So if you get rescued by this, you'd have to ride on the back?
That seems unsafe.

Not necessarily, there's also the roof!

By in United Kingdom,

I'm puzzled. Why has the Homepride Flour Man hijacked a fire engine?

I loved this little fire engine as a kid. Solid 4-wide truck that was both fun to build and play with.

Opening doors! What will they think of next?

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

It is funny how its successor, 6621 (which I own), looks more primitive than this set despite being released three years later.

No, there’s a fire, and you have to rescue the van. Because, um…

Not all rescue trucks are built for patient transport in the real world either.

Never took a wagon ride? Hold on to the railing and you'll be fine.

Me too, had this one as a kid, and while I did not have a fire station, I had this and the 6366 set to make up my fire dept.

By in Poland,

Proper, nononsense lego van. Very good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sentimental happy feelings - I had two of these, and I have one sitting on my shelf right now.

By in United States,

Perhaps my absolute favorite set as a child. One of the few I’ve kept!

By in United States,

Ah, the halcyon days of glue and metal... I miss them fondly ^_^

By in Netherlands,

I remember this. For such a small set it had so many new parts and prints. It was my first set with the new string with nozzle and its reel and reel holder. Also my first set with the new printed fireman and doors to succeed the stickered firemen and doors of the previous years. The hinge roof was also new for 1981 but I already got one of those in the ambulance that I had bought earlier in the year.

By in Jersey,

Perfect early LEGOLAND Town set.

Do you think there were complaints about too many Police and Fire releases back in the early 1980s?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Fire and Rescue, just as long as it’s not a very big fire

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

4-wide, best ride.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

We really need every Brickset member who has it now to keep it plus five additions.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Hmmm...guessing we have to 'rescue' it from its depression after being 'fired'...no:)

Miss those wheels, also wish TLG would use those type of doors more; especially on vehicles...think: a ladder, turntable, and elevating hinge on its back would be too busy...:)

By in Netherlands,

For a moment I thought this was one of those primitive small 70s vehicles and wondered why we got something that old on a Sunday.

Then I noticed the minifig
Then I noticed the hose
Then I noticed the headlights
Then I noticed the doors
Then I noticed the roof

I am blind and an idiot lol

But yeah, the all red build with such a small compact shape didn't immediately click with me as 80s. Sometimes I forget how much changed throughout that decade and how relatively uniform town was throughout it compared to Space or Castle, themes I'm more familiar with.

I think there was a greater variety of other City sets, so that the number of police and fire sets, which I do not recall to have been excessive, did not stand out so much as of late.

Anyway, seeing this set has awoken happy memories of my early Lego days :-)

By in Netherlands,

Looking at the 1981 Lego catalog there aren't that many police and fire sets compared to other types of sets. There were houses, a gas station, a bus station, a hospital, rescue helicopter, ambulance, several construction sets and a few other buildings and cars in addition to 3 police sets and 4 fire sets. There were a total of 28 town sets (not including the supplemental road plate, road sign and tree sets) on pages 14-16 of the 1981 Dutch catalog that I have, so only 1/4 of them are police and fire.

Don’t panic! It’s not a hijacking. Fred had a career change, that’s all.

By in United States,

Sweet set. I know I'm pretty nice to look at, but he really needs to keep his eyes on the road.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Fitted with experimental propulsion system: instead of moving on the road, it makes the road move! See how both zoom past the vegetation in the background?
Cool effect btw!

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Lovely!

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Our first Lego set ever. I have it still in a good condition. Took me about 35 years to get its sibling 6653

Objective achieved :-)

By in United States,

My second and much loved second fire set.
I never had a fire station but somehow I had just about enough red 2 wide bricks to build one, but no base plate, unless I sacrificed making the police station 6384. So between emergencies my fire crew of 6602, 6650 and 6657 had to hide off stage.
Looking at it now it seems weird to me that 6650 and 6657 were 4 years apart, that seems like a lot of time now. I also realize I got them at the same store (Brendle's for those keeping up).

Gravatar
By in United States,

A sturdy, simple four-wide build that even after 42 years I can still build without the instructions. One of my favorite town sets from the 80's. Cost was $3.99 at Boscov's. Still in its original box!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

This got a lot of use in my Lego town! Bought a 2nd years later..

^@ ChicoCheco - took me almost as long to get my 6653. I have a couple of those too now :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This was my first Lego set and I treasured it for what felt like an eternity but was probably about two weeks. Rebuilt it over and over.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Our minivan is bigger than this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Too good, can't make fun of it.

Also I'm just realizing I almost missed commenting on a set of the day, and I cannot let that stand.
