Random set of the day: Polar Scout
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6586 Polar Scout, released during 2000. It's one of 45 Town sets produced that year. It contains 56 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 2,986 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $40.00, or eBay.

Before anyone says "wow, another vehicle with no means of propulsion," remember: this is a TOY. Use your imagination
Those transparent spiders and scorpions in this theme were very cool (Pun intended.)
This Arctic theme really went nuts with orange, as a design colour, and I was here for it.

Wow, another vehicle with no means of propulsion?

And the next day, the minifig perished on the frozen icepack...
@legodachi: It's propelled by the same thing that steers some Technic vehicles. The Hand of God is a versatile thing.
White metal detector detected.
I remember being somewhat entranced by the Arctic theme as a kid. Ultimately, however, my LEGO experience and that theme never overlapped to any significant degree. Mostly due to the realities that come with being a kid, as well as my general focus being set on other theme types at the time.
I still feel a bit of regret for missing out on those old sets, specifically because I wonder where my childhood mind would have gone with them.
I'd like to conclude this with some sort of wistful comment about time and growing up. Unfortunately, you'll have to come up with your own to imagine here.
Edit: I'd like to add, the box art designs of old played a HUGE part in drawing me into the universe of a given theme. Something sorely lacking nowadays, and one of my few major complaints about how things have changed.

Yet, the graphic design on this one is some major bulls$%t!!
There's no polar bear or cool trans-orange scorpion in the set. If I bought this as a kid, I'd be really pissed!

The lighting does make it look white, but it is unfortunately light grey.
"69" nice.
Iv'e never heard of this "arctic" theme before but it looks nice
@legodachi: See know I would think the motor was under the front slope...although that goes AGAINST what a snowmobile build is now: a motorcycle for the snow...Also/For-the-record: I have a more modern take 60032: Arctic Snowmobile and...snowmobile's really good, trailer is meh...:)
While this is certainly a juniorized set, I can't help but like it a lot. The big chunky pieces are there, but the overall design is quite interesting and funky. It doesn't look stupid or ugly. It's also a good sized set, giving enough stuff to really enjoy the theme's best offering. Certainly of the better sets from this era.

They could at least included the scorpion. Looking at the picture I'ld assume they did.
See that release date…..Year 2000?
I bought this from Toys R Us in Newcastle on December 31st 1999.
OMG how futuristic was that magical ©2000?
I have such nostalgia for this whole original Arctic line of sets... they were all so fun and, well, orange!

Agreed, and in addition, the same piece - in the same color, no less - would go on to give us the Horizon Express (10233), which is certainly a win!

I'm not sure what the issue is here... I have this set, and it definitely came with a polar bear. It's awesome :)
I remember child-me basically decided these guys were the ground force for the few Ice Planet ships I had. Probably just because of their shared use of orange
Another set that appeared in a Lego video game in such a short time, and the second set to have made it's appearance in Lego Racers 2. Arctic theme as a whole was a separate island there and it also appeared in Lego Stunt Rally as a biome on Mister X's island.

Yeah, same here. It is the only set of this series I have and I have the polar bear, scorpion and icey rock.
I remember building this set with an episode of The Raccoons on in the background. Great times.

I don’t have this set, and never did, but do have the polar bear from this range as well as the more recent, less stylised one. Both are in the polar section of my display collection :~)

I wonder why it's not listed on the parts inventory? I would definitely want this set if it came with all that stuff.
Fun fact: orange was supposes to debut with this theme but it was delayed and basic/Freestyle beat it to the punch, as did Star Wars.
And this set comes with an trans orange Fleebnork (sans dish. And they're usually trans neon green). Don't know what that is? Look it up for a look at some classic old-school AFOL business :)
Another fun fact: despite the chunky parts on the back that trailer actually does contain more tools under the lid! If anythink the chunkiness would be realistic.
This was one of my earliest sets. Polar bear! Mysterious space scorpion! It inspired crossover play with the space center theme.
Not only is the part inventory messed up, but there's no means of propulsion.

It's light grey.
Always prefered this Polar Bear to the newer ones. Sure, it's small, but it has more charm to me.
@StyleCounselor:
Bricklink inventory shows the transparent scorpion, both halves of the transparent meteorite, and the polar bear. All four of these molds are probably retired. The scorpion is still in production, but MABS uses a different mold than the polycarbonate they would have been using at this time.
@Binnekamp:
Fleebnork creator Mark Sandlin has been quite clear in the past that they only come in trans-neon-green, and the TNO ones are not Fleebnorks. I suspect this had something to do with the scarcity of the TNG ones vs how common TNO was, combined with the fact that he was trying to sell Fleebnork containment chambers with one Fleebnork each for a rather hefty sum. Personally, while I abide by the idea that they only come in TNG, I did get a few in TNO and dark-grey, as fire is supposed to be the only way to kill them. They work for action scenes where they’re being roasted, and after there’s nothing left but an ashy husk.
A polar bear was al it needed te get my money.
The backpack is also nice.
@StyleCounselor bickset is just not reliable with older sets
@PurpleDave That explains why the trans neon green ones are so expensive! I got one more than ten years ago and haven't looked back since, but I recall them being already significantly pricier than the other variants back then.
That, and it of course came in one flagship set and the orange one came in two smaller sets.
And for the above comments: just go to Bricklink for the inventory. I'd rather even go to Peeron for that than Brickset, as these are lifted directly from Lego itself and are thus prone to being influenced by obnoxious part number changes that are only meaningful for Lego itself or if the mold has actually been visibly changed. And it often only features relatively recent parts over here.
Maybe it's because I often deal with sets from decades ago.
Either way, Brickset is great! Just not that much for inventories compared to alternative sources.
@Binnekamp:
Yeah, any time they popped up on BL, they were gone by the time I saw the notification. It’s hard to exercise a monopoly if you don’t maintain it. Speaking of which:
https://www.maskofdestiny.com/news/big-momma
Seems Mark got sidetracked about 20 years ago, with the whole 3vil thing he had going, and failed to act in a rather large batch that popped up. Just from that one purchase, I ended up with enough to fill a Bohrok pod over half full (most of them are not pictured here).
Ironically, it’s New TNO that’s now more expensive than New TNG.

This is not true at all. This set came with both the scorpion and the polar bear seen on the cover. I don't think any set has ever pictured parts on the front box art that didn't appear in the set. Though, maybe someone has encountered it before?
I have seen prototype parts and wrong printed elements, on the box and instructions, many times.

But, how does it compare with the shadow box version?
@gaiathedj:
While not common, it does happen periodically. Recently, the most notable instance is probably the Mario sets that always show a ghosted image of components you need for the interactive aspect, but which are not included in the box. Of course any blind bag is going to show every possibility, of which you’ll only get one in each packet. I can’t cite specific set numbers, but I think there have been instances where other sets appeared in the deep background, in such a way as to make them obviously not part of the set in your hands, but also making it clear that stuff was meant to be combined together. Usually, though, they limit it to an inset, like the Modulars, Ninjago City, or Jabba’s Palace/Rancor Pit.

If you check the set's inventory at Bricklink, you'll see that it does include both the scorpion and the polar bear.
(Brickset's inventories come from Lego Customer Service, so are often incomplete for older sets because some parts are no longer available.)

In addition to the stuff mentioned above, there are the notorious cases of dishes not having been cropped out from minifigs in Star Wars product images (see set 75183 for an example. Most Star Wars sets had that at the time).
Another case is when sets include alternate parts that make the set look different from the box. Some batches of 7707 looked like this: https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3936033
(Compare the guns between versions).
And the 4766 Graveyard Duel sometimes had alternate heads and capes that were a different color. Just to name two examples.
For official box/instruction images (pre-2022, RIP) there are sometimes other sets in the background, but these are usually clearly renders or cutouts, such as the Titan Tracker (7701 Blade Titan alt model) being visible in the background of the 7700 Stealth Hunter boxart.
The only Arctic Set with both the polar bear and the asteroid. Also the trans orange scorpion and the orange front wedge are kind of rare.
Loved this series! I’ve got this one and the smaller set still sealed…the box art drew me in (as did growing up in Alaska). Always hoped this theme would grow but it has been intermittent at best.
