Most recent set I got this piece in: 75577: Mako Submarine
A very cunning and crafty piece.
I'm not sure what Wangles is, but it sounds a bit sketchy.
I will always remember the older version from it's uses in Adventurers vehicles.
Most recent set i got this piece in is 75348
The basis for many a great craft.
I'm sort of torn about them adding the notches. On the one hand, the old version was cleaner-looking in certain applications. On the other hand, the new one has applications that are straight-out impossible with the old.

The Mighty Divine Cheese has spoken!"
Thank you for enlightening me. I shall reject my false idols of building bricks and devote myself wholly to the the veneration of Cheese!
For my first offering I humbly submit https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=54200pb103&idColor=3T=C&C=3
Back in the days of LDD I always missed the older non-notched version of this part being available...
Anyways, htere seem to be 3 distinct variations of this:
4859 from 1985-2002: Introduced in Town's Airport subtheme as part of a whole line of parts meant for 4-stud wide aircraft (just look up 6392). Noticably this version also introduced us to the very first purple System part in set 8277 for some unknown reason...
48183 from 2003-2009 (?): Intorduced with Drome Racers and Designer Sets during a whole wave of wedge part redesigns during that era, that would also give us sort of the 'half version' of this part. Almost all wedge plates/bricks/slopes and wings would be redesigned over the next couple years to feature notches, that would allow full underside connectibility at the price of a less smooth outer surface.
28842/90194 from 2009 onwards (?): Added a few additional struts to the underside structures to make underside connection a bit more secure.
I really wish pieces like this had actual names, would make them so much easier to find

I’m currently going through several boxes of Lego dismantling a load of sets that were built around 1990 and left untouched ever since, and I keep coming across this part. 6356, 6375, even 4030… I think I first encountered it in 6604 though.
The newer part just doesn’t look as good on 4 wide boats, planes etc.

Same here. For my Star Trek ship MOCs I used quite a few of the old, cleaner looking version. Unfortunately like you said some techniques simply were not possible with the notchless version.

Is there anywhere online that you post these mocs? Always love seeing Star Trek builds
@Atuin:
I think the third version was less about increasing clutch, and more about the fact that adding notches created major stress points that needed to be shored up so the wings wouldn’t be prone to snapping off.

Sorry, I have no online presence for posting pics.
Anyway my MOCs have long been disassembled, many before I ever took pictures at all. Remember it was decades ago, and back then cameras still used analog film, which was expensive, so we only took pictures of stuff we deemed really important. Hard to imagine nowadays, I know.
For some MOCs I saved them as LDD instructions, for others I didn't bother.
The only one I still have is my U.S.S. Reliant, though not the original I made during my childhood. I had built that one using yellow pieces as a kid (for lack of suitable grey ones). I made instructions for it in grey instead of yellow and then built it again recently just for fun, using my current parts collection.
The thing is though, since BlueBrixx now has the official Star Trek licence, and most of their sets are better than anything I could come up with, I have simply bought those sets rather than MOC those ships and accessories myself anymore.
@AustinPowers:
The first time I got a digital camera…my parents dropped in from across the state and my dad dropped and broke it before I had a chance to even use it. But when I got it replaced, I spent a day taking over 1000 shots…and ended up deleting them all because I wasn’t happy with how much glare you get with flash on LEGO parts. The next day I got some lights that I could set up around the subject so I could control the glare. I probably would have microwaved that camera if I’d gone through that much film without a single usable shot.
