Day three of sets that probably would not actually fly.

I like that modern wedges allow studs to fit under them, but these ones look so clean and aerodynamic and really help sell the concept much better.

Flying is just all about how gracefully you can fall.

Um...THIS is an ULTRALIGHT, as in: a powered-hang-glider...did/does TLG NOT own encyclopedias, or have folks to do research...confused...:|

Fly, little extreme racer dude, fly!

I didn’t get a great look at Ultralight Flyer and assumed it was a hang glider, guess I was wrong.

Mad Hatter has one in LEGO Batman with a cloth wing/glider piece. I don’t know if there have been any real sets with a similar design.

Where do you see the title as ‘hang-flyer?’

Gliding, now that’s smooooth.

@Miyakan:
Depends on how forcefully yesterday’s RMotD throws it.

@MCLegoboy:
Flying is throwing yourself at the ground and missing.

All the more reason it wouldn't fly.

Props to this set.

By in Poland,

I don't have this glider, but I do have the one from Island Xtreme Stunts theme (6735) and I must say that the way the tube is attached to the glider is very flimsy. The tube doesn't hold the studs strongly enough to overcome the tension from arching so much and the hinges were very easily broken.

Oh so this is what yesterday’s guy was chasing!

Huwbot is on a run! (or a fly…)

At first glance I wondered why Boba Fett was hang-gliding.

Extreme Team were a regular feature in the Adventures magazine, and this glider made quite a few appearances!

Weirdly nostalgic for this despite that I lacked a 1998 catalogue. It don't know where I saw this but it inspired me to make one of my own. Maybe the 1999 edition of The Ultimate Lego Book?
Of course, this kind of build was also very popular as an alternate build. But this set really focussed on it.

Speaking of, I'm impressed that they mamaged to squeeze two alt builds out of this. One being a rudimentary prop boat with the hose as the round propellor cage. Ingenious.

Glad to see someone else who remembers those magazines! :D I collected all of them as a kid, but barely anyone else seems aware of them.

But yeah, I think it showed up in all three Extreme Team comics. The first two it was piloted by Daredevil Tom / Alexis (the red team member) though, if I recall rightly (one to get close enough to the stolen 6580 to remotely trigger its ejector seat, the other to break into the Lego City gold reserves). It was only in its third appearance it would have been used by the guy in this set, Fearless McCoy / Max... but the Brickster / Jailbreak Joe stole it right from under his nose so he barely actually got to use it then either.

I was passingly interested in this set at the time because of its comic appearances; but even back then I felt like it didn't look like there was much to the model so it didn't really feel worth it.

Xtreme Team! Back when I was spending all my money on Adventurers, I wanted this set to get a Max into my collection. He would have fit with my Rex from Speed Splasher: i.e. he has no flames on his helmet.

Honestly, I kind of think the Xtreme Team look better without the flames, but it was a good cost-saving measure on LEGO's part to make a fig that worked without needing to print it, while ALSO making it a lure to buy the bigger sets.

If you think about it, that's not a bad description of orbital mechanics.
