Those binoculars at the front were such a cool technique
Oh he's in pursuit alright, but it's not for criminal activity... ;)
^ Depending on the laws of the time and place!
This and 7781 are the only two sets that had that wheel in pearl-gold. Partway through the run, the brand-new mold got retired and they subbed in a two-sided rim.
The original Lego Batman line is so wonderful and full of charm. Successive versions were all actually pretty great, but the original wave has a lovely purity about it. Perfect toys.
I'm pretty sure this set began my run of, "bought the superhero set just for the minifigs".
This set was a topic of discussion a few days back with the motorcycle faring.
I still wish I'd bought this at TRU back then. Gatling gun on the front of a dragster... so ridiculous and so cool lol.
Looking at that Gatling gun (which I'll agree with @Sandinista is a very cool technique) now, all I can think of is a line from The Dark Knight Returns. "Rubber bullets. Honest."
Didn't have this one, thought it looked ridiculous; and this is coming from a guy who has the original 'Tumbler' Batmobile aka: The BEAST!!!:D
This set is brought to you and was made possible by part number 4200486.

they were used on multiple sets like 79111 [which i own]
He is firing his 'bat-missle' at Catwoman
It doesn't say but this looks like 4+ set, it has the figures but not much design effort.
My first batman!
For a guy who doesn't like guns that's an awful lot of guns he's got at the front of that thing
The Batman I theme would be charming... if the prices now aren't treating it like solid gold!
Seriously. I owned this, the Killer Croc set and the Batwing sets once, bought second-hand. They're fun toys (although I didn't get to handle them much as I never built them). But it would have been crazy not to sell them at the good condition they were in (like new!). I'm pretty sure I tripled or quadrupled the money I paid to get them.
Holy aftermarket prices Batman!
It's sad how these are now hard to view as just fun sets because of that. I never got any in 2006-08 (pretty sure they were in stores for a ridiculously short time and the 07 and 08 ones I don't think I've even seen) so I won't ever see them again :/
Hey I own this one. Might well be the last non-Star Wars set I bought before plummetting into my dark ages.
@Lego_lord:
I won’t say it’s a _good_ design, but I do have to give them credit for trying to never repeat vehicles in the original Batman theme. Sadly, the vehicle designs generally weren’t that great.
@Binnekamp:
I don’t know why the Batman sets command such high prices compared to DCS sets that followed four years later, but it could be the simple fact that it’s a theme with a fixed set list vs being open-ended like DCS, or it could be a preference for the Batman minifigs vs their DCS counterparts.

About the vehicles’ design in the initial wave of Batman, the only set I own is 7781 The Batmobile: Two-Face’s Escape. I had to buy it because: 1) Two-Face is my favorite Batman villain and 2) it’s the Batmobile. However … the thing that irks me about the build is one piece (on both sides of vehicle) sits on a tile part of a wedge plate and the ONLY thing keeping it there is a one stud connection on top of that piece. That 1x1 piece seemed to always be loose. It was connected to a technic pin and hose on the side which didn’t help much.
Unrelated,but we need DC stuff that's not batman related
These sets were fantastic though.
The dragster was durable enough for my kids to play with. The purple motorcycle is one of a kind. Two great minifigures. Excellent set for $10.
@LuvsLEGO_Cool_J:
The Ultimate Collector’s Batmobile is even worse. The model itself is pretty solid, but the giant bathead that flips over the jet engine intake on the front completely blocks the driver’s forward view, whether it’s in the up or down position. And by that I mean it sticks up at least as high as the underside of the operator’s compartment roof.
@graymattr:
Basically the same purple motorcycle appeared again six years later in 6858, the first Catwoman set for the DCS theme.
One of my favorite childhood sets. Still remember picking it up one morning before my half day kindergarten. Took a trip to Toys R Us and this is the set I chose that day. So fun to play with

The Batmobile has always been the exception since Batman 1989, for whatever reason. Even in the Arkham games, where he won’t kill (unlike in the pre-Battinson live-action films) the Batmobile is a tank with a minigun and missile launcher. That he tortures a guy almost to death with the wheels of.
Funny, I was talking about this motorcycle during the RSOD about three days ago. I never owned this one, only 6858, but the design is kinda interesting. I don’t remember if they brought the Bat Dragster into LEGO Batman: The Video Game (they weren’t always consistent with what vehicles from the sets would be unlockable), but they should've if they didn’t. I love me a nice “drag race” ;)
Catwoman’s motorcycle’s eyes fluoresce under UV light. :)

Hey, were they used in any other sets?
Y'know, a dragster isn't the most ridiculous Bat-Vehicle. For my money, that would be 70923.
The original Batman theme is a very specific moment in my life--I wasn't into superheroes as a kid and still haven't latched onto them much, but I have two of the original Batman sets--for whatever reason, those were the sets my mom (or my sister, who was 7) decided were the ideal LEGO sets to give me as a distraction when I broke my leg at the end of my first year of college. It was this and Killer Croc.
And it might just be that I have waaaaaay too many Batmans (Batmen?) from the Superheroes line from various used finds, but there is something just a bit nicer about the original sets.
