Random set of the day: Practice Shooting
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 3549 Practice Shooting, released during 2003. It's one of 55 Sports sets produced that year. It contains 17 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$4/£1.99.
It's owned by 885 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $13.90, or eBay.

I don't think a bobblelegs constitutes an aircraft.
I like the basketball sets a lot, but I doubt the longevity of that cardboard backdrop. Can anyone speak to this?

I recently got this in a bulk lot. It still had the cardboard, in reasonable condition. But no basketball. No idea how heavily it was played with though.
The RPotD came from 75547 Minion Pilot in Training, the RMotD came from 1191 Try Bird, and now this. I'm picking up a theme here, a different one than what @PurpleDave alludes to. Does nobody actually know how to do their jobs here?
I kind of appreciated the urban feel to some of these sets, particularly the street-themed basketball sets. It brought to mind pictures of kids in the inner city, playing on makeshift courts in alleys and unused thoroughfares. I suppose that's a very idealised way of looking at it (I had a big backyard and a lot of beaches, as a kid, but I was a nerd and had my nose in books most of the time), but I liked the idea of it.
Yeesh, what kind of crosshair system is this? Could have a headshot at one of those intersections though...
Probably a bit too dark. Uhhh...
I bet that even at this distance, he still missed the shot. Practice makes perfect only applies if you have some measure of talent.
This set would have been better if BrickArms had been included

Oh my gosh, you’re right! They’re all yellow! Oh, man, Stuart is gonna start suckin’ on these guys’ noggins any second now…
Got this one from Dollar Tree back in the day. So much nostalgia even though I've never been a sportsball plan. Started MOCing a full diorama of this, box and all. should finish that.
Is there some perspective thing going on here or is that net really that huge?
I was never a fan of basketball sets because of those wierd expressions on their faces.
I refuse to believe that this came out 20 years ago.
The photo shopping of the sidewalk in the bottom left corner needs some AI to improve on the human attempt. The plate that holds the cardboard only appeared in this set, I just wonder if the cardboard could take the weight of the ring durchmesser without bending.
At the start of this year I bought @3548 after having owned it years before. It came with another set I bought in 2007. It had a hinged technic axle that allows you to make a slam dunk.
At first glance this set looks worse. Even with images that actually show you the assembly under the minifig it doesn't impress much, as that's just a dark grey 2x4 with two jumpers in the middle to hold the minifig and two 1x2s at the edges.
But this one comes with the spring legs. So in a sense it's just as functional. It just... looks more boring. 3548 also has a violet base while this one's just dark grey... and that wall has nothing on the drawing of minifigs in a stadium.
Of course, both aren't great XD
@Brickalili nope, the net really is that huge. It's sold (softer) plastic and needs to recieve those not insignificant balls. And here it's mounted on a piece of cardboard. It looks better on the proper sets, although it's still big.
Interestingly, he reuses the Drome Racers face for Red Bullet.
Right in time for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which begins tomorrow!!
(In Philippines & Japan).
GO AUSSIE BOOMERS!!!
Side note, I recently picked up a complete Ultimate NBA Arena LEGO bball set. (3433) in great condition, at a sharp price!!
Comes with Kobe, Shaq, Iverson and various other NBA All-Star minifigures!
It’s one of my favourite sets, and it’s playable!
My daughter loves flinging the basketballs at the hoops!
I saw the title "Practice Shooting" and got really worried

In my Aquaman Vs 2 (The Sea-Quel) series of vignettes, Aquaman Vs Seaworld consists of Aquaman in an orca costume leaping through one of these rims mounted vertically. It really is that huge. But, consider that it’s not the minifigs who are playing basketball, here. It’s the kids who are using minifigs to play basketball. The game can’t be so incredibly difficult that you need a tuned robot taking the shots to have even a remote chance of scoring a basket.

You aren't the only one...
I love this set and I still have it all these years later. Cardboard still looks great and functions perfectly.

Always.

It really is that huge..."
If you want to get NBA-technical, the standard hoops are wide enough for an average person's width to comfortably go through, so proportionally they are not *that* far off.
Is there a reason that the background is cardboard, rather than brick-built?

It's cheaper. Remember: they are trying to hit a price-point. Only very, very rarely do they exceed the allotted price for a set.
@oukexergon:
That’s going to depend on the person. I think I tried once, when I was young. The rim is 18” across, and that’s about how wide my shoulders are. I seem to remember needing to raise one arm above my head so I only needed to fit one shoulder through at a time.

This guy makes it look easy.
Anyways, a LEGO rim is big enough I think you can easily fit two through simultaneously. Try doing that with a regulation rim in real life.
