Random set of the day: Ocean Speeder
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 7976 Ocean Speeder, released during 2011. It's one of 5 Atlantis sets produced that year. It contains 54 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$4.99/£3.99.
It's owned by 3,896 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $10.50, or eBay.

I've got nothing. This set is so unremarkable and uninteresting, there's not even something to halfheartedly make fun of. You win some you lose some.
Pretty good as small sets go. This was a source of one of my first diamonds / clear gems. Up until that point, most of the gems I had from collecting Orient Expedition, Harry Potter, Studios, and Indiana Jones were all rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and whatever the yellow gems were.
I thought it was weird how the Atlantis divers switched to yellow suits in the second year. I suppose its more accurate, but it makes them look like their arms are exposed in the deep sea.
Most of the set looks 'ok'...but something about that underwater scooter just makes my head split...don't know if it's the size, or color, or what; but it just looks 'off' in my eyes...
A very nice five dollar set!

Still can’t believe this is what they named the theme TBH, no less the fact that there’s gonna be another set with “Orient” in its name coming this year.
There were a series of commercials called “Dear PlayStation” in 2011 showcasing PlayStation 3 exclusives. I was still stuck on the two and had no plans of switching (especially because I was afraid of Sackboy, more on that another time) so I had the idea of LEGO doing a PS3 exclusive Atlantis game that would show up in one of those. It would come with a light gun peripheral for the harpoon gun (although I don’t remember whether it’d actually be a light gun or like the Wii Zapper) and you’d shoot the enemies with it. I kind of stopped caring about Atlantis after that point (I don’t think the 2011 sets were revealed yet) and the 2011 wave only interested me with the angler fish and the lobster claws which I thought would work well for Mr. Krabs (unlike an EBay listing for Mr. Krabs which used the boxing gloves, a method I hated).

“Oh, man, I found this valuable goblet and some jewels! I’m rich! If only I had a way to get them back to shore!
One of my favorite face prints. It's a shame that it wasn't used outside of Atlantis.
Nothing to say here... except that I miss the time when we got small sets that anyone could have picked up with their loose change like this.
One of the two sets my brother picked up from the second wave of Atlantis. My oldest brother was mildly obsessed with the theme. I only had interest in the figures and the portal rings. It had some nice cheap sets though.
Deep water red snake. All good until I saw that. Strange place for a snake I think.
If this set was released in the 90s as an Aquazone set, it would have had a chrome gold goblet, which is why Aquazone is superior to Atlantis.

Atlantis has shark people, which is why Atlantis is superior to Aquazone.
Happy Shark Week, everyone! Except seals.

Topazes.
The yellow "bare" arm is something that never occurred to me but is a fair point nonetheless. This particular vehicle looks bulky and stocky but in all the wrong ways. Must be a pain in the ass to navigate deep sea currents with this.

“We’ll meet again, Scuba-Man!”
Those propellers and those bare arms!
MEDIC!!
Is there even a speed limit in the Law of the Sea?
I used to own this and sold it. Too much loose clutter.
Then I started to miss it despite its unexceptionalism.
So I bought this again last year.
Happy!
I miss sets like this. Barely available polybags just aren't the same.
oh Atlantis line ...
the atlanteans so cool!
the humans so boring!
I know the comment section is generally unimpressed with this set, but I added it to my wanted list after seeing it here. I loved Atlantis, and wish I'd gotten more of the sets. And as other commenter have mentioned, boxed sets that could be had for less than a tenner were great.

“No Wake Zone”. Otherwise, physics just generally makes Concorde-like speed prohibitively expensive.

Yellow=bare arms neve occurred to me in connection to these divers either, but then I much prefer the green diver suits.

Couldn't disagree more! Small aquascape, diver, treasure and submarine, all at a reasonable price. What is there not to like?
