The 403-piece set will be free to pick up from the store for the first one hundred customers to show a sock at the front of the queue to enter the store.

"Free Dobby!"

Taken quite literally :-)

Poor Dobby. They're actually giving him away.

Where did you find this news? Is there a link to the Lego press release?

By in United States,

Doby will always be there for Harry Potter, or apparently, anyone with time to stand in line with an extra sock.

We were informed by Mischief, the UK PR agency for LEGO.

Shame it's so limited. If more widely available and longer I could have gone to my local store at the weekend for it.

But I guess that is why it's so limited, can't be giving too many of them away for nothing.

What an insane promo… Missed a trick in not headlining the article “Dobby is freeeee!!!“

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope they're stipulating CLEAN socks...

They gonna give away free Harrys on July 31st?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I dunno, I'd rather keep my sock.

That would be one way of making sure some people in front will give up waiting.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You should have to hand the sock over and walk around wearing one sock for the rest of the day.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah,when you think about it this has some bad connotations...

I was able to get one about an hour ago.

We got to the top of the queue and I said "is it too late for me to show you this (*shows sock that I just bought in a shop*) and luckily the guy at the door said I was only number 20.

There's a good chance that there might be some left quite late into the day as he said not many people know about it.

It's a nice wee set and happy to pick it up as we were in the city anyway.

Thematically consistent with the source material, then?

By in Germany,

With our washing machine, socks constantly get "eaten". Hence I have dozens of half sets of socks I could give them. Unfortunately I am not in London right now...

Gravatar
By in United States,

on the bright side, depending on how many people get the free set, that many Dobby's will be free. ***shudder*** does this mean all other dobby's are slaves to lego?

By in Australia,

What a great promo!!

Sure beats paying hundreds of dollars for LEGO, just to receive a small Gift with Purchase worth $20-40!!!….. and leading to endless hours of spoilt AFOL complaints (due to FOMO) about the high spend threshold!

By in Germany,

Just realized, this is in its own new category:
Gift withOUT purchase

Gravatar
By in United States,

But, what if I bring 2 socks?

We solved the single sock problem by only buying socks that look the same. This was after my wife got fed up with me wearing two different socks

Of course my kids have all kinds of different single socks and I encourage them to mix and match so I don't need to buy more lol

“Here’s a manky old sock, I’d like one Dobby set, please!”

Gravatar
By in Canada,

They should stipulate a "pair of socks" so as to be able to donate these to a shelter that could use them...

I saw Red Hot Chilli Peppers play in the 90s with nothing on except a tube sock on their respective junk. Great show!

Costco sells PUMA brand and every 6 months or so it seems that they slightly alter some of the sectional shading but not the overall sock design. Suffice to say, there was a fight when I pointed out the slight differences in the socks I was presented. :o)

Either read the book or see the film. Chamber of Secrets. Go.

I suspect you are asking humorously but since I am a humorous nerd I will explain. Because I have no life. :P

In the book & film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, house elves are a race enslaved by particularly cruel wizards. Dobby is a slave of the Malfoy family. As a mark of slavery, house elves are only dressed in rags. It is considered tradition that a wizard owner wishing to free their house elf from bondage provides their house elf with a piece of "real" clothing to mark their freedom.

In the finale of the book & film when Dobby arrives at Hogwarts with Lucius Malfoy, Harry Potter sneaks a dirty sock into Tom Riddle's Diary before Lucius takes it, and then Lucius hands off the book to Dobby who opens it an promptly finds the sock inside it and celebrates that he had been freed. Lucius realizes Harry Potter tricked him, but since he can't take out his aggression on a literal 12 year old boy he skulks and allows Dobby to go free regardless.

@StyleCounselor:
They never specified that you had to be holding the sock in your hand. Technically, you should be able to just roll up your pant leg (or not, if you're wearing shorts or a short skirt) and point at a sock on one of your feet.

@AustinPowers:
It sounds like you've still got time. How fast can you drive?

@dRevan:
Well, they're still _giving_ Dobby to you, so even the ones that are free aren't really free, if you think about it.

@winbrant:
Just got to show it. They didn't say anything about collecting them.

@xboxtravis7992:
And yet of course Dobby continues to wear the potato sack. I guess that's better than doing a Red Hot Chili Peppers impression. Also, Lucius totally would have had it out with Harry, but a newly liberated House Elf significantly outclasses a mere wizard in terms of magical prowess.

To one-up your nerdom. Lucius tries to kill Harry for the trick, but is slammed down the hall by the newly unleashed powers of Dobby. That's in the film and Lego sets (see, 4731 or 4736 ).

I can't remember what the book says. Guess it's time to read them again.

@PurpleDave : Dobby is wearing a dirty pillow case unless my memory has failed again.
