For someone out to uphold the law, this is one of the most villainous looking vehicles to pilot. Kind of sending a bit of a mixed message here...

The light-up cockpit display in this set is still so damn cool. Did LEGO ever make anything else like it?

By in New Zealand,

This looks like the coolest space set of the year.

By in United States,

The Space Police I ships all had large amounts of weaponry and no obvious propulsion systems. This set is interesting in that the detachable back section contains a light and sound system that also illuminates a special computer slope piece at the back of the extended cockpit!

Incredibly cool ship and with every unit sold on the secondary market, the prices rise. So, if you consider getting it, don't hesitate!

Interesting that this set is tagged "Light and Sound System," but the actual set just says "Light System." Same thing with 6481.

The piece itself (or more the 2 pieces) is indeed exclusive to this set, however set 6979 also had a light up cockpit of some sort.

@TheOtherMike:

Probably just a region/laws thing:
NA had it as "Light System" (unlike other 9V sets of the era this one does not have the siren piece)
whereas EU just kept the old "Light & Sound System" thing, because technically the system was there, the set just didn't feature "sound".

My parents found this for me in like 1993 or so at a toy store that was closing. I was thrilled because I'd really wanted it but I didn't expect it to be available anymore.

@Atuin:
If I'm not mistaken, 6979 only illuminates a pair of lights in the cockpit (in addition to the fiber optics system at the middle of the ship), while this set illuminates a special computer slope piece showing a schematic of the ship (in addition to the light bar at the middle of the ship).

The 3D view for this set shows the rear section detached as a separate ship but incorrectly uses the SPII computer slope piece. The back of the cockpit in the forward section is now also open to space upon removal of the rear section.

They _are_ evil. They're using a poor, defenseless Blacktron dude as ablative armor!

So, only slightly more than the crawler crane, decisions decisions ...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Space Police I was during my first Dark Age and this is one of the sets I really wish I had. ...and I wish I bought it used via the Lego newsgroup auctions (pre-eBay) or on eBay once that became a thing.

By in Canada,

Scum Police...

Someone needs to go and rescue that Blacktron before he's taken to the Space Lock-Up Isolation Base!

I need to get this set. It's one of the few sets I don't own that have a Blacktron minifig.

Love this set, took a year, after buying it, for the lights to finally work though... And having the battery in it makes it feel like your holding a brick. Exceptional set though. 9/10

By in Turkey,

Awesome set. I loved those windshields, looked sleek and aggressive.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ahhhh original Space Police. Love it. I can sleep well tonight.

By in Brazil,

I see many people say Space Police III was the best, but honestly, the first one was the peak. The color scheme with the use of trans-red parts is fantastic, the design of the vehicles is also much better.

6781 is the second favorite set from the subtheme for me (from the ones I own), 6895 is the best. (I don't own 6986 yet, but I think it would probably take the first spot)

Which is why the 80s and 90s were the best. Well among other things.

By in Belgium,

Finally a space set after a long time! :D This is my favourite Space Police 1 set, for me it’s even better than 6986 Mission Commander

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Soon as I saw the image I figured “oh man, that guy who really loves Blacktron sure isn’t going to like this.”

And yep, I was right. Bad luck @ElephantKnight

By in United States,

I don't have this one, but I have the Peace Keeper and the Space Lock-up Isolation Base. (And a modified/recolored Battrax in the same color scheme.) It's my favorite series - I'm more sentimental about these, Futuron, and MTron than classic space.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was the only Space Police set I didn't get back in the day--but I'm glad I eventually did get it. And I had forgotten all about that light-up computer panel--probably time to re-build it!

@stepwise I do love Classic Space, but M:Tron has a special place in my heart, too. I had a blacklight clock on my dresser and all my M:Tron sets out on display in front of it. The introduction of fluorescent parts was a huge deal. And so many great designs in M:Tron--even the smallest of them had real presence.

By in Netherlands,

As an owner of the Galactic Peace Keeper and Spy Trak 1 I can safely say that I'm good at the prices this one's going for. It's just bigger, better armed, and with light functions.

Okay I absolutely love it too but I can't justify ever getting it, unfortunately. T_T

By in United States,

The light system added a substantial price premium. All it did for me was push neat sets like this past my price threshold. This cost about the same as 6955, but it felt like less. I could never justify squandering all that money on lights or sounds that my imagination could supply so much cheaper and more satisfyingly.

I thought that was a shame, because this was a neat-looking set. But 6886 and 6986 looked neater and the price tags fairer, so 6886 and 6955 got my (limited) dollars, 6986 got my lust, and 6781 got to be the wallflower.

By in Belgium,

Loved this set as a kid and still love as much today! Space Police I was an awesome subtheme, as was Blacktron I. I own this space ship 3 times, two times with box (one EU, one US version) and both with plastic inlay :-)

Got this set as a kid.
I'm so happy that I still have it, and the electronics still work perfectly.

By in France,

Best starship to fight against the Blacktron Renegade 6954 . This one was so tempting in 1989, but I was 14y/o, and a little too old for a lego like this for Christmas. Fortunately, during the summer I had the little and beautiful 6886 Galactic Peace Keeper.

I found my SP Striker in a yard sale, in the 2000's with Fabuland. Some elements of the light module were missing, and I rebuilt it completely. The light computer console inside the cockpit is a unique and awesome element.
So in love with all the Space Police 1 starships.

By in United Kingdom,

Picked this up on eBay a year or so back. Haven’t actually dared build it yet for fear that it:

A. Might not be complete/fully operational
B. Be stolen by my 4-year old and share the same fate as Benny’s Spaceship

Weird…. @Huw, any idea why ^that didn’t convert to a link in the original post? I don’t see any typos that would screw it up, and it worked in mine.

Yes, I also have this set and would not build it again for maybe five more years for like fears.

By in United Kingdom,

This was one of the sets my brother and I had, but it didn't stay built as much as 6886. It seemed a bit bigger and clunkier, and suffered from a few disadvantages when being played with. If there wasn't a prison pod in place the module with the battery box could slip out and fall to the floor with a crash, and with the modules separated the two halves seemed a bit awkward and incomplete. Also, the assemblies attached under the first pair of wings were too easy to knock off; in the end we moved them to being on top of the wings.

By in United States,

the only SP 1 set i had. I still use the light up display in some space mocs.

@PurpleDave
Yeah I was slightly baffled by that myself. Wondered if there was teensy tiny formatting thing I’d forgotten

EDIT: Ah and it works when I do it with your username, so this isn’t a me thing. Or is less of a me thing anyway

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Brickalili:
No, the most common reason I see it is because the poster leaves a space between the “@“ and the username. If I’m copy/pasting instead of hitting Reply, I get that a lot on mobile, and I just have to sit there throwing batarangs at it until I can get the cursor in the right spot to delete it (if Steve Jobs were still alive, I’d be very tempted to kick him in the shin).

Anyways, this time I hit “Reply”, so your text was copied exactly as you typed it. It converted when I did it, but not when you did. I copied both the username you posted, and the username from @ElephantKnight’s own post into a text file, and couldn’t see any difference. Either the system won’t allow you to turn that into a link, or it glitched for a moment.

Well, it's a giant target on a bright white outfit. Did I mention it's the cadet/target corps?

Only every time Blacktron 2 is mentioned. You grew up with the original Blacktron, I get it. I discovered Blacktron 2 before Blacktron 1, and I loved it. To me, both are real Blacktron. To you, one is not. And both are things that will never change.

But what about Blacktron 3, as in fan MOCs and official nods such as Rench from SPIII? (Lime green, black, and trans-bright green are usually the color scheme, with the "B" logo)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Murdoch17:
Blacktron 3 was, I believe, a fan-created variant before any of that happened. Trans-orange cockpits were recently available from Mars Mission, while trans-yellow was nowhere to be found. Builders on budgets subbed in trans-orange and called it Blacktron 3. Original Blacktron had a four-color color scheme (black, yellow, trans-yellow, trans-red), but I don't recall what the full B3 color scheme ended up being, besides black and trans-orange. I also don't know how widespread this theme variant was.
