Review: 41760 Igloo Holiday Adventure

Posted by ,

After some very hot temperatures this week in the US, it felt like an appropriate time to look at the two winter-themed Friends sets being released on September 1. I'm hoping that these sets will be a good addition to my Winter Village later this year.

I'll start by looking at the smaller of the two sets, 41760 Igloo Holiday Adventure, which makes great use of the transparent dome pieces also seen in 41757 Botanical Garden (review forthcoming).

Summary

41760 Igloo Holiday Adventure, 491 pieces.
£44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 | 9.2p/10.2c/10.2c per piece.

Charming winter scene for the new generation of Friends

  • Novel use for the transparent domed pieces
  • Sled dogs!
  • None!

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Inside the box there are four numbered bags, a 8x16 plate, a string used for connecting the two structures in the set, two instruction books and a small sticker sheet. Several of the stickers were used for some gratuitous decorations, so I ended up not applying those.

Minidolls and animals

There are three minidolls in the set - two of the Friends cast, Aliya and Paisley. They're joined by Paisley's little sister, Ella. All three are bundled up for the winter weather. Aliya has a burnt orange coat with beige lapels and trim over a bright pink sweater. She has a blue miniskirt, snug leggings and sturdy boots. Her accessories are a camera and a pair of snowshoes.

This is Ella's second appearance in a set, but the first in this out - a green and teal snowsuit with a zip-up front. She shares the same big blue eyes as Paisley, who is wearing a dark pink jacket with faux fur trim over a yellow cable knit sweater.

The mode of transportation is dog sled, that is pulled by two adorable dogs. I had thought the dogs were the same, but a closer look shows that one has a distinctive mark on its forehead and is smiling, while the other looks to be a little bit older with grey around its muzzle and eyebrows.

The completed model

There are two small builds associated with the model - the first is the aforementioned dog sled - plus who doesn't want more pictures of dogs? - and the other is a sign post indicating that you've made it to the igloo. If the box art wasn't clear, this sign is - the igloo has a clear roof to enable viewing the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.

The set includes the named igloo plus some of the local scenery, in this case a wintry waterfall. The scenes are connected by fairy lights, to enable a Friend to get between them in the dark (on those occasions when the Northern Lights aren't showing).

Snow covered tree surround the waterfall and adjoining pool. I rather like the use of multiple shades of blue to add some depth. A fire pit with warming bench is close by. The sled dogs are not forgotten; they have kibble in a dish.

The waterfall flows into a pool that has some stickered accents. The pool mustn't be too deep, as there are steps leading to the pool to make it available for polar plunges. The need for a nearby fire is all too evident now, especially since the Friends are not equipped with a change of clothes for this set!

The fire is ready, unless you have visitors hogging the benches.

(Note: benchwarming sloths not included in this set).

The igloo is equipped with clear roof panels to allow the occupants to view the Northern Lights while staying warm inside. The clear pieces are shiny enough that you can see my photography light setup reflected in them!

Entrance to the igloo is through a door with a wooden doorknob. More stickers applied to clear pieces show snow accumulating on the window sills. A bin is located near the door for handy storage of snowshoes and other cold weather gear.

The roof opens up, allowing wide access to the igloo.

Inside we see three beds - it's clear from the stickers which bed belongs to which Friend - Paisley has the yellow bed with the musical motif, Aliya has the green bed with a notebook, and Ella has the smaller bed in the corner with a picture of a Yeti. Cookies are next to each bed for the girls to munch on for a Northern Lights viewing snack.

I'm not sure if there's room for three Friends and visitors.

(Note: bed warming sloths not included in this set.)

Overall thoughts

This is a charming set, and I have to wonder if the transparent dome pieces weren't the seed part for this brief. Having an igloo with a clear dome roof is a great idea, and I'm looking forward to see the different ways that LEGO designers use this part in forthcoming sets. It's helpful that this set is less expensive than 41757 in order to get these parts.

Setting that aside, there's a lot of play value in this set. I love the sled dogs, and really appreciate that LEGO made two different ones, as opposed to just duplicating one of them. The waterfall scene is quite nice and portrays a realistic outdoor scene with not a lot of parts. I particularly like the waterfall.

It's nice to meet Paisley's younger sister Ella, and I like that this is a set focused on some of the core Friends, and it provides some continuity - we see Paisley and Aliya together in 41740 Aliya's Room. Clearly these two hang out quite a bit!

Price-wise, I think it's reasonable, and with the shift to a wider range of colours, means that this set could be placed in a Winter Village just about as-is, unlike previous Friends winter-themed sets. I think I'll place mine on the outskirts, though - otherwise the light pollution from the village will ruin the Northern Lights!

Is there any point reviewing 41757-1 at this stage? I would imagine even the most hardcore Friends skeptics will have purchased it by now.

Nice touch with the sled dogs. It’s often that wranglers will use an older one to lead and guide the younger, while the younger contributes with greater strength and endurance.

Also a fan of the large, clear pieces. Reminds me of the giant trans yellow, blue or neon orange space domes in outposts and bases from Blactron, Futuron or Ice Planet 2002..

No change of clothes & a freezing plunge pool?
Where's the sauna?

@MeganL you forgot to mention the price.
Lovely set I love the entire pool section, the iglo and the husky's have to much cute and fuzzyness for me.

Good to see the winter season theme back in Friends. It's been a minute. The dome pieces are okay, though I find myself wishing they'd have some sort of frame around them to better sell the dome illusion. That slightly bothered me with the botanical garden as well. Anyway, looking forward to this.

Friends sets are getting a lot cooler (pun intended) set designs then City lately. City is just the same old same old. They need some inspiration over there and Friends appears to be the place to look.

Now I'm craving some old-fashioned steamed hams.

I'd kind of written this set off, but it seems to have a lot of presence for a set of this size. Love the concept, and execution seems good, so I'll probably end up picking this up at some point.

You mentioned meeting Ella. Do you have any plans to review 41724 Paisley's House?

Thanks for the review!

The LEGO Company: “Igloo!”

Me: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

The sled dog harnesses are going to be popular, though.

@Ridgeheart:
This is a common complaint from people who don’t understand how dog physiology works. If you bring them inside where it’s warm, they’ll shed their thick coat, and freeze to death when you take them out sledding. If you leave them outside, they’ll grow a thick coat in time with the seasons, and shed it when the spring finally comes in mid-May. Huskies and Malamutes are…not those dogs. Oh, those dogs are gonna die.

Lovely review! However, the characterization of the pool being for "polar plunges" seems inaccurate — the product description describes it as a "steam pool", which is reflected in the set design by both the stickered bubbles and the frozen waterfall, which has melted into hanging icicles as it approaches the warmer water below it. The sticker sheet even includes ripples around where the water from the icicles is dripping into the pool below!

The dog sled is a nice build in spite of its simplicity. The dogs don't appear to be a typical sled dog breed like Huskies, Malamutes, or Samoyeds due to having long floppy ears instead of short pointy ones — my best guess is that they are Newfoundlands, which were not bred specifically as sled dogs but are sometimes used for that purpose. I'm curious how the flexible harness piece will be used in the future — it seems very versatile.

The steam pool is beautifully constructed, especially with the SNOTted transparent light blue panel for its water! Given the lack of control knobs/buttons, I suspect it's a natural hot spring rather than an electric hot tub. The surrounding landscape is also quite impressive — very mountainous, but with lots of 90-degree curves to make it look steep and slippery instead of sharp and jagged. And I love the use of Tr. Light Blue Opal pieces for the frozen waterfall!

I am also a huge fan of the snow-covered trees in both of this year's Friends winter holiday sets — similar to those from 2021's forest sets, which I was already fond of, but adding clever color variation to the treetops. The wild mountain berries are another cute detail that adds a nice splash of color to the wintry landscape. Compared to these natural elements, I find the bench and fire pit a bit unremarkable, but as you say, they're fit for purpose as a spot for the Friends to dry off after a dip in the pool.

I'm tickled by how the reflections of your lighting setup on the trees resemble snowflakes! Obviously it's not a feature of the set itself, since most kids won't be playing with it under reflected spotlights, but it feels serendipitous for the review photos! That said, I'm surprised the review doesn't mention the little cave behind the waterfall with a sparkly crystal inside. While that's not a terribly uncommon feature for waterfall caves in Friends and Creator sets, I do find it a nifty hidden detail that's not apparent at first glance.

The igloo itself is an interesting design — of course, it's based on the "glass igloos" at some subarctic resorts rather than a true igloo, but it's a strong representation of such. It makes great use of these new dome panels from last year's LEGO City Space sets, just as this year's Botanical Garden did, and it's extremely clever how the round awning and curved windows seal up the front area around the door! I don't care for the exposed Brick Yellow plates in the back, though. It's at odds with all the snow piled up out front, and seems unnecessary since on the inside, that 6x16 Brick Yellow plate in the back is almost entirely covered up by rugs and furniture.

I like how the beds are arranged around the igloo's center at different angles, and the stickers do a good job showing whose bed is whose — Ella's plush yeti is an especially charming detail! The lava lamp is a neat accessory (although not one I'd necessarily associate with the wintry setting), and I'm also a big fan of the hot chocolate mugs. That said, I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't include any clearer images of the stove/heater/fireplace in your review. This is a somewhat difficult detail to spot even in the official set images, so I would love to see its design in a little more detail.

Nitpicks aside, this is a great review of a very unique and interesting set! Summer-themed sets have been common throughout the Friends theme's lifespan, but winter-themed sets (aside from advent calendars) are a far rarer treat. And this one manages to portray some very different subject matter than many of those before it! Thanks for the great writeup and photos!

The dome and two part style of this set reminds me of that bonus area in Lego Star Wars 2 on Hoth

Which piece is being used for the frozen waterfall? That's one I don't recall having seen before! Very cool; perhaps it will turn up in a wampa ice cave one day… :)

I am glad I'm not the only one who remembers that... That game was the best LEGO Star Wars. Period.

Is it weird that I want to buy this, get rid of the dolls, and add it to my Winter Village layout?

Those trees are excellent and have the perfect color choices to convey the exact northern snow feel.

This set got me thinking about taking a trip to viewing the aurora somewhere, and I stumbled upon this while googling around:

I saw the igloo opening up on the box and I thought it was an explosion play feature, especially since it’s a structure made of ice/glass. Give us explosion play features in Friends sets already!

'Fairy lights'? Clearly Megan isn't a U.S. native.

That ol' dog doesn't want to pull the sled anymore. You can see it in his eyes.

@Aanchir:
NOVA on PBS had an episode about a species of monkey in Japan (Shigaraki prefecture, I believe?) that would submerge up to their necks in natural hot springs surrounded by deep snow. As long as they stay in the water, they’ll be toasty warm. When they leave, much of the water will probably evaporate quickly, due to how warm it is. The rest will probably freeze to their hair, and be somewhat easy to brush off. If they stood around in a sheltered area long enough for the water to cool rather than evaporate, it might be a bit messier.

It's a recolored flame element from the newer City fire sets.

To each their own. It's not how I would have designed it, but then they didn't ask for Ice Planet 2002.

Friends are going from strength to strength. This is why I love this theme!! Still waiting for a Heartlake City themed train though. Please LEGO give us a Friends Train!!

Asking to true question. Sometimes I find it odd how brickset picks sets to review. Still no botanical garden or ninjago markets. Would be good to see their opinion (and a good review).

The umbrella reflections in the igloo is funny. :)

By in United Kingdom,

Definitely a neat-looking set, captures the atmosphere very well: and I like that it includes the two of the new Friends whose designs I like the most, too. (And dogs. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with including dogs!)

I don’t really have any plans to get into Friends (and don’t buy much new Lego these days anyway), but if I did then this looks like it would be a great set to start with. Maybe if I see it on sale reduction somewhere…

That's the only set I've bought this entire year! Here's my two-sentence review of it: It's amazing. Best Lego build experience in years.
