By in Australia,

I was so hoping it would be a Chima set so we could continue the fabulous Chima/Fabuland theorising from yesterday.

But this little guy is just as cool. I remember being somewhat disappointed with Town's offerings, in '96 (and looking back with hindsight, they were preparing us for the crushing horror that was Town Jr), but there were still some little gems, scattered around, and this was one of them. The racing sets (by land or water) were great, this year.

By in New Zealand,

These were cool little jet skis to play around with. As above, these and the small racing cars were good fun.

He totally looks like he's pushing off with one foot, like he's riding one of those old-timey scooters.

I loved all the town water related sets like 6334 that was one of my favourites

Think there's enough stars on this set?

Only 35 left to go...

Another of the sets that gave us Lego Island :D 1996’s turnout is what inspired the buildings in the game, and the jet skis were this design exactly. The buoys too!

By in Canada,

A helmet and a life jacket. This guy is playing it safe compared to so many other operators who fly choppers with rotors right above their skulls or flywheels of cars at their feet (or between their feet!).

But still unsafe for children under 3.

For some reason I REALLY liked this set as a kid. I have no idea what about it appealed to me so much. I'm not saying it's bad or anything, just that I don't know why it stood out to me so much.

Always loved that helmet

For some reason it was impossible to print the stars on the side, but not the 3 on the slope. I wonder how many other parts can boast about having a print and stickers as decoration.

By in Turkey,

It took me three seperate used lots to bring this set to life. One of them even had "1" red plane wing used for the base of this set, just one! And that's all I needed. Printed parts came from another, and the minifigure was from another. Man, do I feel lucky. And now this, RSOTD. This will be a good day...

By in Poland,

One of the coolest head pieces of all time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yeah you kick that buoy, jet-ski minifig dude!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Behold, the flood of countless jet-ski polybags started here. At least it was a novelty back then and thus, very cool!

By in Netherlands,

Very cool set

Town was still perfect in 1996 and this little set is one of the ones examplifying why. And there's something so summer-y about the way these setw were shown in the catalogs, what with all the palm trees, sea, sand etc. :)

Yes, the idyllic nature of the background art in Lego System era has indeed always been soothing to me. I still like to just look at the images of the sets and let my mind wander into this carefree world.

By in United Kingdom,

I must have this set, as have seen the printed parts in a box.....now where?

By in United States,

As someone who was still enjoying Lego (but not for long) in 1996, I have to disagree. 1808 and 1817 and 6615 are refreshing new designs for aircraft. I love all Paradisa sets, it's like a color-themed version of the Leisure subtheme and Town always needed more of that. 6563 continues the smuggling sub-subtheme, which gives the police something to do. 6334 and today's RSOTD add to a nice coastal scene, and today's is perfect to bring with you and swoosh if you're a kid. And of course the crown jewel of the year, 6335 and the other two sets with the new slick wheels.

That's 12 excellent sets out of 24. I have no idea how this compares to any other years, but there's a lot of good choices here for kids or (now) adults. And if we're honest, this year had a lot of promotional (and sometimes limited) releases, so I'm not sure how many of these would qualify as "sets released in 1996" by practical measures.

By in Sweden,

I know people are super into building their whole Lego scenes with bricks, but I may have to do it the way Lego did and add details in other ways. I don't think I have enough baseplates and such to make scenes for Pirates, Town, and Castle, what with needing water and land for all of them, and then the old crater plates for Space. The scenes they made for catalogs and posters are so wonderful. I have a few posters in good condition that I may frame someday for my Lego room.

By in United Kingdom,

oh fantastic, im now 33, ive had this set since 1997, its currently sat on a shelf to my left :D
also set number 6334 has 2 similar jet skis to this one

By in Canada,

Love the colors in this set, the prints/decals, and the Wave Race 64 vibes!!!!

By in Netherlands,

A final thing about this set: I always found it odd that there's a second, green buoy. But on the image it's super far away and blurry!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I guess I got this in early 1996, when the handlebars we're brand new. I also liked the detailed front wedge despite it's odd combination of prints and Stickers...

The minifig was also new for 1996, his name is Indy LeMans.

These type of crafts were famously part of one of Lego Island's racing mini games, which also included the larger Jet Ski Set of 1996.

By in United States,

When we had 6437 the other day, I said that front slope piece was better used in today's RSOTD. Well, I made a Coast Guard-themed 6517 using it, and I was right.
