LEGO to unveil something special this Friday

Posted by ,

LEGO has tweeted (and posted to Instagram and Facebook) an image of a countdown stating that something exciting will be revealed this coming Friday. They've also emphasised that this is "HUGE" news, so maybe that's a hint? Maybe tomorrow we'll get another update with the countdown.

What do you think this reveal will be? As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Spoiler alert: Continue reading (or not) for a spoiler...

Update: Looks like Bricklover2013 in the comments found out that the LEGO post on Google+ includes the same photo, but if you look at the URL to the image (right click > open image), you'll see "Bionicle-4-new.jpg". I think that more or less spoils the surprise, but I'll keep updating this post anyway each time we get a new teaser image.

Update 17 September: Two days remaining! It still has the 6 main colours like the last one featured. No hints in the file name this time though.

Bionicle?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This makes me wonder if this has to do with rumors we have already heard about new lines that are coming, or is this something entirely new that nobody knows about.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Marvel Super Heroes - Fantastic Four!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Google Fantastic Four sign images and it is exactly that!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's not the Fantastic Four sign- it's just an old-timey movie countdown.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My 7 year old, when I showed him this article said "well if it is going to be massive, then it's the Baxter building". (Which is apparently the fantastic four building) If he is right, I am going to get him to choose my next lottery numbers!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

A real coup would be an entirely new theme of neo or classic space in cooperation with Peter Reid. But unfortunately that will be just a dream...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Forget that, I see what you mean by the countdown...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Continuing the movie theme... Jurassic World?

Gravatar
By in Norway,

its not a fantastic four logo. its a movie/tv countdown thing. And the colors are jsut the basic colors.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's fun guessing though isn't it....

Gravatar
By in Poland,

^^^ Well, it looks a bit like swastika... So maybe WWII :)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I hope it's the official Slave 1 announcement with designer video, or the 2015 Modular Building

Gravatar
By in Poland,

^ I was joking

Gravatar
By in United States,

I bet it's Bionicle, I know we've already heard about it, but Those were leaks or something, right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Modular Detective Agency

Gravatar
By in United States,

lego avengers 2 sets? or lego batman 2 sets?

Gravatar
By in Poland,

^^^ But they know that we know, so where is surprise?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Microsoft has just paid $2.5bn for Minecraft, Classic space would be great and the colour bars but look right but maybe they would have put green last. Fantastic Four seems very unlikely from what we know.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Maybe it's not a set? Maybe they bought Mega Bloks or something?

Gravatar
By in United States,

TLG knows what we already know about, regarding sets and series that were leaked ahead of schedule. They would not do something like this countdown for something that they KNOW we already know. Does that make sense?

Anyhow, by my logic, this will not be about anything Minecraft, or Detective Agency, or Jurassic World, or... That would be the biggest let down ever.

I'm leaning towards the Space Classic idea. TLG just went back to Castle, next year they are going back to Pirates, Space would be the third leg of that trifecta!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Clearly this announcement transcends the News of a single model. This tweet is designed to draw in, not just Lego fans, but any who uses social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It wouldn't be a Fantastic Four announcement, not only because the "4 symbol" represents a countdown, but that that announcement would not necessitate this kind of teaser. I reckon, it is not a con-incidence that this "reveal" is happening whilst the Lego Ideas Winter Review is about to be announced. A new license maybe?

Gravatar
By in United States,

maybe the pirates line

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hoping it is something for the Fantastic Four. The reboot movie comes out next Summer.........

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Re-release of 10179....?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bodybomb3: That's a really good point. There's a good chance it could be something from LEGO Ideas' last review phase. If it's Doctor Who that'd be great news!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Isn't there a rumor of a huge "Death Star Replacement" set come January? Of course that does not necessarily mean SW? They have snuck new licences past us in the past, such as TMNT. I'm not sure if there are any licences out there that would even qualify as huge? (At least not many kid friendly ones?) Star Trek or Power Rangers are the only things that leap immediately to mind.

Those colors kind of leave me hoping for a giant D2C Space Base.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I'm guessing Doctor Who. That's been long requested, so it would be big news...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@parsom, Mattel just bought Megabloks a few months ago. I can't see Lego buying Mattel. Hasbro maybe, but that would be earthshaking in the business news, not a NYCC event.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm thinking Classic space. Is there any significance in the top right 30565 Plate 4X4, 1/4 Circle being dark grey? I'm just looking at all the angles...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I guess: Doctor Who, Classic or Jurassic World. ;-)

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

I’ve read somewhere (I just can’t remember now, if it was on this site, forum or where...) rumors about new theme- LEGO Classic/s I believe. I have immediately started thinking about something like the Bionicle Stars- you know, remakes of the most popular sets in Lego history (not just Bionicle this time)- and this looks pretty much like it to me. I do not want to start any false sensations, though.
We have to be patient...
Oh, and that ’4’ means that four days are remaining to the announcement, not the Fantastic Four, IMO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who knows! It could be a new unique service, like a custom mini figure printing service

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Time for Ideas verdict is coming and this is TV/movie testing pattern, so maybe DW is good guess. Personally - I hope not. I prefer birds. There is too much minifigures based/licensed sets.

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

^^^Oh, so I guess that I was wrong.....but who knows... :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Please, Please, Please, let it be a UCS Minas Tirith. :)
With a Third wave of LOTR.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Or they have a licence for the old TV space series Thunderbirds .....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Judging by the old fashioned TV test pattern ... I think they are about to announce a Doctor Who licence. It is certainly a big enough franchise to warrant a countdown.
I do not believe Classic Space is appealing enough for kids these days. My nephew looks at my old sets and thinks they look old and stupid. I realise any new sets would be modern. He doesn't even like Benny's spaceship, he prefers the Star Wars ships.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I sure hope DW is not announced like this. After the last Idea release fiasco the last thing I need is yet that many more people wanting my DW sets and stock being depleted before I can order one let alone 3.

Minecraft is the obvious one.
Jurassic park seems 'huge'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a movie countdown so, it's probably LEGO Movie 2 news. ??? No?

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I know, I know! They're going to announce, that they give me 10000$ for LEGO.com shopping

Gravatar
By in Italy,

A new type of classic brick??? Another Legoland Park?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bodybomb3: I wouldn't say that it couldn't be a single set. The lead-up to the Exo-Suit was pretty heavy on social media presence as well, with teasers and so forth.

On the other hand, perhaps it is a CS reboot? Now that Galaxy Squad is done, TLG needs a Space theme to fill the void. Benny proved to be really popular with kids as well as AFOLs, and, as I already mentioned, this kind of teaser reminds me a lot of the Exo-Suit release. I guess we'll know soon enough.

Gravatar
By in Gibraltar,

its either the lego disney, Lego elves or the return of Bionicle.... as per the well known link thats been doing the rounds...

Gravatar
By in United States,

While there are several possibilities that are sound, my bet is on official announcement of Jurassic World. "Huge" announcement.....dinosaur-huge. So far, Lego hasn't disappointed me at all with what's coming next year. I was hoping for more OT stuff in the Star Wars line but with Slave 1 coming, i can accept it. Hopefully the replacement for the Death Star will be Cloud City. Fingers crossed! DC line looks great. Marvel...well i guess we'll have to wait and see what's in store. New modular, some interesting Creator sets.....i'm stoked for whatever they have up their sleeves! :)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The next modular for 2015? Another UCS Star Wars set? Bionicle? More Simpsons sets? Return of Classic Space? Or another new license we don't know about? I'm excited already! ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

BIONICLE !!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully it isn't something that hasn't been leaked already!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I expect it'll be related to the rumor that the Lego Salt and Pepper shakers will be available in extra colours from 2017.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting that the "4" is not brick-built. I assume the 3, 2, and 1 will not be either.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO IPO stock going public? I'd be the first to buy stock in them. $$$$$ But I know thats not the big announcement.
I'd love to see a new Modular for the Holidays. A Hospital or a Post Office would be nice.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I think its the next modular building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let's see, Friday will be 9/19/2014. Does that mean anything?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The winner of the last ideas creation, and an announcement that the exo suit is back in stock

Gravatar
By in United States,

The six colours also correspond to the six basic BIONICLE Toa colours (Red=Tahu Green=Lewa Blue=Gali Black=Onua White=Kopaka) except for the yellow....

Gravatar
By in Poland,

@ MOCDoc
Oh yes, that mean that I have back to work. But how do they know that?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Bionicle or a new Movie

Gravatar
By in United States,

@lego613master: That's a good observation. I don't see brown though, and in 2006, yellow became the main color in a toa to replace brown. Who knows, it could be Bionicle!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Disney is buying LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i would be happy with a pimped up 4x4 truck with XL motors , lots of lights and a a wordwide release :) disgusting 41999 prices out there

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Bionicle? It is so huge like news that Ricky Martin is a gay.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I doubt it's Dr Who, because there would be teasers the other way too (from BBC).

As it's a classic style movie countdown, my money would be on something to do with The Lego Movie - maybe a game / Lego Movie Studio type thing, where TLG release a whole movie studio and apps to help you film brick movies?

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Monorail... :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

9/19 is also Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to say that TLG would not care if it were something that was leaked or not. They would have been planning this for months before anything was leaked, and just because something was leaked, doesn't justify throwing away months of planning a special unveiling of something. They're not going to just write off all the money they spent planning this because it was leaked.

Anyone else having to take longer than they really should be taking to have to figure out what DW and CS mean? I'm assuming Dr. Who and Classic Space? Maybe I'll just start calling LEGO "L".

With the continued disintegration of our language, maybe all of this build up is leading to TLG announcing that "Legos" is an acceptable name for the toy.

*shudders at the thought*

Gravatar
By in United States,

My guess is the announcement of The Lego Movie sequel.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

someone on suggested 5..4..3..2..1 thunderbirds are go
TB1 and 2 in lego would be cool but i cant see it happening

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

New Millennium Falcon UCS

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe it is Fantastic Four. Someone pointed out how the 4 in the image isn't brick built. Well it also happens to be transparent, but only in one section. Why make the number only partially transparent? This number could be Invisible Woman themed. Tomorrow maybe the 3 is just a little stretchy. It's possible, right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I personally think it's either Bionicle or Doctor Who.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@markarm919
Good point. Although Lego already revealed the upcoming Pirates theme news.

Honestly, I'm hoping for a big or new Marvel set, or a UCS Star Wars set, although I'd love to see a new modular. Marvel has not had an exclusive set yet, with the highest set being priced $75, and DC already getting two Lego Exclusives. Either way, I can't wait. Fingers crossed for Fantastic Four, fingers crossed for Fantastic Four. Come on Marvel.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Blimey, this is a hot topic, 80 comments in 2 hours...

^^^ I can neither confirm nor deny that one :-)

My money is on Doctor Who, although it could be Bionicle. Those that are saying that LEGO won't make a fuss about revealing that because 'we' already know: don't forget that 'we' are a very small minority of LEGO fans given that LEGO has 10 million Facebook likes, and to most of them it will be news.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think movie making software or apps that you can use to animate Lego

Gravatar
By in Canada,

^ That's a very good point - not everybody is as crazy as "us" in terms of finding out new themes, announcements, sets, etc.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ They kind of already have that.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Has TLG gained a license to build sets for Gerry Anderson's THUNDERBIRDS? That's my first thought when I saw the "4" as a countdown... Or maybe it's a new modular set since the Emporium seems due for retirement? Or maybe a new Expert train for 2015?

Whatever the case, the speculation sure is fun!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm thinking that this might be a "Studios" reboot, given the "film" look to it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it's whatever the new LEGO Ideas set is, and the tv countdown slate suggests Dr. Who or (less likely) The Big Bang Theory. More likely Dr. Who because of the retro look of the slate. The decision of the next set is due, and I think the LEGO Group would not undercut the announcement of the new LEGO Ideas set with this type of hoopla for something else. Also the teasy internet media approach is similar to how they launched the Exo-Suit this summer, so I think it's the same team.

I would find it unlikely that they would announce the Fantastic Four in such a fashion, because who besides AFOL and Marvel fans even consider the FF overdue for sets?

I don't think they would use LEGO system bricks for a Bionicle announcement either.

Jurassic Park is something they would tease more specifically and probably not until after we saw the first trailer for the film, which I don't think is due this week. They wouldn't go ahead of the marketing for the film.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Either the licence for the new star wars film released in 2015 or jurassic world also released in 2015 .

Gravatar
By in United States,

It could probably be the anouncing of the rumored LEGO Ninjago movie, but I doubt it. But I do hope that it is Classic Space with the re-release of the old styled helmet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The one bit of speculation I'm doubting the most currently is Fantastic Four. I feel like that would be something more appropriate to be revealed at New York Comic Con, since LEGO is seemingly going to announce something there too since they gave various communities tickets to give away. I guess Doctor Who is also something that'd fit into Comic Con just as well, but I feel like a LEGO Ideas set is better announced online in a manner like this, as the Exo Suit was earlier this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know what would make me really happy? Lego City: Undercover getting ported to Xbox One.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I feel like it's almost certainly Bionicle, but if not it's probably some other new theme

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Monorail?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego is buying Scotland following the independence vote on the 18th?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

At first I too was thinking movie announcement but I doubt that is the case. There'd be no point in hyping this up if weren't completely new (or at least unseen, such as the Exo-suit) or available for the masses shortly after its announcement.

Following those lines it can't be a movie, because we'd either know about it by now, or it would be two years before we'd see it in theatres. (Unless it is straight to video/Netflix).

My current guess based on the clues provided is a very large set (perhaps surpassing the Taj Mahal in piece count or the Falcon in size) of an 'exciting' subject... I dare not venture a proper guess just yet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Bricklover2013: Wow! Nice find on that; looks like LEGO may have accidentally spoiled it. I'm going to update the article to point this out.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

@ joezilch
And they starting Braveheart theme

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Well i'd LOVE a Space reboot so that i can get into the old genre with some more accessible new sets. I mean, i may collect old sets, but some cheaper new-(old-)Space sets that AREN'T Alien Conquest or Galaxy Squad and contain some nice trans-yellow window bricks are very welcome.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well the fun looks like it could be over, and its a let down never mind lots of good sets this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Bricklover2013: good find, that's got to be it. Remember, just because we all knew about Bionicles reboot next year, many others do not. So it will be news for them (and official news for us).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe they put Bionicle in the URL to fool us... :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

that would be nice i would like to see other sets :)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Bricklover2013: Good find!

@MOCDoc: More likely the TLG employee that uploaded the image didn't realize that Google wouldn't give it a gibberish file name like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook did.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I swear, Bionicle isn't big news. To be honest it's a boring as heck theme. I WANT SPACE.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ugh Bionicle, this really isn't a big deal to me though it's a hyping announcement for those non forum-AFOL fans out there. In a parallel universe Thunderbirds Lego however...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@WoutStopmotion: If I'd had to list LEGO themes that are boring, BIONICLE definitely wouldn't be among them...and that's considering both sets and story.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So now that LEGO's accidentally confirmed Bionicle 2015 for the 10th or so time, it makes me wonder what big announcement LEGO has planned for New York Comic Con...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@Gatanui

Well, i've just never been a big fan of it. i guess.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^^ Uhhhh... Classic Space? (:

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like it's BIONICLE then. I wonder if the colours were indeed meant to correspond with Toa? Doesn't solve the mystery of the yellow tile though?

EDITS BELOW

@Meiko vv
Sorry, I missed that. True, very true! That leaves no room for doubt in my mind!

Another curious thing, then: Classic Spacemen consist of the same colours as do the six main BIONICLE colours. Slightly interesting! Perhaps TLG 'accidentally' came across this fact, and included those colours to throw us off the right track?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Venunder I agree with you I hope it is an Ultimate collector series Minas Tirith!

I also think this could be UCS Millenium Falcon or the announcement of the next lego ideas project hopefully not doctor who.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@lego613master: Like I said, LEGO replaced brown with yellow in Bionicle's six colour schemes in 2006 and on. Yellow will probably be Pohatu's colour rather than brown like he was originally.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope its an announcement that they've picked up doctor who and are going to do a line of sets for the show. If they played their cards right they could do a line each year to publicise the current series of that year and in the early part of the year they could do a line that focusses on the doctors before 12. That would be good. However if they are starting with one range of sets. I think 13 one from each doctor would be a good idea and each set could have a famous sequence from that doctor's era and a couple of enemies and companions alongside the doctor to pay tribute to that era. 13 sets ranging in price. Smallest being Capaldi's Tardis exterior with him Clara and two enemies from series 8 then go up in price and size but In random order.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

well i think that ti could be a new ucs set like a new falcon or even the rumored cloud city for 2015. The official ucs slave 1 video, or also it could be a new ideas set, new modular, simspsons, monorail, a new ucs pirate ship etc etc

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Maybe it could be official news of the upcoming Jurassic Park/World line in 2015?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bionicle = disappointed
UCS Millennium Falcon is the only thing I think would warrant a dramatic, days-long countdown. I think it would sell like gangbusters.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope it's the official non-preliminary pics of LEGO Star Wars 2015

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope it is not Bionicle that would be very anticlimactic...

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's Bionicle returning in 2015.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it's a Lego model of the Titanic.
That would be, without a doubt, the most successful set ever. Guaranteed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope that it's a big announcement like Classic Space or Doctor Who, and not something that we already know about like Bionicle or Jurassic World.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My guess is that it's either the Lego movie 2 or Doctor who. However, what I want it to be is just one, incredibly huge Lego set, like twice as big as the Taj Mahal (which is the biggest Lego set ever at 5922 pieces)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Guys, quit the speculation. We already know that it will be BIONICLE. ;-)

Anyway, I'm very hyped. These are going to be the four longest days of my life... press release? Confirmation on reboot or continuation? Full high-quality set images? God, please have all that come on Friday. And what's more, it makes the Classic LEGO Sets article I wrote for Huw this week even more timely...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love seeing the collective "awwww :(" from AFOLs while us Cosnstraction Fans are in fervor over this. Hate all you want, but Bionicle saved Lego's butt when they were about to go under, don't forget that! The fact Lego is bringing it back, and not just rebranding it to something else like they've done with most other themes says something to. You guys may not like bionicle, and that's fine, but don't sit there and call it boring or not a big deal. Its a huge deal to some of us alright. I'm tired of non-constraction fans disregarding and even disrespecting Bionicle and HF for simply being different. Its more significant than you give it credit for, if it wasn't, Lego wouldn't be BRINGING IT BACK.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was never a Bionicle fan, so this is pretty 'meh' for me if so. I'd REALLY like for it to be a Fantastic Four Baxter Building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm really surprised at the amount of people who think Dr. Who would become a whole THEME. One set, absolutely, but a theme?

If Harry Potter, a worldwide sensation targeting ages 7-18ish children (the toy playing age) that was as enormous as it was, ultimately wasn't able to justify maintaining it's theme - how do you think a niche TV show targeting the 15-30 crowd (the NOT toy playing age) would be able to justify a theme?

I've continued to say this every time it comes up - the whole Dr. Who on Ideas thing is suspicious, I feel like people who don't work at Lego know more than they're letting on. Otherwise, the Dr. Who hype doesn't make much sense.

Gravatar
By in United States,

NYCC is probably the Slave 1 reveal. They generally like Star Wars reveals for that show and typically show off UCS do they not?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh and for all the Fantastic Four wishes, I hate to dash your hopes, but Marvel has placed an absolute moratorium on any and all FF merchandising until well after Fox's upcoming (and horrid looking) movie. They want nothing on shelves that will support Fox's movie or will associate their brand with it. They are even canceling the comics for the duration. There is something of a feud between the President of Marvel and the President of Fox. So there will be no FF Lego in any form for the foreseeable future.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^at Faefrost. That is just a rumor and my not actually hold because xmen is also a Fox property and we got one set out of it with 76022. Lego may be able to do one fantastic four set since the characters are already licensed due to the video games.

As for Bionicle...zzzzzzz....
I suspect Bionicle is cheap and easy to kit so promoting a cartoon and a few animated features help tow the line on profit over substance.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh that's disappointing, in a way. I'm hyped for bionicle, but that's the first thing i thought when i saw the announcement.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I am thinking a new LEGOland park somewhere. That is pretty 'huge'.
Hopefully in Europe ??.

Probobly wrong.
Anyway, I think the huge thing fot TLG does not correspond with a huge thing for the AFOL community.
So I am counting on a litte bit of a dissapointment.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

i hope its not bionicle. for me is complete pass. i hope it will be something for afol community like a big ucs or a retro theme re release or something like that

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A) what's so 'big' about Bionicle that it would be so hyped? It's a minority theme that may well have a lot of fans but it's not a 'big' theme

B) Wouldn't LEGO have the intellect to appreciate that folk know how to identify where web images are stored so they'd store a release image somewhere to throw folk 'off the scent' if the news really is that 'big' and secret?

C) We already know Bionicle is coming so it doesn't need a countdown to announcement

D) I hope it's something more exciting than Bionicle!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Is that a real Lego part in the hole of the four? Looks horrible to step on

Gravatar
By in United States,

@DanRSL "A niche TV show targeting the 15-30 crowd (the NOT toy playing age) would be able to justify a theme?"
That doesn't sound like Doctor Who to me. Doctor Who is loved by many children younger than fifteen, and many adults over thirty. If you don't believe me, there are many who can back me up. And it's certainly marketed to a wide age-range. Why else would Character Building have held the construction-toy rights for eight years? Why are there Doctor Who trading cards, and toy Sonic Screwdrivers?
Niche also seems a strange way of describing it. Oddball, certainly, but given its global popularity, most definitely not niche.

Also, the Harry Potter line did fairly well, given that the only years with a Harry Potter movie for which there was no line of sets were 2007 and 2009. And 2007 still had one large set. Even 2003, a year in which no Harry Potter movie was released, had two sets.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

^It looks like that's fixed now :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^To be fair, if it is Bionicle, we've all known about that for a looooong time, at least we who frequent the Brickset comments sections have. Spoiling the fun of the countdown seems like an act of mercy compared to 4 days of speculation and excitement with Doctor Who, a Classic Space reboot, and other tantalising rumours flying around being ended with surely the dampest of all damp squibs ever! :P

(Plus, it's after the break so you'd only see the spoiler by ignoring the spoiler alert and clicking in, and you'd have seen it all over the comments anyway. Seems a good call to me.)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No point even discussing it. It's clearly the announcement of the third wave of LotR and a LotR UCS set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

We'll know it's Doctor Who if the countdown goes 4, 2, 3, 1. After all, time isn't always linear when the Doctor's around.
(Seriously, though, I'll be shocked if it isn't Bionicle.)

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

If TLG read this comment section surely they're going to change the name of tomorrow's picture to drwho-3-new.jpg and the day after to jurassic-2-new.jpg :-)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@ArielHairRaph - to me, the '4' looks like it has been superimposed digitally - it's black with a clear border, and if you look at the right-hand vertical straight black of the '4', it's translucent too (as you can see the satellite dish through it) - just doesn't look real.
Not that it's all that relevant :o)

By in Australia,

I would like it if it was a Fantastic Four announcement, but with all the Marvel and DC characters already, that would hardly seem worth the fanfare of a huge deal.

It's probably Bionicle. I never much cared for Bionicle, I'm sorry to say, so this will probably be 'eh'.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I *think* Wired may have just broken an embargo on this.

Don't want to link to spoilers, but easy enough to find.

Gravatar
By in United States,

To those still crying foul that it could be something that has already leaked, I hope you realize that TLG doesn't want things to be leaked. If it were Fantastic Four or Dr. Who, those would have been leaked by now too. If you visit fan sites, there's very little chance that of surprises.

I'm not a big fan of Bionicle. I bought only the first wave of figures way back in the day. Bionicle is a huge deal. It was one of the first LEGO themes to feature an elaborate story behind it. It ran for years. It may be something that (some) AFOLs turn their noses up at, but the kids loved it and like it or not the kids are were the money for LEGO comes from.

A Dr. Who Ideas set that will have a run of, what, 10000 sets will not be as huge as the Bionicle theme reboot that will feature dozens of sets that each have a production run of way more than 10000 sets. Bionicle will most likely feature movies, comics, clothing and gear, possibly a large online game platform and video games. It may not be "huge" to AFOLs, LEGO's smallest audience, but it is a big deal to the brand.

It may have been leaked, but I applaud LEGO for getting creative with their marketing for the official publicity release of Bionicle (if that's what's going to be revealed, which I do believe it is).

I've read the wired article and hope it's not that.

My idea of HUGE news would be they are going to stop producing stickers and all bricks will be printed.........Ahhhhhh.........

Do I missed something? What will be October 5th? Bionicle is coming?

By in United Kingdom,

I don't mean to sound negative, but the announcement of Bionicle is a massive let down, if that's the case. I never had any, but even out of my dark ages I don't understand the appeal. They're no different to Hero Factory or other Ultra Builds and other than creative piece use from some Lego mocs I've seen, you can't do a great deal with them to incorporate them in general Lego displays. I thought Hero Factory was severely disappointing to many that I've read on forums, etc so I am surprised that anyone gives a hoot that Bioncle is returning. Am I missing something perhaps? I know they made some films - are the stories good? Maybe I would like it....

I think it could be the 2015 CHIMA wave. The set names and descriptions are on the LEGO CHIMA forum in the LEGO message boards in a topic called "2015 SET PICTURES!!!". See for yourselves.

By in Spain,

sorry lego but if its bionicle its going to be a massive let down. all the countdown and people hoping a "big" "huge"set it difinitely must to be a very sppecial set or new theme or re release or something special not just a bionicle

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@bezley: A lot of people like it for the story, yes. It was one of the very first LEGO themes to have an in-depth, character-driven storyline. The sets are also well-loved (and Hero Factory has not been nearly so much of a letdown as you might think — there are quite a number of Hero Factory fans; they just often tend to get drowned out by bitter BIONICLE fans or LEGO fans who couldn't give a hoot about the constraction category in general).

@interceptor: BIONICLE is tremendously special to a lot of people. If you're not one of those people, tough luck. But not every announcement should have to appeal to all LEGO fans (and they never do).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I must say that in my opinion this (Bionicle) isn't HUGE news. I understand it might be for some, but for me that would be a big let down, given that they're trying to get people excited about something. Let's wait for the next picture to see if it gives anything away.

By in United States,

Man. I'm not really a huge fan of Bionicle at all. I reallly don't like the custom pieces they make for every set. Honestly, I was piecing together a theory myself. I heard from a friend that the 3DS demo for Super Smash Bros comes out Friday, and there is an elves them coming out next year, and thought maybe Lego was launching Legend of Zelda.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Aegis2000: Based on some pics, the new BIONICLE will have fewer of those "custom pieces for every set" than the original theme. In fact, ever since 2011, all constraction themes have stuck to more or less the same building system, introducing new pieces at a much steadier pace.

It's one of the things I love about the Character and Creature Building System, as it's called... it's actually much more of a "system" than the myriad old-school BIONICLE parts with their many disparate textures and hyper-specialized designs. It's also one of the things a lot of old-school BIONICLE fans HATE about the CCBS, because they think the sets "all look the same"... ironic, since that's one of the main criticisms other AFOLs had about BIONICLE sets for years.

As I see it, nowadays, the constraction sets' actual builds and how they use existing parts in new ways are generally what set them apart from one another, not just their colors or how many new and elaborate pieces they can introduce. Which I think most LEGO fans can agree is how it should be.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm crossing my fingers that it's going to be Doctor Who! It would certainly be big news for Lego to produce Doctor Who sets, as Doctor Who has a growing fanbase in both the UK and America. Whatever it is, as long as it's NOT Bionicle (I can't stand those giant robot building sets), I'm excited.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@yuffie: I've been wondering that too. Either they're really late, or they're just not going to upload one for today. That's kind of a disappointment, but at least we still know we should be getting something on Friday...

Let the masses speak:

On the LEGO Facebook page, a mention of Bionicle has 107 likes, and a mention of Dr. Who has 25 likes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just a thought partially related to this conversation-

I noticed above a few people have mentioned that it couldn't be a Fantastic Four or DW announcement, since no leaks have been seen of either theme. That brings to light a semi-interesting fact: As far as I know, the results of CUUSOO/Ideas projects have never actually been leaked before the fact. An interesting thought! Still means DW could be in the making (although I'm convinced it's BIONICLE).

Gravatar
By in United States,

@lego613master: There has also been the rumoured Super Cars theme that we haven't seen leaked pictures of yet, and people on Eurobricks have been saying it's a Top Gear theme (I don't know if this is true or not), but that could also be something we could see being revealed at New York Comic Con.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Whatever happens (saying that, we know exactly what is going to happen) I still wouldn't class a rejuvenation of Bionicle as a 'brand new theme for 2015'. When film makers do remakes (and they do a lot nowadays) they don't say it's a brand new concept or story, just admitting outright that it is a remake, or occasionally sidestepping the subject and calling it a 'sidequel' for example. I'm fully aware films are different to toys but that's just one comparison.

I was the ideal target audience age when Bionicle came out (maybe slightly older), and I inevitably got a couple of Bionicle presents, but I was never very interested at the time, nor in future years. But I'll admit it takes something to prise me away from SW, castle and pirates and a lot of the 'please let it happen' suggestions here could do just that

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Maybe it is four different themes to be revealed:
-Bionicle;
-Fantastic Four;
-Jurassic Park;
-Lord of the Rings.

Gravatar

It's about time they announce they are ceasing the printing of stickers and only using printed bricks from now on! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Since it seems pretty much like this is definitely a Bionicle reveal . . . I have to ask the question I've been wondering for a long time . . . what is the difference between Bionicle and Hero Factory? I'm clearly not a fan of either, so I can't really distinguish one from the other in any sort of discernible way that would warrant a big reveal from Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My guess is an Avengers theme. The "Avengers" haven't had many sets, just seems to be the individual members. The movie countdown along with Avengers: Age of Ultron being released next year, seem to be a bit of a coincidence. The colors on the top right may coincide with the characters; Ironman=red, Hulk=green, Captain America=blue, Thor=yellow, and Black Widow=black.

I agree the rerelease of Bionicle doesn't seem to be big enough to warrant this kind of publicity. I had a few Bionicles, but never really got into them. However, knowing that Bionicle helped bring Lego back from ruin, I can appreciate them wanting to give a rerelease a big campaign.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bionicle used a different building system.
Also, while Hero Factory has a simple storyline about robots fighting bad robots, Bionicle has a long, complicated, somewhat confusing storyline about semi-organic creatures. Bionicle is also a bit darker than HF.
Personally, I am not a fan of constraction, but Hero Factory at least feels like lego, and promotes the idea of creativity, while bionicle doesn't.

All the links with a "Bionicle" or "DW" url are probably fake. It doesn't take a computer genious to save the picture and post it to an account and add what ever theme they choose to the url. I highly doubt anyone at Lego involved in the announcement would make such a mistake or oversight.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO might actually be trolling us with the image names! The "2" pic has the following url:

F4_jpg20140917-32330-gov0rl.jpg

and the previous:

Bionicle-4-new_jpg20140915-4177-5fuc51.jpg

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^You're thinking "F4" means Fantastic Four?

My opinion writes it off as a naming coincidence (whoever's taking the pics has a camera that happens to save images with F4 in the beginning), although I obviously have no evidence of anything.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

There are already 13 Bionicle Sets listed for 2015 in Brickset. Didn't anyone of you check? Along with all names for 2015 Mixels Series 4 Rokit, Burnard and so on...

By in Netherlands,

^^everything after the first 'jpg' is just generated by Google.

Also, you have to look at the first picture yourself from their page, not only look at the link from others... If you check for yourself, you will see it says bionicle-4-new.jpg

Updated the news post with the new image. This one still features the 6 main colours though. Too bad there aren't really any other hints besides that...

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^You're thinking "F4" means Fantastic Four?

Precisely, or rather, like with the Bionicle image, that we're supposed to think it means Fantastic Four, when it's actually another red herring.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What if they put the Bionicle into the picture link just to trick us. That is definitely a possibility.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Where is the next clue ?, part of the countdown?
I don't use Facebook

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^would be nice but the mere fact that the teaser now says the more generic 'f4' would suggest that TLG are trying to make up for their mistake early on. It would be easy for the social media staff member to be supplied by an image called 'Bionicle-4' and just not change it's attached name.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Should we be looking for clues? Something huge? Is the Tardis huge? Something related to television as that looks like a test page? BBC? Something gradually appearing? Something blue? Bionicle four new? Does that mean anything? Why wasn't there a three in the countdown? Aren't we due a LEGO IDEAS announcement? Are we supposed to be able to guess the answer or is it all misdirection? Extra Small LEGO bricks? The Simpsons Theme? LEGO MOVIE exclusive set? If only we had a time machine to find out...

Gravatar
By in Spain,

after this second image I think they put the names of the url to trick us, bionicle, f4 etc. we wont have any clear clue until friday

By in Canada,

@Castleguy: It would have been pretty much impossible for LEGO to announce BIONICLE's return before we knew about it — the first leaks were in July. They generally don't announce new themes six months before they're released. That doesn't mean that when they do announce it, they should be expected to treat it as small potatoes.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Could it be that someone at Lego was just having a laugh with the Bionicle image name? I'm also not convinced there's too much meaning in the colours; to me that just looks like a mix of movie countdown frames and a tv test image.
Today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. It's a BIG surprise. My money is on a new pirate ship...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Maybe they will have some real news in their next press release?

Extension of LOTR into the next 6 years and a UCS Minas Tirith to be released in January 2015.....

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I almost hope their next big news is Duplo-related just to spite all the people here who are convinced that only their own favorite themes actually matter. All this boo-hooing about not every LEGO announcement being relevant to everybody is juvenile and pathetic.

I don't have any particular interest in LEGO Architecture or LEGO The Hobbit, but I don't make a fuss every time one of THOSE sets is announced. In fact, I do my best to appreciate even the sets and themes I have no personal interest in collecting. And I'm not so delusional as to assume that all themes that don't interest me personally are unimportant or "not real LEGO".

Close-mindedness like this is a big part of why in the early days of BIONICLE, fans of that theme flocked to welcoming communities like BZPower instead of established LEGO communities like Lugnet that treated them like dirt. Guess which of those two sites is still thriving to this day and which is an antiquated relic?
