant.
Ah, I get a lot of nostalgia looking at this set. I didn't own it, but a couple of my brothers did. But the nostalgia is more for the Alpha Team Undersea wave in general. Were they good sets? Not really. But I was 10 when these were released, so right in the target audience. And I really like the box art. Pure nostalgia for me.
And Ogel was the best villian Lego ever made. Would make a great leader for Blacktron, if you were so inclined.
