Aaaaaaaaand..... the BrickLink site is dead. Not entirely surprised. They really need to get this under control

Gravatar

Not to anyone's surprise the site is already experiencing issues 3 mins out!

A lot of activity it seems. I can't even load the website. :(

Same problem. Different year.
BrickLink needs to get its act together!

Gravatar

Looks like I'm 404'ed! Not surprising. No snack shack for me.

Gravatar

Aaaarrrggghh. It is 3am here in Australia. This isn’t funny

Gravatar
By in United States,

Grrrrr,. Why every time there is a launch of something I want, the site crashes. Only happens when I am at work too!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Counted down to zero seconds, and instantly crashed

Gravatar
By in United States,

this really is Charlie Brown trying to kick the football… or Groundhog Day… your choice of repetitive predictable event analogy

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You can submit pre-orders here - Oh no you can't

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

first 'server error', then '405', now '404 not found'

Gravatar
By in United States,

Crash, crash, crash.... different day.... same Lego.

I wanted Mountain Fortress. Instead, I got 404 Not Found nginx/1.18.0 (Ubuntu)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Why do I even bother anymore. Major frustration with the server crash. Tried to talk myself out of it but that castle looks so good.

Success finally, got the Castle ordered. Now need to unplug the internet before I pickup that Train Shed.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I also watched the countdown for thirty minutes and then the website crashed. Brilliant………..

Gravatar
By in Luxembourg,

It would be so much fun pretending to have ordered a few sets... ;) But nobody would believe me. I think with every refresh we are just getting a new and different error message..

Gravatar

now '500 internal server error'

Gravatar

Did anyone already mention there is a server error?

Gravatar

504 gateway timeout

Shock horror (not) - the website's crashed!

Gravatar

surprise error site down ... what do you expect when you allow 2 per person only encourages the scalpers who have youtube vidoes on the hauls they buy.,

Gravatar

hahaha best of luck to you all!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

@Tuzi How do you know this?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe the Bricklink hack was actually the bots setting up billions of fake accounts to scalp? Perhaps AI has set it's sights on LEGO domination as a path to world domination?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Servers were down, Then, somehow I got in in time to pre-order the castle, servers are down again, gonna have to wait to get back in to get the others. I was hoping to.

Really?!

Gravatar

I was able to place an order for the Mountain Fortress, hang in there people & good luck !

Gravatar
By in United States,

How did they not build a queue system into their site to regulate traffic? I mean, this is pre-order 101 in 2024.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It took a few reload but I was just able to get in. Got the sets I wanted.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Mine started working fine after about 7 mins.

Ordered Castle, Western and Snack Shack!

Hope everyone is also able to get what they want

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

https://www.lego.com/en-ie/cart?product=9100030 to add the Snack Shack to your basket. Change the number to 9100031 for the General Store. Those are the only ones I wanted so try other numbers before and after those for the ones you are looking for.
Change the store location too, I'm using Ireland.

Wanted to ask a question, I see it already answered multiple times. The castle being 80% sold out just in couple minutes is disappointing. If I can’t access the site, again, until it’s sold out… I may not even try during the next round

Gravatar

Site down this is ridiculous

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

I was able to order castle ..like literally 1 minute before it crashed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks for the direct links - was able to order a Mountain Fortress!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

5am here in NZ and I have had my order of the Old Train Engine Shed confirmed by LEGO.com. I did get the 404 error, but it then reloaded with the link to LEGO.com.

Gravatar

Let’s hope the designers publish the instructions on rebrickable as that might be the only way to get access to these sets. does BDP stop them from doing that?

Managed to order the castle already. Now more endless waiting for the General Store and the Shed. The direct LEGO links posted above seem to work but I do not want to risk LEGO canceling my order since I did not follow "the process"

Gravatar
By in United States,

Only the Mountain Fortress loaded for me after 12 minutes of refreshing, seems to be the same thing every time LEGO launches limited run items. You'd think they would have realized the internet demand by now... Even the reverse search through LEGO.com doesn't have the sets listed anymore.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I laughed out loud when I refreshed when the counter hit 0 and immediately had a server error message. Thankfully the page became stable within 5 minutes and I was able to add 3 items to my cart at LEGO and complete my pre-order. When I went back to BL to check how quickly sales were going I notice that it had crashed again. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you manage to get what you want.

Gravatar

I can confirm very few of the castle have been purchased. I got onto the page but it's frozen.

Not sure if the program changed/will change, but I was able to get instructions for the castle in the forest set for free. I think it was from Bricklink. I followed a link from a blog after searching for instructions (can’t replicate because of their issues.) Hopefully they do the same for new sets

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks to everyone who posted the links! I'm getting the Engine Shed!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Used the links to preorder a single Engine Shed, Mountain Fortress and Snack Shack - just received the 'confirmation' email from Lego Shop

Gravatar

Do you think they do this on purpose to build the hype?

Gravatar

Man that was intense lol. got the 3 I wanted. Good luck all!

Gravatar
By in Finland,

After trying for 15 minutes the site started to work and I got both the Old Train Engine Shed and Parisian Street that I wanted. :D But living in Finland, Lego.com sells them to me only at a much higher price, 259,95 € for the Train Engine Shed and a whopping 346,95 € for Parisian Street! :(

I think its outrageous for LEGO to add +40 € and +60€ for the price of such sets in order to get a "free" shipping just because of the longer distance. The EU single market should not be used like this! Does anyone else on some other corner of the world have similar experiences?

Gravatar

Didn't realise you got points with this. Yeah.

Don't worry, there is an auto-email just reminding you that the item is on backorder and won't be shipped until July. I receive the same email for anything not currently in the warehouse.

Gravatar

I couldn't get a single page to load even after 25 minutes. Did order through the links, but a bit scared that the orders weren't actually checking stock and might get cancelled. This is just too much.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Yay! Managed to get 4 I wanted. Only managed via Edge and wifeys account though

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just got the main page to load, showing how many of each item have sold, thought it's worth posting the update:
About 1500 Mountain Fortress
About 1000 Snack Shack
About 700 General Store
About 1000 Train Shed
About 500 Parisian Street

These are based on how much of the progress bar are visible. There are 30000 of each item available and 3000 needed to go into production

Can we place the order via a different location as I cant get it from NZ?

Gravatar
By in United States,

By some miracle the page loaded for me after many reloads and I was able to order all the ones I wanted. My status on Lego.com was just changed to "Waiting For New Stock". Hopefully that means the orders are solid and will ship in July. Glad we get Insider Points for all this hassle at least. Too bad it was not also double points. I didn't notice until after i checked out that I ended up ordering 2 Shake Shacks by mistake I guess the link increased the QTY somehow and I didn't notice since I was so focused on completing checkout.

Direct links for the win! Thank you so much. Caught up in the hype, I added the Engine Shed and Mountain Fortress to my Snack Shack. I'd hate to miss those.

I did receive an out of stock notification for the Snack Shack, but that may be because it's a preorder.

That's brilliant, thank so much.

My credit card payment kept failing after approving in my banking app. I thought it might be due to the castle going out of stock, so I tried removing it from my basket. Payment still failed, PayPal too. My debit card then worked before I noticed, due to panicking, I'd accidently added the castle back twice! Sorry to the person that missed out because of this.

Call up Lego support and tell them what happened. When I purchased last year some Bricklink sets, a few of mine were bought under guest by accident and they transferred those VIP points to my account without a problem after talking to Lego support. You bought those sets, so you earned the points!

Do you think they do this on purpose to: 1) piss us off; 2) build the idea of scarcity; 3) save money on tech infrastructure; 4) induce us to make quick, unquestioning, large purchases; and 5) to build hype?

I managed to grab one of the castles. I got an email from Lego confirming the purchase and my card was charged $400, but then I received an email from Lego saying it was out of stock. Is that because it sold out, and I didn't get one after all, or is that just because it's a preorder?

They build the website for normal traffic and don't beef it up for these rare huge-volume events. Other websites that do things like this have queuing functions, so only the right amount of people get in at one time for what the website can handle. Lego should do that as well, especially since this is becoming a quarterly thing now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Snagged the Castle and Shed!, hopefully....

Didn't particularly want the Valentine's GWP. Maybe it'll end up being whatever GWP is at release in August, if applicable.

Now, to start planning how to MOD the Castle interior and the Shed exterior along the tracks, 'cause there's some sparseness.

Edit: Uh oh, now the Gen Store is eyeing me fierce.

I actually expected some of the items to sell out faster than they are. Really surprised that 50 minutes in, only about 57% of the fortress had sold. I guess last time I participated the limit was 20k, so it'd've been coming close to selling out if it was 20k this time too.

I know, right

Gravatar
By in United States,

Every project is funded! Mountain Fortress is the furthest along and is about halfway gone. Already can't wait for the next series!

I see this program as the cousin to LEGO Ideas. While the BDP may have fewer submissions and a smaller audience (for now), LEGO can control what pieces designers use and ensure stringent requirements from the start. When the sets are approved for Production, LEGO doesn't have to go through a huge re-design process or contact any potential IP partners.

If LEGO continues to add guidelines and expands the audience for this program (bring voting and ordering over to LEGO.com) it's a win-win. They basically outsource design work, make models that are guaranteed to sell, and pull in a tidy profit along the way.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As well as the "backdoor" links already posted, it works perfectly well at 4.10pm if you go to bricklink, the choose the programs>current programs tab. It seem their server error was just going from one page on BL to another, not the link to lego.com.

You say 50 minutes in, but did it work for the fist 30?"

I thought the previous limits were 10K of each set?"

It was 5k in the first couple rounds. They messed things up (shocker) so had to expand it to 10k.

It took a LONG time for some of us to get our sets.

In fact, my order for Series 1 was lost in the mail. Got a refund, but no sets. They only make enough to fulfill the pre-order. If there's any problem, you're SOL.

Yeah, I got lucky with that. I was on a severely delayed flight when it first went live and they sold out by the time I landed. I kind of wanted the Castle which had already sold 10K by accident, so it wasn't put up for the second sale day, but I REALLY wanted the fishing boat, which I was able to get on the second day.

After that round, I think they just did 10K for the future rounds if I'm remembering correctly.

The instructions for past Bricklink Designer Program sets are just plain available. See https://www.bricklink.com/r3/designer-program/past/bdp-2021.page And for most of the ones listed there that didn't fund, the instructions are indeed on Rebrickable.

But we have lower VAT than most of Europe and there should not really be any major import taxes, so the price should be lower. Yet, again, LEGO adds a 20% premium for Swiss customers. Because they know that people on average have more income here

It's definitely slowing down. I grabbed one to oppose Lion Knight's Castle, and Castle in the Forest will kinda be there off to the side. The upcoming Forestmen set will be a nice pickup for anyone who missed Castle in the Forest, and while it looks awesome, I doubt I can justify it.

Spot on. BLDP Round 1 had a Max of 5000 sets. LEGO then claims they oversold the Castle in the Forest to 10,000. In order to make it fair to everyone (including the designers), LEGO reopened Round 1 so the other sets could go up to 10,000 too. For the following Rounds 2 and 3, the Max stayed at 10,000. Beginning with this "SERIES" 1, the Max is a clearly unattainable 30,000. lol :o)

The issue is on lego's website, it's not got the right location for you. At the bottom of the page on lego.com, in the purple page footer, just under the LEGO logo on the left, there's a location selection thing. It'll probably say "North America" or something like that. Select UK from there.

Go to the bottom of the page and change your location to the UK and then try again. LEGO website sometimes randomly switches your location (probably due to bad location management and cookies).

Best I could come up with is to right click the bar -> inspect -> select the tag with the class "bdp-progress-bar__bar" (not one of the two "-milestone" ones). Expand this so you see the child with the class "bdp-progress__progress". selec this child div. In another pane there should be a tab called "styles". If you select this tab it'll show a bunch of CSS code, one of which (likely the first) is element.style{...}. In there there's a parameter called margin-left, which is currently at 99.17%. This gives you the percentage.

I'm sure there's a less convoluted way to find this information but that's what I've used.

Exactly! So I believe many who bought by direct link will receive cancellations as soon as Lego verifies how the orders were placed. Last time they had to increase the production limit and doubled the numbers. I don't think they will do this again if it happens now.

By in Sweden,

3 hours (ish) to sell 30k at max 2 per person, vs 38 minutes to sell 5k at max 5 per person with Castle in the Forest. I know the rates really can't be compared without knowing how many went as multiples, but assuming everyone bought the max (I just got one of each, but still), the Mountain Fortress sold around 3x faster.

Castle demand is crazy, especially since Lion Knight's Castle and the Creator 3-in-1 exist.

I just tried adding the Fortress with the link and it did not work. Maybe there is a small delay in the communication between the sites, but I am not too worried about sets ordered via the direct link being cancelled. I am sure that LEGO actually has the stock numbers on its site and this is somehow synced with what is shown on the BL site.

I doubt it as the url is identical whether you visit via Bricklink or not. Also how does the Bricklink site identify if you order 1 or 2 copies in LEGO.com. Presumably this information can only come from the LEGO.com purchases.

Nope. Let's not start a panic, please.

The way this worked is the same way it worked last time in Rounds 1, 2, and 3. Bricklink is recommended as the starting point but all it does is drive you to LEGO.com. Last time, we were able to just search for the sets on LEGO and then order them that way and it worked out fine. This time, I was unable to leverage the search feature. Whether you click the button on Bricklink to take you to LEGO or you just go directly to a link from above, it works the same.

Bricklink does not track who clicks the button. If so, then they'd have to build a bazillion strongholds as many took it to cart but never bought. The Bricklink progress bar is driven by the LEGO website, not the other way around.

Funnily enough, I tried to figuring that out this week when I was digging into what Ideas designers earn from sales (1% is what I found, less than BLDP Series designers at 5%). I think the consensus best seller is/was the Saturn V. I have to imagine that most "real" Ideas sets move tens of millions units.

Not quite. 23% of the sales price paid by Irish customers goes directly to the Irish Government in VAT. Its the same elsewhere in the EU (where rates can be higher or lower) and no doubt beyond the EU where similar rules apply."

Wouldn't revenue be tracked against gross sales, not net sales?

I suspect the limit of two is for households, if partners or kids each want one, it's easy to do. Yes, multiple people might have Lego accounts, and I don't think they crosscheck shipping addresses, but that's why I'd hazard they allow two.

Unlikely if by gross sales you mean inclusive of VAT. VAT is not accounted for as turnover/ sales. Think of it as LEGO acting as a tax collector for Goverments.

My figures are based on 30,000 units sold at the U.S. sales price of $379.99, which would not include any tax. Does LEGO modify the sales price (outside/away from currency conversion) for Ireland and the EU in order to account for VAT?

European prices must be shown with vat included. So, every RRP price for Europe includes the vat by default.

What was the EU price for this set and was it higher than strictly current conversion rates? LEGO pricing around the world gets confusing and makes my head hurt. :o)

They are nice sets, and I would have bought at least some of them, but having bought in previous series, my experience with these is that without quality printed instructions they are not nearly as much of a joy to have as a regular LEGO set of similar cost and quality.

I had similar thoughts however the digital LEGO builder app and instructions surprised me in a positive way; ability to zoom, look from different angles etc.

Laughing at all of the people who wouldn't have otherwise thrown down $380 on the castle set do it because of artificial scarcity and fear of missing out. Will be laughing even harder when these sets are still lingering on ebay in a year with prices significantly under retail.

Going by previous experience with those Bricklink sets that came before I'd say the chances for that scenario happening are slim to none.

For example I ordered 910023 Venetian Houses last time at retail of 245 Euro.
The cheapest sold in recent months on ebay was around 300 Euro, and the most expensive almost 600 Euro! If I sold mine today (which is still MISB since I haven't gotten around to building it yet) I could net a handsome profit.

To be honest, i do not understand why all people are so hyped on these. Be creative, build your own mocs! I like the surf shak but not for that price and i am pretty convinced i can build something similar myself. So why bother?
The only purpose for me would be reselling. But then again, what round is this? I think these sets wont even do as well as the previous bricklink sets on the aftermarked. Maybe that western set.. Maybe.

As time goes on and bricklink sets getting more and more each year those extended pricings on the aftermarked will not keep holding i reckon. As for this round i dont understand the hype as i mentioned before. The prices are insane and for example that castle is just a boring grey block to me. The western set is pretty small, i wonder where all the pieces go same for the other sets exept the surf shack. The parisian street cant hold up with any of the modulars with that open back, which i like by the way. Since i have two daughters, p!ayability is key. Still, not a set for me.

The only one that appealed to me was the 'Old Train Engine Shed' but I didn't really have a location it would have suited (although it had better sell out soon otherwise it might find its way into my basket!)

Sorry for the question, but where can you see the number of pieces remaining in stock? Yesterday many were saying that 1.000 pieces of the castle remained, then 450, then less than 100... How did they manage to have this data updated in real time? Is there a link where I can see the remaining stocks? Using the filler bar you can only make rough estimates. Many thanks in advance.

@LiamLime mentioned this above, but you can right click on the progress bar and select 'inspect'. From there, you can find the precise percentage progress of the bar and calculate the number of sets remaining. @LiamLime gave the full method, which you can find earlier in the comments. There may be other ways to find out too.

You can find out the remaining stock by looking at the page source. Each progress bar is a colour gradient and the remaining stock is blocked by a 'progress bar blocker', which is expressed in %.

Looking at the Old Train Engine Shed: it has a 'margin-left' property of 92.1111%, which means there's 7.8889% stock left (out of 30000). That would give you roughly 2366 sets left.
Same for Parisian Street. 47.6095% of the progress is blocked, so you've got 52.3905% of the stock left, which leaves you with 15717 sets still in stock.

Just open the page source (or Web Dev Tools in Firefox/Chrome) and look for the 'class="bdp-progress-bar__bar-blocker"' elements. They'll all have a 'margin-left' property expressed in %. (In case of the Mountain Fortress and Snack Shack these are 100%, which means sold out.)

Wanted the Mountain castle but under the weather and with 02:30 timing for me and work in the morning decided if it was available when I woke up great but if not I'd live. Sold out quick so bad for me but good for my bank account. I suppose LEGO just needs to sell more castle as demand is evidently there.

I have only built the bowling alley, Studgate, and the Sheriff’s Safe so far but I’ve really enjoyed each of them. For those of us without the time or talent to do some of this ourselves, it’s been very welcome. I’m already making room in my city for the train shed but I’m unfortunately going to have to reverse it. The question is if I’m talented enough to be able to do that, lol. :o)

Those who are still thinking of getting the Train Shed should not wait too long. Have been following up remaining stock a few times during the day, and at the going rate I would expect this to sell out by 8-9 PM GMT today, possibly quicker.

I'd say it's fairly unlikely, tho precedented as they increased it from 5k to 10k that one time, granted it was ostensibly to account for a mistake on their side, and also before the lego acquisition.

I think the sets will certainly be available on the secondary marketplace and likely not at huge markups compared to current prices (once everyone has received their sets, the first few days when the sets start arriving will see silly prices as usual.) I say this simply because there are 3x as many sets being made as in previous rounds and the prices for those previous sets stabilised at no more than 2x retail. For the fortress there are also a number of similar sets in upcoming rounds, some of which will have gone through preorders by the time these sets ship and become available on the secondary marketplace.

So I think you'll have a chance to get the set from the secondary marketplace at a not totally unreasonable price a few weeks after they start shipping. Best of luck!

No back = no greenbacks.

We've all been spoiled/conditioned by modulars and their related counterparts.

Many of the target group of BLDP consumers are the AFOLs and outside the normal group of Lego consumers. AFOLs are rapidly running out of time, space, and perhaps, money. Thus, they can only justify a large purchase of something that fits into a scheme. Most of those schemes are off shelves, and require the set to look finished from all sides.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Idk why, but these don't feel like Lego sets anymore, they look like a ton of effort was put into making them by the original designers and then by Lego (I think, idk how this series works) to make them into production sets, and I applaud all of them, everyone here seems happy about it. But they are just so complex now that I just don't see them as Lego and instead like a dollhouse or something.

I dunno, if I were to have the space for a full Lego city, it would all be much more classic style, houses that take up half a baseplate and 4 wide cars. It's a bit like in Minecraft now where "starter" houses are massive off grid crazy buildings with extreme detail and a palate of 18 blocks.

"Waiting for new stock" means your order has been accepted. It won't change again until it says "in the warehouse" when they start shipping the orders.

I think it fits in a niche that hurts it some. It is similar to a modular, but it is open backed. There have been a lot of modulars and similar buildings released over the years so fans of those aren't wanting for options. It is also the second most expensive set in this wave.
