One half of the Dollhouse maker.

I was surprised to find that i own 18 of this piece in just three sets which are 77015, 31108 and 75894 but 77015 has 11 in dark grey and 4 in black. It's because the diorama is angled so it needs these pieces to hold it together.

You're...a...Lego...employee?
So you have been spying on what we've been saying this whole time?! Quick, everyone cover up the illegal building techniques and delete comments you've written about criticising Lego!

A bit shy of 2 million of these and at least as many more from the previous iteration, doubtless. It is sometimes a fun challenge to identify which is which, but when processing multi-year bins it is also a pain, and sometimes both variants appear in the same set. I am sure this is the case here since the two types overlapped for 3 years until the old moulds went out of tolerance.

There are other methods. I know our local LUG ambassador gets the employee gift. As well as Recognised Fan Media outlets will sometimes get them.
But it does make sense, considering the large variety of sets Lemerbrix06 seems to own. Smells like an employee discount.

Any examples of retail sets where this is NOT paired with the bottom half?

Yes, nearly every single day of RPOTD lemerbrix owns the part in a set.

And he doesn't let anyone see his collection which means he must be hiding something...

By in Canada,

This part was a game changer when it first appeared in 1978 in Space and Castle sets. Back then, the lower part number was 3831 and the upper part was 3830. Lego had produced multiple hinges before (some I'd like to see coming back) but those allowed for opening up spaceship and castle for a whole new form of play - good times.

No, this is part of an elephant's ear.

This part just screams Castle, first and foremost 6080 and 6066 (of course).

There are sets where the halves are different colors.

According to Brickset, this part appears 128 times, and the previous version (3830) appears 286 times. That's 414 combined, but the bottom half (3831) appears 415 times. So, there should be one instance of the bottom with no top.

According to Bricklink, where they only inventory under 3830/3831, there are 413 tops and 415 bottoms, which would be two instances of bottom with no top.

By in Netherlands,

I own set 377 which is one set that uses only the bottom part of the hinge.

I felt like this piece in high school.

Through a good deal of introspection, familial scrutiny, and philosophical deduction, I have become a solid brick unto myself.

Only then, was I truly ready to build something with another.

By in Netherlands,

Dare I say without its counterpart this looks rather unhinged?

By in Netherlands,

A timeless part. Whether it's 1979 or 2019, you're going to want to hinge your builds. This part along with its counterpart and probably previous mould version has brought so many sets to life and given access to so many builds!

@Lemmerbricks wow, I didn't know about that one. It looks amazing! Lucky you for owning one!

This brick has the upper hand over other bricks.

By in Germany,

It's missing its significant other, like so many do.

Pretty sure I first encountered a version of this piece - along with many many other parts that were new to me as it was my first "big" set - in 6494 Mystic Mountain Time Lab; several of them were used, as they often are, to allow the building to hinge open.

Of this current version I only have them in one set where, for a change, they aren't used to allow the building to open up: rather, they're in 10297, where they're integral for creating the non-standard angles of the hotel's side wall and so the hinges don't move once they're built into place. Honestly one of my favourite features of that set, I love the way the building's shape isn't just a typical rectangle ^^

Crucial piece to allow 31131: Downtown Noodle Shop to close up.

6077 was my first."

Now that you mention it, 6077 was probably my first, as well, but I guess that I associate the hinge with larger place-based builds. Enclosed castle/open castle. Enclosed castle/open castle. Enclosed castle/open castle....

I first encountered this part in 6841, but it's use in 375-2 was far more memorable.

I don’t remember using it in that. But I do remember using it in 6075-2!

I first encountered this part in set 590, Engine Company No. 9. It allowed for a whole new play experience for me back then. That first one was red, but since then I have collected many more in other colors.
