Speaking of Lego trains ...

I never did buy this one, but the great thing about these older sets is there aren't that many specialised pieces. It was really easy to make an updated version of this carriage with modern pieces.

And then, of course, in the 90s, OCTAN came along and replaced Shell.

I wonder if that torso print is a sticker because back then lego didn't like printing brands on figures.

Curious if there are actually rail cars with that kind of set up. Two small tanks, and a dispenser in the middle. What would be the use of this kind of wagon? Especially if it is petrol, seems like the places it can access would have either no need for the petrol, or would want something with a bigger reserve.

Because Octan makes good stuff: music, dairy products, coffee, TV shows, surveillance systems, all history books, voting machines... wait a minute!

@Maxbricks14: If you look at the entry for the minifig, it seems to be printed.

Closest I found find is from he video game Factorio does use 3 tanks on it's Fluid Wagon rail cars.

Real life seems to have used 3 dome tanks instead that could be filled seperately , altho rare now, they looked more like this : 7816: Shell Tanker Wagon

@Miyakan:
Either the two tanks combine gas and oline, or they combine petro and leum.

This is really nicely designed.
Beauty in its simplicity. Love it.

By in Canada,

Is it me or are the tanks undersized for the wagon? Looks to me more like 3 balls on a skateboard.

P.S.: Still like the set a lot.

Better Petro and leum than Lino and leum.

By in United States,

Maybe it’s a chemical transport wagon, designed specifically for small volumes.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like how despite the squareishness of the tanks they still kind of work because of the corner slope and inverted corner slope parts.

Not bad for its time!

By in Turkey,

I've never got into trains but always admired them. A fine specimen for the theme.

By in Canada,

Yes, the past is in the past, but I miss the golden 12V days. Still have all of them, wish there were more, or a modern revive.

By in Jersey,

As other have said, nice looking little set. But in parts terms, little new compared to what was available in the parts palette five years earlier. Those flexible hoses, two levers, and that's it.

I do have the older 7816, and similarly to this, there's not an awful lot you can actually DO with it. These train wagons are more of a prop really. Having said that, always a delight to see grey era 12v train stuff.

By in Poland,

I only seen this set in the catalogs. And I remember how as a kid I thought this wagon looks so realistic. It was so lifelike! Oh, to see the world through a child's eyes one more time...

It's printed.

Ah, that warm fuzzy feeling that you only get from 1980s Lego Trains...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The wagon looks like a face with an open mouth

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The tie-in with Shell is not that strange considering plastic is a by-product of producing petrol.
I like those flexible hoses reminds me of Lego Space.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Oh, so that's that funny white wagon in Lego Loco.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So since LEGO isn't affiliated with Shell anymore to my knowledge, could this mean that in the LEGO canon, Octan bought Shell, and is now the one true monopoly that it is often joked as?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This thing is gorgeous

What actually finished the use of the Shell logo in mainline LEGO products in the early 90s? This was long before the Shell promotional products ended.

It was a print. All the Shell-logos I've seen on torsos and bricks, have been prints. The partnership between TLG and Shell was solid enough, until the public outcry became loud enough to disover that one or more of the companies involved in this partnership was notorious for being - let me check my notes here - evil.

I'm not talking "okay, maybe this artist is a bit sketchy but we like her franchise and the fandom/money she consistently brings in", but more "hey guys, let's methodically destroy the world for a tidy profit, yey!"."

For sure this little fellow had a sticker on his chest six years earlier:

6634 : Stock Car used stickers for the shell , logo and numbers. And sticker quality was actually really good, as they survived being in a parts bin and played with for a long time before building the car again in 2015.

Definately a print. I have several of those Shell-shirts at home.

@ICAbricks:
Star Wars and Winnie the Pooh were the first copyrighted IP to get tie-in themes. Shell, McDonald’s, and probably a few others, just had their trademarks licensed. It’s not quite the same thing.

@NotProfessorWhymzi: NotProfessorWhymzi ladies n' gentlemen, he'll be around all-week...not here though; ty the shellfish...:D

Set-wise: Saw it once at a specialty (and short-lived) toy store, which had a an incredible Lego selection...which I never picked any of, as I was in my Dark-Age at the time...

Rolling-Stock-wise: I've actually seen this style of car at least once in my life. But that was waaaaaaaay back before CN/CP took the Okanagan off 'the main line'. The only rail that still exists 'here' now runs Lumby to Armstrong, and no further. Rail to Kelowna, gone; rail to 'the mail line' (in Salmon Arm) gone...makes one wonder about the future of rail...:(

Should come with a protestor kragled onto it.

I was 13 Years old when my Parents get me this Beauty back in 1986. And I still have it. Wonderful Childhood Memories.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really miss the days of being able to buy individual locomotives and rail cars, vs today when it seems the only options are $150 playsets

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I remember wanting 7816 when I was little, but in the end it was phased out before I got round to buying it and I had to make do with this instead. One oddity in the set I got was that the wheels were black, but with red centre pins.

An advantage of this over 7816 is that the two end tanks can easily be removed and made part of a static installation.

I've recently built this in Octan colours (twice, once as the main build and once as the alternative flat wagon) along with Octan versions of the older 7816 and 136, and an Octan 7760 to pull them . They look quite smart, to my way of thinking.

@MCLegoboy: The "Shell" tag has sets as recent as last year, although you'd have to go back to 1999 to find any that didn't have shell as just a sponsor logo on a model that wasn't a licensed vehicle, and those 1999 sets weren't mainline anyway. just promotional releases with Shell.

Neat! Yeah I never thought about racing vehicles having sponsorship logos on them.
