Random set of the day: Cabin Cruiser
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 4011 Cabin Cruiser, released during 1991. It's one of 3 Boats sets produced that year. It contains 90 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$19.75.
It's owned by 4,735 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $130.90, or eBay.

Very chill vibes
Almost forgot to comment on this because the Orlando Predators just won a nail biter of a game against the Carolina Cobras. 54-59 LET'S GO PREDS!
The only thing this has anything to do with the set is that the Predators were formed in the same year as its release. Lucky coincidence.
I picked up one of these either off BL or at a convention from a vendor. It’s a fantastic set, and I think better than what came later in the 2010s.
That's a beauty.
From the best years of the Classic Town era! This boat hull came in black during the 1980s as a Police boat. This was the first and only (?) appearance in white as a pleasure craft.
Let’s hope the fisherman doesn’t get pulled into the water by that shark he’s about to hook…
Still love that Lego boat hulls (one's molded, not brick-built) float. I mean, yes you can put 'em on a baseplate (preferably blue, but I won't judge:)), or sink/tub, pool, or head for the lake or ocean...still cool:)
This was one the first LEGO sets I remember getting as a kid. The boat actually floats! Unfortunately, I was so excited that I opened the box in the parking lot and ended up losing the string for the fishing pole.
I always loved the torso print on the captain, if he can really be called that. I'm not sure the guy fishing counts as crew, and he's listed as a "Boat Worker" in the database. https://brickset.com/minifigs/boat007 I always wanted one of the motors mentioned in the back page of the instructions. Don't know where I would have used it, but I wanted it. Even without that motor, I still had a lot of fun with this set. Nostalgia for it is the reason I got 4642, which, while not as impressive of a set, still had a guy fishing for shark off the fantail and the set number on the hull sticker.
Got one of these in a eBay LEGO lot, pretty nifty design

About that Lego barcode case, your link was certainly interesting. This is a weird case from an investigation/prosecution standpoint. Makes me want to do some more digging.
First, a couple of clarification points. All crimes prosecuted within a state are at the 'state level.' This is regardless of what jail they're being held in or what political entity (usually county DA office) is conducting the prosecution. That's why such cases are styled, e.g., California v. John Doe. The exception to this are traffic court and small misdemeanors like parking or petty theft which are handled by municipalities, e.g., Detroit v. Bluish-red Dave.
Second, your link shows he was being prosecuted at BOTH the state and federal level. Theft at state level. Mail and wire at federal. This seems like overkill. Yet, it makes it more likely that you're correct that he served a longer sentence. Although, a white-collar crime without priors, violence, or personal victims means it's likely that he would serve sentences concurrently.
Third, the involvement of the USPS is intriguing. I can't see them putting forth a lot of effort on this one. His crimes don't undermine the interstate common carrier parcel delivery system.
Moreover, the fact that Target alone had such high estimated losses means that perhaps they were doing most of the leg work on this one. Perhaps it's a Javert v. Jean Valjean kind of story where a Target investigator really wants to get his man!
Yet, the evidentiary burdens are going to be enormous. That's a whole LOT of Lego. I can't see Target, Washington State, or the feds wanting to put in the time and money. Moreover, I bet that guy was so scared that he took the first deal he was offered. It sure would be interesting to find out what it was.

Until you notice that ominous fin in the bottom right and realise this is about five seconds before a shark snatches their catch from them!
Bought this one in a small toy shop on a French exchange visit just after it was released. Never could bring myself to apply the stickers so they're still on the sheet all these years later. Was good to see a change from the usual police/fire/tug/cargo vessels we had been offered until that point, though I also thought the earlier 4010 using the same hull was a neat design.
These were beautiful Lego boats. I had the police boat that came out, alongside this one. I loved that thing. I cleaned and dusted it a few years ago, it's still in great condition.
Ohhhh! My first set! (childhood memories mode on) :,)
I bought this set as an adult due I love the summer vibe of it. It was serious used, yellowed, missing stickers, but the hydrogen peroxide sticker replacement helped as always. So is has it's former glory again :)

Did the hydrogen peroxide treatment stick? I've used it a few times on a sef with a lot of parts and although it seems a bit better it still seems to not be entirely gone.
Thing is, I don't have the best equiment for it unfortunately and over here we don't get a lot of strong sun. So I haven't been able to do it much
Ah, I got this as a child! I still have it today. It came with a heavy brick to act as ballast for fishing trips in the sink or bath tub.
One of the few memories of my early childhood is opening this Set in my bed at waking up on Christmas Day. A memory that will last forever until the end of my days.
Nice model. The retail price caught my attention. Recent city boats have also been around 20. And this one is over 30 years old. I guess you could say Lego boats have gotten way cheaper, with inflation in mind.
I am jealous of everyone who kept sets from their childhood. I quickly dismantled sets perhaps a month or so after building and the pieces went into the part collection, and when I hit a certain age I got rid of them all.
My first set that wasn't a poly bag! I got this set in the summer of 1991 while i was on my first ever beach vacation in Panama City Beach Florida. This set is very nostalgic and is very dear to my heart.
So this 'just chillin' summer vibe little set gets a shark but 4210 doesn't?
*Ominous Jaws music starts playing*
I was in kind of a dark age when this set came out. I was growing and getting ready for collage, so didn’t have time for child’s play. I missed many set in that period and this is certainly one of the sets that I regret not getting.
60221 : Diving Yacht and 31083 : Cruising Adventures were pretty good recent alternatives for this. (altho the 3-in-1 brick built ship does not float :) )
City had a couple specific Fishing Boats as well:
60147: Fishing Boat
60015: Coast Guard Plane
4642: Fishing Boat
And even the current 60373 : Fire Rescue Boat is quite similar if you leave off the fire related equipment/stickers.

And you certainly don’t want a shark snatching your catch!
This was still shown in the large catalogue that came with sets in 1993, the oldest extant catalogue for most of my childhood, so it sits on the edge of my childhood knowledge. I was more familiar with (and had one of) the 1996 Boats, but with a more critical adult eye, this looks a bit more filled out and a really fun set.

They have an appetite for tasty, grilled shark fins, maybe with some garlic butter :P
This set managed to make me, a car kid, totally excited about the boat!

I am lucky enough to have parents who purchased a bungalow with a large attic shortly after I was born, and still live there today.
I will probably never myself own a house with the same amount of space, which is why the 80s and 90s Town and Trains layout is unlikely to ever get reassembled as it used to be - one good reason why the 6399 and 6542 got sold on a few years ago.

I'd be more worried about the Shark snatching me rather than the catch! We're gonna need a bigger boat...

I remember reading about this back in the day. The Wall Street Journal had a very in-depth article regarding the scam. It’s behind a paywall, but worth the read.

@TheOtherMike:
If it's a commercial vessel, the person in charge is commonly highly-trained and licensed, and is referred to by the non-military rank of captain. If it's a private vessel, the same person would typically be referred to as the skipper. The Skipper from Gilligan's Island would technically be a captain, since he was operating a commercial vessel, and is responsible for the health and safety of all crew and passengers on board. Skipper is also used as a term of respect for miliary naval captains, so the fact that the two crew refer to each other as "Skipper" and "Little Buddy" shows a very close friendship has formed.
@StyleCounselor:
I did a show the past three days, so it was out the door about an hour after waking up, and in bed about an hour after getting home, with no access to the internet during the long days, so two-way communication kinda stretched out to the extreme.
@jkb:
Gordon Ramsey did a 1-hour special called Shark Bait, where he explored the (often illegal) shark-fishing industry (you can find the full episode, or individual clips, on Youtube). In one part, he tried shark fin soup, and said that the broth was very good, if you get rid of the stringy, tasteless shark fin that serves no purpose other than to proclaim to all around that you have money.
Oh my, this is one of the sets i had as a kid! I love seeing these set of the days and it triggering a memory of owning one. Sometimes I can't be sure if it was me, or my LEGO loving friend that had it though.
Whenever I encounter this set it’s always without the stickers. Which is good that the kids played with it well but bad because it’s now incomplete, in a way!
@Lego_a_gogo: My family, and several others in our homeschool group, had 1034, which had two of those ballast bricks, for stuff that needed more load to demonstrate principles. One of them had gotten it open (I'm not sure if by accident, or if they'd deliberately pried off the glued-on end), giving them access to the hunk of metal that provided the weight.
@gloslegofan: I never went through a full-on Dark Age (more of a Dim Age, where I was still buying and building Lego, but wasn't finding as much enjoyment in it), so I still have all my sets, minus the occasional lost or damaged piece. Sets of a certain age or older, such as this one, have been parted out into organizers, though. Made for easier MOCing that way.

Quite Chill indeed so quaint...
Both my dad and a cousin of mine had this set, and when I got both from their collections I had 2. One's assembled and packed away, the other parted out (with its decals peeled off for build flexibility). Brings back good memories.
